Your intuition is on point Brit. When you put a country into debt building roads, you own it pretty much. 15 minute cities is part of the build back better project, but it goes against nature. I wonder what is under the island (resources). Stunning video guys. Absolutely breathtaking. I’m sure Nixon was grinning from ear to ear, watching you all enjoy his home town. Safe sailing. 💗

Take care, God Bless and Merry Christmas 🎄
@lowellmccormick699124 күн бұрын
When I was a kid in the early 1960's I saw a preview of a movie that showed unusual stuff around the world. Vine jumping was one of the things shown in the preview. I think the name of the movie was "Mondo Cane". I remember political issues popping up in Palau (I think it was Palau) over the issue of the installation of a large generator to supply electricity for the island. The stuff I read at the time was pretty bad. As Bri said, you don't get something from someone without the expectation of receiving something in return. The price of "progress" in Vanuatu might be a Chinese navy base.

Yeah, it's happened a few times, where they build roads and the countries can't afford to pay the overwhelming debt, so either land or fishing grounds are requested as payment. In the end, these places end up worse off than before the Chinese "helped" them, as resources are taken until there's nothing left. When I heard about the road here, it brought a tear to my eye as nothing good will come out of this.

To understand China’s motivation here, you must understand that economically speaking, China is an exporting country. Because they have a very large population and a state-driven economic model, they have excess capacity in everything, from steel to Dollar Store widgets to labour. To keep their system viable, the Chinese must export that excess capacity, in this case, it is labour to Vanuatu. In return for the labour and Chinese capital needed to build the roads, the Chinese will extract primary resources such a timber, minerals and fish and will be able add Vanuatu to its list of supporters in the UN whenever there is an important vote.

We visited Pentecost island and saw the land diving towers in 1998. The road across the island to the eastern side had just opened, taking an hour or so to drive across, when previously it had taken 2 days to walk across the steep jungle covered mountains. At the time they had one new Toyota ute to take tourists across to visit the "custom" village, where the people lived as they always had. I imagine it has totally changed now. The only tourists were cruisers from private yachts, and the odd white gin palace. We also visited Asanvari Bay, which indeed is beautiful, and has a beautiful waterfall as well not far from the anchorage. I remember Nixon living there at the time, and being one of the villagers who interacted with the yachties and organised dinners and excursions etc. On the coastal road for Pentecost - not many people will have cars, but maybe some motorbikes? It will be good for access for health care, but not really much use. In the Banks Islands, further north, we transported some people around the island to a small town, as their only other option was to walk for days. Other than the road, it is good to see not much has changed.
