Yes, on the island of Maui Hawaii we get to witness the birth of the humpback whales in February and March. I've been fortunate to get to see them from my kayak, where one actually swam right along us while looking back at us and then swam right underneath the kayak to the other side of us. He knew we were there and thankful he didn't hit the kayak as he continued to swim on. That was certainly an experience of a life time to remember and I'm very glad to have shared this experience with all of you. ALOHA!

Hi Guys, a few tips, that depth sounder is expected to be removed regularly as sea life attaches, there is a flap that reduces the inflow of water so no need to panic, attached the blanking plug close by while you withdraw sensor to clean it. Yeah you guys are in warm water and probably scraping that hull frequently and cleaning the season from out side. Not so here in PNW. Also, install 2 mast steps at about 300mm above your max height with halyard and use a well made loop to hold, ease yourself onto step, so that you can see top of mast components during maintenance. I only use a harness as activities such as halyard rethread at sea are not safe using a bosuns chair.

Come on - you have to give anyone credit as a boat owner and especially Colin as a frickin experienced megayaught engineer to understand that some water is going to come in. 😅 This was for drama and also a little extra stress as the actual boat owner.

Having been a boats engineer on commercial fishings boats for 27 years in my past one of the cheapest remedies to help keep rust at bay on steel fittings under deck spaces was Denso Tape (Grease coating Fibre Tape). I'm sure you probably know about it but i found it a massive help and just thought it might be good to mention it. We used a Canadian brand as it was better quality and worked well. Keep up the crac boys your keeping us all on the water even if we don't have a boat.

Get yourself an ammo case for the spare electronics, the metal of the case should act as a faraday cage to protect against the EMF you will experience in a future strike, it'll also keep the electronics nice and dry :)

If there was an emp wouldn't that effect the very satellites the electronics rely on ?
@oomwat6101
@oomwat6101 Жыл бұрын
@@easternsuneasternsun171 While related the two are not the same thing. EMP - ElctroMagnetic Pulse - a wave of EMF that causes widespread destruction. EMF - ElectroMagnetic Field - the field generated by a current flowing through a conductor - used in motors and generators, but is also a result of electricity being carried down the path of a lightning strike. When you place items inside a steel box, then the field will tend to induce the majority of its current into the box itself rather than the contents. Ideally you'd want the box made of soft iron, but steel should suffice.

They just aren’t innovating anymore and seem to have been unable to keep up to compete - so their products are actually going backward. For that blind work above your head, get an adjustable mirror on a long stalk, such as a motorcycle rear view mirror. Bodge up a mount that will grip the mast. Once in place, adjust and voila, you can see what you are doing. The idea also works for blind holes below deck where you cannot get both your head and hands into. A life and frustration saver...

Another approach to replacing the depth sounder: get a small plastic bowl. Put caulking compound around its rim and then stick it on the outside of the hull over the spot where the depth sounder is located. The water pressure will hold the bowl in place while you pull the depth sounder. Shouldn't get more water in than the volume of the bowl.

If you're worried about water ingress and you have SCUBA onboard have a diver with an empty tin can cap the hole from the outside. We even used this trick to install through hulls without hauling. Two people; Pre coat the outside section of the through hull with 5200 before the diver gets in the water; diver positions themselves close to where the through hull is to be installed; inside person drills 3mm hole from the inside pushing the drill past the flutes to the shank; diver covers the drill with an empty can; inside person now drills the full-size hole; diver takes off the can and pushes in the outer section of the through hull into the hole sealing the opening with their palm; inside person secures the fitting and installs the valve. Sounds scary but does work with minimal water ingress.

Do lightning rods on the mast, both bows, and sterns. 2 gage wire and tie railings together. Down to blowout panels just above the waterline. Surge protectors on everything. Then you can take a direct hit with no issues. Right now it's hitting your lighting or systems on the mast and smashing your whole electrical system. Lookup Thompson's Method for details and specifics in building a system. Thompson's Method is the USCG standard for lightning protection. All you need is 5 lightning rods, wire, and connectors.

Thanks you reminded me of that feeling Fire up the engine drop the mooring and heading out. Feeling the vibrations though your feet and the surge of progress looking onward to the next navigation point. Your mind reviewing possibility of the destination and opportunity opening ahead. . Priceless. At lest two fully independent systems . For depth sounder, GPS, charting, heading, radios etc. as per NZ cat one. Some things are nice to have not necessary. wind speed and direction are under that heading Your senses are more reliable than any machine.

Bonding does work...naturally your mast and riggin could ground out through the keel and zincs... but bonding to the motor mounts may pass future harmful hits through the shaft / prop...considering a house I grounded out from hits to hydro stacks, etc, by no6/9 cu wire what your mate did by putting the wire in water would work.

Autopilot is not a navigation aid. It’s an equipment make it more easy so you can have less attention to navigation. So it’s an easy fix increasing risk of sailing. Anyway there shall always be a lookout. A lookout stearing the boat is a sharper lookout than one using an auto pilot.

I love Tefgel as an anti-corrosive compound but not ideal for mast fittings. I was doing a delivery on a Swan 86 some years ago. It had just had a big refit, mast paint etc. Mainsail track machine screws were fitted with Tefgel and by mid-Atlantic they had worked their way out to the point we could not reef the sail. 2 trips up the mast to screw back in and let the Harken cars past but by then had ripped the mainsail. When we got to the Azores we had the local sailmaker bring the sewing machine to the boat as this was easier than taking sail to loft. For mast fittings always use Duralac.
