It's Not "Should I Get a Bird at a Bird Show?" It's About Finding the Right Seller.
When considering bringing a new feathered friend into your home, the question shouldn't be "Should I get a bird at a bird show?" Instead, the focus should be on identifying reputable sellers who care deeply about their birds' well-being. Whether you're at a bird show, a breeder's facility, a pet store, or a rescue organization, the health and happiness of your future parrot companion depend largely on the quality of care they received before coming to you.
Seller Selection Matters
I've encountered a wide range of sellers in my experience with birds. Sellers can be breeders, pet stores, rescues, or exhibitors at bird shows. In each of these settings, I've seen both sick birds and exceptionally healthy ones. The key isn't the location or type of seller but their commitment to the birds' health and well-being.
A sick bird can be emotionally and financially draining. Veterinary bills for treating an ill bird can quickly add up, and the heartache of losing a beloved pet is immense. Therefore, finding a seller who prioritizes their birds' health is crucial.
Recognizing a Reputable Seller
So, how do you identify a seller who genuinely cares about their birds and is likely to provide you with a healthy parrot? Here are some key indicators:
1. Clean and Well-Maintained Environment: A reputable seller will keep their facility clean and their birds in spacious, sanitary cages. Look for clear eyes, clean feathers, and active behavior in the birds.
2. Knowledgeable and Transparent: Good sellers are knowledgeable about their birds' needs, species-specific behaviors, and health care. They should be willing to answer all your questions and provide detailed information about the bird's history, diet, and any medical treatments or vaccinations.
3. Proper Socialization: Birds that have been well-socialized with humans are more likely to become friendly and affectionate companions. Ask the seller about how they handle and interact with their birds daily.
4. Health Guarantees and Vet Checks: A reputable seller often provides health guarantees and proof of disease testing (often the parents). This demonstrates their confidence in the birds' health and their commitment to ethical selling practices. Of course, they cost more because testing and treating adds to their cost.
5. Positive Reviews and References: Look for reviews and ask for references from previous buyers. Positive feedback from other bird owners can give you confidence in the seller's reliability and the health of their birds.
The Importance of a Healthy Bird
Choosing a healthy bird from a reputable seller means you're more likely to bring home a companion who will be with you for many years. A healthy bird can become a cherished family member, bringing joy, companionship, and a special bond that only a parrot can offer.
The primary concern when acquiring a new parrot shouldn't be the location of purchase or price, but rather the quality of the seller. A reputable seller who genuinely cares for their birds will ensure you bring home a healthy, happy bird. By paying attention to the seller's practices and environment, you can make a well-informed decision and start your journey with a new parrot companion on the right foot.

I’m glad you’re are educating people about being aware that some pretty bad contagious diseases exist. Always quarantine and be smart about what birds your healthy parrot interact with.

The thing I don’t like about bird expos is, I’ve run into too many sellers that just want to sell birds. They’ll tell you anything to make a sale. I like to have some sort of relationship with the person who either is a seller or breeder. I also want someone who encourages me to ask questions and encourages me to call if I have a question post purchase. Plus, as you brought up, I’m terrified of bringing home diseases. And, I want to bring home every bird I see. That’s so funny that you had a parrotlet named Piranha! My cat’s name was Gina Piranha! She was a biter! She never used her claws.😊

I don’t think it’s fair for me to say that sellers at shows just want to sell, but I do get that feeling…

Yeah, there's a bird store near me that often have birds with diseases, none of the birds have toys and the owner has a track record of treating his employees like trash. He also sells unweaned birds to people who have zero experience handfeeding. The list goes on. He also blames the buyer on diseases the birds come with. He's just worried about money money money. I thankfully have a breeder friend who keeps her birds clean and she cares about the birds.

That's disappointing to read-- but not terribly surprising. I'm glad you know a good breeder. Hopefully, in time, stores or rescues like that get unpopular and stop getting birds-

With you all the way on assessing the situation on its merits when deciding to bring a new bird into the household, implementing quarantine arrangements and providing access to different people. Right now in Southern Australia there are a bunch of different bird flu outbreaks with the majority of cases being transferred by wild bird populations. We're seeing entire poultry farms wiped out, restrictions on domestic bird transport and the instigation of quarantine zone movement restrictions for government workers on farms throughout the region (I've closed my own farm to electricity workers and government employees/contractors). Still, there are those who think the rules don't apply to them. Being aware of the broader health environment, current warnings and potential threats to our avian companions is a responsibility we all have to protect our birds, whether the problem is predominantly external, population/genetics-driven or seasonal. If you've stopped learning, you have no business being responsible for a parrot, mammal, or any other animal companion..... period.

I'm so sorry to hear that even some poultry farms have been wiped out -- it breaks my heart for the chickens and the people. You know that I've had my experiences and I get devistated. Gutted. I keep hearing that there are new strains of PBFD and one of my vets said that if she gets one more case of PDD, she'll scream! I told her I'm paranoid right now and her facial expression said, "That is wise" followed by a verbal confirmation. People don't realize how important it is to get a bird from a reliable source-- who still can't promise 100% health. There is no such thing, but at least they do what they can and are responsible. I can't really wrap my head around people who don't take good care-- of a bird's health/hygine or another human's. What people do to one another, let alone to animals-- just the thought can keep me from sleeping at night... A, are the wild cockatoos being affected?

@@ParrotBliss It's my understanding that mostly waterfowl and migratory seabirds; ducks, native geese, gulls, terns and waders are being affected by the wild version of the flu, but that when it makes its way into chickens and turkeys, the virus mutates and become far more deadly. Since we have many, many wild waterfowl at the farm mixing with our domestic birds, transmission is a risk. Not we can do about it though.... the birds have to eat! Apparently any bird _can_ get HPAI (including parrots) but that it is not known to exist in Australian parrot populations. Scary stuff though!

Right on with you thought of 'some' rescues, iven run into ones that hoard and dont really place.

Right? It's heart-breaking. Others just want any bird that they can get 'free' and then sell. I think finding a rescue with integrity is important.

I started with trying to rescue, filled out numerous applications. I called one, never got a call ever. Some hoard, some sell, some only sell to their friends. I have had the same experience with dog rescues. I just don't get it.

Glad it was helpful! Yes!!! Ask questions! It's hard, one the one hand, vendors are there to sell. On the other, when they care and have put care into their birds, they will want to answer or tell you how to get in contact with them afterwards to answere more questions. Good luck! LMK how it goes

I didn't realize that some rescues don't actually seem to be "rescues". I don't know which direction to take now, being older I didn't want a baby bird, I was interested in rescuing a bird, now I'm not sure. One of my college aged kids wants to get involved with birds as well, maybe the shady rescue is not that answer.

Talk to Bird Gardens of Naples. Fantastic and they place birds outside Florida too. Or they will recommend a good rescue. Yeah, some are shady, but some are fantastic and I love what they do.

Not easy to find- and you have to be willing to pay at least $3,000 to about double that! Depends on whether you want quiet and semi-independent or quiet (as quiet as parrots get) and more affectionate. If I was getting quieter and sweet, I'd look at Cape, Golden, Blue-head Macaw, Timneh... off the top of my head.
