jacklanting it may be because of cultural difference & views however I know in my counrty and many other that a lot of women cannot really speak out and act out as they wish, parents and members of the society usually teaches them to only do certain things or act a certain way i.e. girls shouldn't go to a guy's house, they should dress appropriately, be thin and must always be pretty and pleaseing to the eyes. Which is why, as I believe, whenever there is a movie/series that has a strong female figure or is different than the usual woman, many celebrates it or is amaze by it because there isn't many of that type of women. Also, I am not saying that men do not suffer the same circumstances because I'm sure there are many as well. :)
