Earlier this year I installed cattle panel arches to improve my garden design. Here’s an update on what is growing on them and the many ways they have improved the functionality on my perennial and annual veg crops.
Here’s the original video: Easy Strong Garden Trellis Anyone Can Build! For Goji Berries to Pumpkins • Easy Strong Garden Tre...

My husband and I put in lots of cattle panel arches this year. We put grapes and roses up some and some have tomatoes and pole beans with cucumbers on the edges.

Thanks Angela. I love your videos. I use cattle panel arches for my hardy kiwi in front of window. This stacks functions in helping to cool the house while providing a yield. In the annual garden, I use panels for cucumbers and pole beans. To stack functions, I use the shaded area underneath for heat sensitive crops like lettuce.

Thanks for mentioning the use of cattle panel arches for hardy kiwi. I was about to ask whether that would work.

I'd love to see a video about recommended resources for a beginner. Like what books, websites, etc. do you recommend to get started?

Thanks for another great video! You mentioned in one of your garden tour videos that you have 2 dogs. As someone with 2 dogs of my own just getting started with my food forest, I’d love to hear tips about their place in your permaculture system. I’ve been getting frustrated with them trampling and digging and busting through my fences and peeing on things, and would love ideas on how to get plants established in spite of them :)

I would love to hear more about this as well. After years of frustration with this, we ended up fencing off the back 2/3 of our back yard where the bulk of our annual garden and many of our fruit trees are located to keep the dogs out, and have left about 1/3 of the yard as a small lawn for the dogs. But I'd love to be able to garden that area if we could figure out how to limit dog destruction.

I have found that the plastic tie-wraps holding the panel to the t-posts will eventually break from UV damage. Old pieces of copper house wiring (Romex) can be used and will last a lifetime. I find the copper looks better too! ; )>

Yeah, we got the UV-resistant ties, but I expect we will have to replace them with wire eventually.

You may want something for those pumpkins or any melons on a trellis to prevent them from falling when they get big and heavy and the vine snaps upon ripening. I hear pantyhoes work well.

I’ve grown them up other fences and over my poultry houses for years and never had a squash break. Sometimes for very large ones, I make them a little sling out of an old t shirt.

your so lucky to have a nice garden. This year I have had cucumber beetles, squash bugs, harlequin bugs, vine borors, earwigs voles, rabbits, and mosaic virus destroy 90% of what I planted. Literally the worst year ever. I planted over 40 squash and melons and will maybe have 5 to harvest. Not sure if its because of the cicadas filling the bellies of predators this but it has just been depressing. I have about 10 cattle panel trellises and they are empty now.

ooof. blessed be. that's hard to hear. I know you will eventually have a fully self sustaining garden, there are just kinks getting worked out. Do you have guilds with insect confusers (Alliums) and supportive animals (frogs, mantis, ladybugs)?

I am so sorry to hear that and I can understand you, wild boars raided and destroyed our garden this year and we lost most of our tomato plants and other annual veggies. Better years will come for both of us!

@@yourgardendoc thankfully the lady bugs are plentiful and take care of all the aphids, and the toads are out eating any slugs. We do have mantis but I dont often see them in action but they are here. I think its just been an overwhelming amount of cucumber beetles and squash bugs

I live at the top of a hill, in a city. I’d love to turn my front yard into a food forest. We have deer, though. I’m really interested in seeing a video about creating a food forest from scratch and how not to have the deer eat all of it! Thank you ;)

"Deer also don’t tend to like plants with thick, hairy, or prickly leaves or stems. Deer can be a little lazy about digging up root vegetables, but this doesn’t mean they won’t eat their aerial foliage. For example, they are very fond of carrot tops but rarely eat the carrots. Below are lists of edible plants that deer don’t eat (usually) and edible plants that deer sometimes eat, though they are not preferred. Edible Plants Deer Don’t Eat: Onions Chives Leeks Garlic Asparagus Carrots Eggplant Lemon Balm Sage Dill Fennel Oregano Marjoram Rosemary Thyme Mint Lavender Artichoke Rhubarb Fig Parsley Tarragon Edible Plants Deer Don’t Like But May Eat: Tomato Pepper Potatoes Olive Currants Squash Cucumber Brussels Sprouts Bok Choy Chard Kale Melons Okra Radish Cilantro Basil Serviceberry Horseradish Borage Anise " www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/pests/deer/deer-resistant-edibles.htm

Another great video, thanks so much for wonderful content 😀 Buttercup squash is my favorite, too. I have a massive volunteer vine that collapsed my clothesline lol. Last year, I grew 80 lbs. What's your favorite recipe for it? Much love from So Cal

I am curious about trying this design for permanent vertical supports for a variety of annuals, but my partner is concerned that crop rotation is essentially (i.e. don't grow squash/cucurbits in the same spot two years in a row.) Wondering if you will grow the same crops up these arches each year or if you have a rotational system you can share?

Oregon Sweet Meat stems are strong enough to support the weight of their fruit on a trellis? Just wondering how heavy of fruits you can grow on cattle panels when it comes to melons and squash.

They are! I have never had one break when they Grew up my fence. But, you can make a little bra for them out of a t shirt if you’re concerned about them. :)
