However, it's interesting how “Columbia” became “Colombia” in South America whilst in North America, many areas are called “Columbia”, including British Columbia in Canada. The name itself, comes from an Italian named Christopher Columbus. The name “Columbia” was picked up by revolutionaries such as Francisco de Miranda and Simon Bolivar for their own identity politics. In particular, Bolivar saw the name “Columbia” as representing an identity for his part of the Americas and switched the "U" of its Italian spelling to an "O" to reflect Spanish.
