Steeleye Span's 'Gaudete', taken from the 'World Tour' 35th Anniversary DVD. Available to buy from the Park Shop here: parkrecords.com...
You can stream and download the Best of Steeleye Span: Catch Up on platforms such as Spotify and Apple here: orcd.co/catchup
In an age when bands seem to come and go in the blink of an eye, an occasion such as a thirty fifth anniversary is one that just has to be marked. Such it was for Steeleye Span, who decided to celebrate the best way they know how - by taking their music of the people to the people across the country. With a line-up featuring names from every period of the band’s illustrious history, the music captured here also reflects every aspect of their stunning career - from their earliest adventures into electric folk through to their commercial heyday and latter work. This is not only the first time that all these individual personalities have been in the same band at the same time, it is also the first time that the magic of Steeleye Span in concert has been caught especially for DVD. Let the celebrations begin….

Back in early 1970’s I was listening to the likes of Black Sabbath, Mountain, Hendrix, Cream, et al., when I found myself sitting in a crowd anxiously awaiting the headliner Jethro Tull. Suddenly the lights went down and music unlike anything I had ever heard filled the air and my love of traditional English, Scottish, Irish, and French folk music was born. I became mesmerized, almost transfixed by the sound as it washed over me. The lead singer danced about the stage in a long, beautiful, flowing dress that seemed almost hypnotic. Thank you Steeleye Span for educating my ear and sending me along to ensembles such as The Baltimore Consort, Quink, and many others.

Now please don't get angry with me... I like Steeleye Span (and Maddy Prior as well), but personally I find her voice a little piercing. On balance, though, she and the entire ensemble are still amazingly good, and she seems very popular and respected with her fellow performers.

I remember when my dad would play this in the car when we would go on trips. I remember as a kid we were going to watch Millwall somewhere, and he took us on the scenic route through some beautiful hills. We stopped at a pub and had a meal and went on our way. I was really young and can't remember where it was, but this song and that scenery mean this memory has been etched into my mind ever since.

Sigh....people still harping on Steeleye Span's "bad" Latin pronunciation in this song? My thanks to all of you who correctly understand that at one time, ALL Christians in Europe (not just educated monks, nuns, and clergy) sang or prayed in Latin, with pronunciation that was undoubtedly less than "perfect". Heck, even average parish priests were accused of botching it at times, right up into the 1960's, when the vernacular was introduced into the Catholic Mass. I love Steeleye Span's rendition of Gaudete. It's joyful, connects me to my ancestors, and their English inflections change the meaning and spirit of the words, not one jot or tittle!

Only a British band could make this obscure European medieval plainsong monks chant an international hit.Britain yet again leading the world.
@sb6678
@sb6678 6 ай бұрын
It is not a plainsong melody and not one that would be sung by monks. Monks would only sing items from a Gradual or Antiphonal as they have done so since the earliest of times. Whilst being sacred in nature (which can be understood from the Latin) this is more of a secular carol that would be sung by the ordinary everyday people of the time and perhaps at an equivalent of a Carol, concert, but certainly not within an Office chanted by monks in an abbey. It is far too ‘modern’ for them to sing such a piece. This is far from obscure, it was an extremely well known piece sung throughout Europe in the 14th century and since. At the time it was passed down orally from one generation to the next. In its written form it made its earliest appearance in a Finnish manuscript from 1592 titled Piæ Cantiones. It that edition it contains only a melody and parts for the chorus, Gaudete; no melody is indicated for the verse which would suggest that whoever performed this was free to interpret the melody to their own. There is a melody for the verses written in a later Bohemian manuscript which is more appropriate to the nature of the Carol. The melody used by this group is far too frivolous and modern. Despite the text of the Carol being joyful (rejoice, joy, be glad etc) a melody such as this would not have been used in C14th due to the structure of music at the time.
@calmeilles
@calmeilles 4 ай бұрын
@@sb6678 You complain about it being "frivolous and modern" but the dominant part of the refrain is the discantus line of the 1420 Jistebnice hymnal, recorded in the 1582 Piae Cantiones of Jacobus Finno, in the Finnish National library..

I adore this. Of all the versions, this remains the most... authentic version. I hope that makes sense. It feels like true Medieval English villagers would sing this way in the days before this hymn was written down finally in the 16th century. No instruments, no twenty bellowing tenors. Just them and their voices.

Magnificent….I had forgotten about this song and this band for well over 40 years, then I heard it and was immediately transported back to my childhood. It’s not just good because of the nostalgia, but rather I’ve always loved English Gregorian chant. Beautiful!

Love the pronunciation. This is how I imagine medieval English peasants singing this hymn-simple, rustic, heartfelt, unaffected. Beautiful. Far and away the best version of this song.
@abcbcde9985

Simple? I think the harmonies go beyond that - just my opinion. One, I suspect, also can only speculate as to just how 'English peasants' would have sounded singing such a song. But, one's imagination is such a powerful thing and from that perspective I am totally with you.

I first heard this carol at the Christmas Carol concert when I was in the lower 6th form. It was sung by 3 girls, and I really wanted to be up there singing it! My A level sociology teacher was there and referred to it as the Steeleye Span song - I hadn't heard of them then and didn't hear their version until several years later. I finally got my chance to sing it with a women's singing group, and I've also sung it at my local folk club since then, both the lead and the harmony.

This got to 14 in the Christmas 1973 British pop charts. My late Dad, a Latin teacher, was thrilled - but he was concerned about some pronunciations at the time, bless him. I understand that no other song sung totally in Latin has ever got this high up the charts before or since. Over to you experts! I have the single and the album somewhere in the attic. Yes, it is one of the best xmas songs of all time, at the age of 56 and all these years later it still sends shivers down my spine when I hear it.

Abc Bcde I studied Latin in high school for two years and although we didn’t speak it much, we did learn to pronounce it according to certain rules. My father had learned Latin in church and Catholic school as a child and pronounced many words with very different sounds from the pronunciation I was learning. Both are correct in their own spheres I assume.
