Budi shoots better with his off hand than a lot of folks I have seen using their dominant one. Bloke, seeing you get battered by that Reichs Revolver reminded me of a question I have been wondering about. What is it about certain combinations of firearms and calibers that really beat you up? I had no problems shooting for an afternoon with my 7.7 Arisaka sporter (it came that way, someone sank a lot of cash into it), but 3 clips through my Steyr 95 Stutzen left me with the biggest shoulder bruise I've ever had, and the only time I've ever developed a flinch. That thing was evil.

A lot of it is ergonomics, for instance .455 feels way worse in a S&W Hand Ejector than from a Mk.6 Webley. I also find Mosin butts quite comfortable so don't get too battered, but a 1903 Springfield beats me up good and proper... It's often how the gat fits your body, which can make a huge difference.

I've had the same experience. I own a CZ-82 in 9x18 Makarov. For a relatively chunky, superbly made pistol in a caliber less powerful than 9mm Parabellum, it's one jumpy, bitey li'l shootin' iron! The percieved recoil is harder than either of my regular 9mm pistols unless I load +P ammunition, and my Glock 20 *feels* more comfortable, which is bizarre, since I feed that behemoth full-house 10mm loads (180gr @ 1300fps). A lot of it is going to be grip geometry, how that grip geometry interacts with your hand. I've shot a Polish P-64 that uses the same cartridge as the CZ-82, for example, and that was far less pleasant to shoot than the CZ, primarily IMO due to the superb ergonomics of the CZ's grip.

That flinch reminded me of a time when I was on the PD. We were at a meeting in a nearby city, and after the meeting, the host department opened up their range so we could all qualify with our service revolvers (1970's). I carried a Colt Trooper Mk III in .357 Magnum, the dude next to me was from a small one man department in North Dakota. He had the city gun which was a very old S&W M/P (model 10) that had become way out of time. We were on our first round at 25 yards when he began to fire at the same time I was firing, his gun shaved lead and it struck me in the nose and right eye causing some damage and a lot of blood. I developed a hell of a flinch that day and could not complete my qualification. This was highly embarrassing for me as I was my departmental sharp shooter always qualifying at the top of the list, I also held the rank fo Assistant Chief of Police at the time. A few weeks later I went to the range with our range officer and completed the required course of fire and qualified but it took some practice to overcome that damn flinch. I still have the scars where the lead penetrated my nose and my eyelid has a large spot on it where the lead impacted, I was glad that my eyelid was closed at the time.

I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on with the Rast and Gasser, and how it compares with the Swiss 1882, since both have the Abadie system. The slightly more powerful 8mm Austrian has eight chambers, of course, but came along just in time to be obsolete! Great work, both of you! Nice collection!

I've always liked the big-bore Webleys. I just wish they had been built _for_ the .45 ACP with clips, or the .45 Auto-Rim if you hate clips. A 4 in. barrel, w/decent trigger strikes me as it would work well as a defensive revolver even today. My very first centerfire pistol was a 1917 S&W, so I'm a fan of revolvers...owned that gun for 50 years, still love it!

These old "crappy" revolvers are really fascinating in their own way. I am troubled by some people's distorted beliefs about old weapons and their use. Even though before the two world wars and during them, shooting was practiced in the army by standing in a line with a straight back like competitive shooters, it by no means means that a soldier was expected to fight while standing with a straight back, left hand in pocket and right hand holding a weapon. According to Darwin's teachings, such behavior would have irreversible consequences.

Speaking of slim top continental revolver grips, I've encountered a similar issue with a totally modern S&W model 637 crimson trace lasergrip. Sure, it is a compact .38 special, so recoil is substantial, but that slim top grip makes it just painful as the gun twists and slams into your hand. Absolutely awful. And more than that - completely unnecessary, as slimming or shortening the grip in that area doesn't really yield any benefit in concealability or weight.

A question that I haven't researched yet, but maybe someone will be able ro provide a quick and decently grounded answer. What, if any, were the rationales formally given (in officer, police or sports training) for the very common practice of shooting pistols one-handed? One can imagine the possible rationales, like: 1) shooting one-handed allows to position your body sideways to the target, making yourself a smaller traget for return fire; 2) keeping one hand free for other things, like horse reins, restraints of arrested suspects etc; 3) possible ergonomic advantages due to how our mucles work (as I read in one book on pistols and shooting techniques, although that book definitely isn't very reliable as a source); 4) simple lack of neccessity for supporting the dominant hand for pistol shooting ("accuracy be damned, it's not manly enough to shoot two-handed" kind of thinking). But what were the actual rationales given to explain the use of one-handed shooting technique? Or was this style of shooting just taught and practiced with no attemts to ground and explain it?

Use with a sword, reins or a horse or similar in one hand, plus huuuuuge inertia meaning that two-handed shooting only becomes a general thing quite a while after WW2.

@@BlokeontheRange Considering that "Blading" doesn't become a thing until much later (weaver stance and such) I don't think body position was really considered much. I don't give artist renditions much credence, but often they seem to be very nearly chest-forward in duel depictions, and really with one handed shooting, most people do better square on. The few bladed off stances I've seen in old paintings are clearly sword dueling stances, so could well have been what the artist was familiar with, or what the shooter was more trained in, no way to know. And then of course we see hard blading from '60s? up until body armor becomes "common" in the '90s and we go back to the more neutral stance. I agree with your assessment that the presumption that the off hand was occupied lead to the training doctrine, as well as a degree of 'Well, just hit him first, and he cannot hit you" seems to be a common theme, considering we are talking mostly about officers or specialty troops.

The classic duelling stance was side on, reducing the target presented. Modern one-handed target shooting stances are variations on that at the extreme to about 20° off from that. The practical one handed stances are squarer on, but that's due to recoil control, shooting under movement etc.

Hi from Pennsylvania. I love my revolvers all rugers. And I absolutely love them . Very accurate and very reliable. They are 22,357, 44 mag. I even hunt with them. My 357, 44 are used for hunting. And they will take any game in north America. This video is awsome. And the old revolvers are how my new ones developed from. God bless😊

I used to have one. It was a wonderful revolver. Mine was in so so shape, and I wound up trading it for an another revolver that I wanted more. I wish I had it back.

You all seem to have some excitement with the 10.6x25 revolver. I suspect none of you would be great fans of the .454 casull and bigger revolver rounds. The original .45 colt loads had heavy black powder charges that for some civilian loads were 40 grains in the old balloon head cases. The US military eventually issued the shorter Schofield cartridge that worked in the .45 colt and also the .45 schofield revolvers that had lesser recoil. German Ordnance cartridge and the Reichsrevolver fired the 10,6 x25mmR 262 gr (17 g) LRN 705 ft/s (215 m/s) 298 ft⋅lbf (404 J). Seems to be a similar load recoil wise to the .455 webley, the hotter loads are listed at 265 gr (17 g) FMJ 700 ft/s (210 m/s) 289 ft⋅lbf (392 J)

The Mark VI has a rebound on the hammer and it is SAFE to load six rounds in any of the Webley Mark revolvers.

Let us not forget it was the Swiss who made the Luger pistol. One of the best autoloading pistols of its time, and still capable even today.

Well, it was designed by Luger, who was an Austrian and he based the design on the German Borchardt pistol. The Swiss Army then first adopted the Luger pistol and as far as I know it was by their demand that Luger developed the 9mm Luger cartridge for it (they didn't want the wimpy 7.65 mm parabellum but thought the pistol was good)

the Swiss bought them in from DWM in Germany until some way through WW1, when that became impossible and they started making them themselves.
