Franklin Island on the Georgian Bay and near the Sound and Franklin township near Huntsville and the Haliburton forest add so much to the evolution of Parry Sound. Franklin was the naval guy who was sent to Tasmania to oversee that colonial ( prison ) system in the 1830's after having been in Upper Canada while the Rideau Canal ( Brockville and Cornwall to Ottawa ) was being built. After his stint in Tasmania he was sent with Crozier to study the Arctic ( general story goes - to map that elusive Northwest passage ). Crozier had gone to the Antarctic with Ross on the Terror and Erebus which were redesigned for the mission to the Arctic. Crozier and Franklin and their crew would never make it out of the Arctic. Parry was part of the story of Franklin or vice versa. Just had to say that before watching the video... !!!! does it fit with the 1980's version put out here ?

after watching it... well he did mention Parry as being an Arctic explorer but he never noted Franklin.. the bit about J R Booth and the invention of Depot Harbor was interesting... Rideau went to Ottawa ... Booth's railroad went from Ottawa to the shores of Georgian Bay and then CN became a corporation in 1927ish when Grand Trunk assets were merged to CNoR assets... and the 69 highway corridor connected Parry Sound to the mining sector in the Sudbury basin and to Toronto markets... all fits together in the bigger picture of Canadian evolution and commercial progress... not to mention ... in 1897 Booth was moving into the area while PM Wilfrid Laurier was rewriting the rules of ( free trade ) raw lumber trader ( logs ) and how they could be harvested by foreigners...

My ancestors are from Parry Sound. I wonder if you know any Moffatts? My grandfathers first wife's name was Dorothy Falkenburg Moffatt. From what I understand the Falkenburgs were lumber tycoons there in Parry Sound. Do you have any interesting stories about Parry Sound you could share? I want to visit the area if I get a chance. I'm so interested in it.
