I got 1 about 5 years ago and immediately split it into 2 plants in exact same pots. 1 I have downstairs near a east facing window, and the other is in a upstairs south facing bathroom, and it gets a good amount of direct sunlight. The plant in the bathroom has easily doubled the growth of the 1 downstairs, I’m guessing because of the direct sunlight combined with the steam from showering, it’s much thicker, taller and greener than its downstairs counterpart.

@timothykrause2327, Thanks for sharing. Your plants sound like they're really thriving. While parlor palms can grow in lower humidity, they do love the steam, which makes sense that the one in the bathroom would be doubled in size. It's great that you grew the two in different microclimates to see how they would do.

Thanks! I have a tiny but very healthy parlor palm that has all of its growth concentrated in the center. I’d love it to spread a little. Should I repot? I also have decorative moss around the top of the pot.
@HealthyHouseplants
@HealthyHouseplants 2 жыл бұрын
Johanna Bennetts, You're very welcome. Generally, the parlor palms grow from the inside out, eventually filling out as they continue to spread. It could need repotting. You want to go by the 2/3 plant to 1/3 pot ratio. If the plant is more than 2/3 of the entire plant/pot combo, it's likely time to repot. However, if the plant is in too big of a pot, then you'd want to pot down to a smaller pot. Here is a video that will show what I'm talking about: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIncaYpup99ge8U

@HealthyHouseplants Жыл бұрын
Linda Veres, Palms tend to be fairly fast growers and they will send out roots through drainage holes as they grow. You will want to repot them in a couple of months in early spring. In the meantime, just make sure to keep them consistently moist but not soggy. It's best not to repot until spring. Here is my repotting playlist which walks you through repotting plants: kzbin.info/aero/PLCkPgo-m1DrH40bsYtxQvvoK7sYP6uyf7

@HealthyHouseplants
@HealthyHouseplants Жыл бұрын
Adorable Parakeets, the plant could need a repotting and fresh soil. Does it dry out frequently? It could also be a salt buildup in the soil. If it is winter for you, though, you would want to wait until early spring to repot. Salt buildup can be helped with leaching. Here is a video on that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gH6Th5iko55mhrc

@HealthyHouseplants
@HealthyHouseplants 2 ай бұрын
@pakistanpakistani7869, springtime is the best time to divide parlour palms, as that is when they are putting on the most growth and releasing the most growth hormones. All of that helps ensure the plant does well after the dividing.

Thank you for sharing Julie!! My Hubby just got me a small Parlor palm to replace my Parlor palm which I named "Island Princess!!" I'm sad about it because I've had her since 2005!! It was one of my very first plants along with a Spider plant which I lost back in 2016 due to scale and the brutal Winter!! Island Princess was 2 inches when I got her and it grew to 2 feet and had gotten several of those weird flowers lol!! It's weird that I never used fertilizer and it grew to 2 feet but, with my new one I will!! Due to neglect, my original palm has lost all of it's leaves and unfortunately, dying a very slow death!! I haven't been able to get rid of her since her stalk is still green!!💚💖😢

I just found out these are just baby palm plants. My question is, are they the same variety as the huge palms they sell at the stores?
@HealthyHouseplants
@HealthyHouseplants Жыл бұрын
Mari443Garrett1, The parlor palm is a variety of palm tree known botanically as Chamaedorea elegans. In its native habitat, which runs from Mexico to Honduras, it will grow 10-16 feet tall outdoors. These palms generally reach 2 to 7 feet tall indoors, depending on how warm the home is and how much light you have. Many of the huge palms you are seeing selling in stores are different varieties, so not parlor palm. Although you may find for sale larger, more mature parlor palms. You will recognize them from the thin leaves.

@cynthiathomas404, Parlor palm, which is botanically known as Chamaedorea elegans can do okay in water, but there are better palm choices for water, such as Chamaedorea cataractarum, and Cyperus alternifolius, which is not a palm but a sedge, but grows palm like leaves.

@@aislinghorgan4887 Parlor palms do drink quite a bit, so it could be that you weren't watering enough. Regarding the water, they are sensitive to chlorine and fluoride and can develop leaf tip burn from that. I'd see how the plant does as you water a bit more.

Sharon Holmes, I would agree with that assortment for an indoor jungle!! Spider mites thrive in dry conditions, and Parlor Palms need some moisture, so if you can keep things on the moist side, you should be okay. One thing to keep in mind--the more plants you have, the more humid your indoor garden, because houseplants humidify each other! So, I'd go for the jungle! ;)
