Please adopt! I adopted my birds when they were 17, 6 and 6. And they are all wonderful, friendly, happy birds.

I prefer people do what works best. Sometimes it's to adopt and sometimes it's to get a baby. I wish for people to have a blissful bond so that they take good, loving care of their parrot either way. However, I have several adopted parrots - and I adore them!

There is a risk with baby parrots: they can forget their 'parrotness' and perceive themself as tiny humans. This can lead to severe behavior problems. This is especially true, if you have one bird only (often propagated by pet shops for easier bond). So: if you want babies Tage two at the same time. I got my two Jardine's Parrot at the same time, both at 4 month of age. Both bonded to me, without problems and I think they still know they are birds. They just turned two last month ( time is running so fast!! ) Of cause: you are not safe of this problem if you adopt a older bird from the t rescue, because the first owner May have made the mistakes. But a good shelter may know their birds and tell you. Take your time, you don't have to choose on your first visit at the selten. And See, if there is a bird that chooses you!

They are also weak towards illnesses. That was why many die at the bird stores or by breeders. The reason why they have behavioral issues was because they were not taught being a parrot. To reduce behavioral issues, teach them to fly as weaned babies. Many parrots were not. That can ruin their motor skills and brain development.

You know I completly agree! 2 is a magic number with parrots, whether they can be caged together or not. It makes a huge difference in their health and wellbeing. How are your two Jardines doing? Happy hatch day to them!
@ParrotBliss

Yes, I agree. I talk about letting them have the best of both worlds, knowing they ar a parrot and having a parrot with them and knowing a human.

@@ParrotBliss They are dringend fine. And I must say: they are a perfekt choice. Very mellow, friedlich, sometimes even cuddly. It seems to me, they behave pretty much the same as your capes. For every one who can't get hands on a cape, try a Jardin's instead. At least here in germany they are easier to get (and maybe they are more affordable, I heard capes are really expensive in the US. Jardin's ain't cheap either, though. But adopting a parrot should't be a spontanous decision, anyway. )

Best results for me have been adopting birds that choose me . Second to that would be my baby cockatiels we raised at home. Hand feeding baby birds is not-necessary to making a good bond, you can let the parents do the feeding. You just have to make sure you handle the babies daily once their eyes are open. And a proper breeder will not sell baby birds that are not weaned yet, too much chance of things going wrong.

I love what you wrote! I agree, my YNA chose me and we have the strongest bond. I also agree that handling the babies is key. I always say that spending time - a lot of time- with a parrot makes all the difference.

My Hahn's Macaw is a rescue, I got him when he was just 2 years old. I took him just attle over a year to bond with me, He is now over 7 years old. He is a little snuggle bug. he love to sit on my shoulder and snuggle by my neck. IHe don't like to be touched to much. I love him dearly. I just took him to the vet he is a good weight and his blood work looks good. He is a one person dragon and I'm OK with that for I live alone.He enjoys watching TV with me. All you birds are so amazing I really enjoy your videos Keep Up the great work.

If a parrot chooses you, like you mentioned about Lorenza, that can be the strongest bond out there, despite the age of the bird

Absolutely. My strongest bonds are the 2 that chose me. It's like a gift! I count them as blessings. Do you have a parrot?

Conures, right? People tend to do better with them, so they aren't as available as rehomed or rescued birds. I think most people get a conure and love it for ever!

Great video. I have two parrots ( hahns and blue crown Conure) I bought as babies, although I love them, the bond with my adopted older parrot (blue fronted amazon) was deeper. There are reasons for that (he only wanted to bond with me) but I’d definitely want to adopt an older parrot again or another older animal. It’s a different relationship to go the rescue route.

I'm with you on adopting rescues; Doesn't matter what kind of animal, I just love seeing them change over time as they gain confidence, learn the rules and become part of our multi-species family. I almost never know anything about our animals' histories before they come to us and they've usually not come from the best circumstances, so there are typically some behaviours which need modifying..... but that's all part of the process. Having said that, I completely understand why people would want a baby bird they can train and bond with from an early age.

You got a great Amazon, like mine. Some of it depends on the species of parrot. For example, my female Indian Ringneck will never bond with me in the same way. They are too independent. I like rescuing birds. People seem to think they are always an emotional wreck, but it's not true. Often times they are super sweet and loving or they become this way with time, love and patience.
@ParrotBliss

It's so wonderful to have different kinds of experiences with a baby vs rescue. I like that you allow your rescues to change. I know that they 'follow the pack' and that you don't have to teach them the rules. You may have to enforce one or two, but I a multi-species family means an inclusive setting in which they come around willinging because every creature wants to belong. Very cool.
@anserbauer309
@anserbauer309 Жыл бұрын
@@ParrotBliss You're right that for the most part, our new animals just 'follow the pack' and learn from the older ones what is acceptable and what's not, with a little correction from me when needed.... with the exception of the alpacas. They had been abandoned in someone's messy divorce and came to us with anger issues and a real determination to be 'top dogs' over all the farm animals and people... and had the physical presence to enforce their dominance. Standing on their back legs, they're over 7 feet tall and they can strike out with their slashing front hooves. Fortunately, our huge ram was raised by the dogs and was very protective of them and us, so when the alpacas were in attack mode, he'd step in and create a physical barrier between them and whatever they wanted to attack. If they continued, he'd just bulldoze them out of the way. 8 years later, the alpacas are much nicer animals, but they were really, really hard work!

I've had parrots when I was a child into my teen years with my parents, they was fun. I want to get a grey now that I'm in my 40s and want a young grey but don't want to do the weening process. Is 4 month old grey past the weening process or should I shoot for 6 months old?
@ParrotBliss
@ParrotBliss Жыл бұрын
They wean between 4 to 6 months, so if they are weaned it may not matter. Great birds!
