Part 1 - Delonghi ECAM23.450 “GROUND TOO FINE, ADJUST MILL”

Coffee machine Delonghi ECAM23.450 sometimes starts to show message “GROUND TOO FINE, ADJUST MILL” and later “INSERT WATER SPOUT”. Usually this message comes if you want to do double extra strong espresso, cappuccino or something similar to maximum value. And it does not mean that you should adjust mill or water spout will help you. It can help to reset problem and to prepare few coffees but soon the problem will return. Why? Because solenoid valve 5301VN2 (new part number 5213218421) broke down and you should replace it with the new.
Old version of valve is 5213215821).
This is one of some possible troubles indicated by the message “GROUND TOO FINE, ADJUST MILL” and later “INSERT WATER SPOUT”.

This message comes on because of flow meter won't read enough water flow into the machine. It might be clogged solenoid or infuser and water tubings. the tubing can be removed from the pump and follow all the way to find out where is the slow flow is happening. Starting from brew group back to the pump and pump pressure should be the points to be checked.

Hi man , first of all thank you for nice video . I had same problem so ( mill to fine adjust ...) but this problem happends everytime . No water comes out . I can not make a cleaning or water dispense . I changed both solenoids - nothing changed . Pump starts running but after 2 seconds pump is very quit - there is pressure block . When I take out hose from heating element from input there is a good presure of cold water . But on the outpur from hesting element I have no pressure only weak leaking . Heating element has no hole and looks fine . Could be a problem inside ? What do You thing about it ? Thank you very much

Updated - Works for Magnifica S Cappuccino (ECAM 22.360s) My machine had made over 5,000 coffees from new and had the "Grounds too fine" error come up This was cured by replacing the solenoid valve. Cost appox £20 plus £10 delivery from Germany. Inside of machine is the same as this video. Undo heater element (but no need to completely detach) to get access to valve. Unclip tubes and unscrew as in video to replace. This was all done within an hour. Now works like new and saved me spending circa £800 for a replacement machine. One month later and the "Grounds too fine" error has returned. I will attempt further remediation and update...

Hi, Thanks for video. I have same problem, but just i have different machine it`s 36.365.m primadonna xs, and i can`t make any coffee, just milk. If i press latte it will do a milk, and then it will start to do coffee, and stops, and will show the message: ground too fine adjust mill. You think it solenoid valve too? and part number 5301vn2 it looks same for my machine too. Please let me know, what you think. Thank you.

Hi, If I understood correctly you can't make any black coffee or coffee with milk. You can make only milk froth and hot water. Yes? Does the froth quality is good? I am almost sure that water pump become broken, I had similar case not so long ago. But you should understand that I can't answer 100% without touching the machine. This message appears when coffee circuit is damaged and coffee can't flow. It can be because of some variuos problems. But my experience shows that if the problem is solenoid valve so it sometimes is working or sometimes no. But If you can't make coffee at all (100%) it should be a jam in the circuit or not enough of pressure. And it seems that water pump is working but really it is just simulating work with no pressure.

Hi, Thanks for a fast reply. Yes no coffee at all, yes and milk froth looks good, an hot water. But when i try to do coffee, it looks like it starts, but nothing happen, and it looks, like it try to push it trough but can`t get it out. I tried to rinse the system, but getting message, Water Circuit Empty Fill water circuit, water delivery press ok, i runs through spout ok, when i press it, but when i try to rinse, same message again. And in grounds container, where should used coffee grounds, like a disk, it`s water and coffee grounds, like mixed. So you think it could be a pump? Thank you.

Hi. Actually I had very similar case. Hot water OK, milk froth OK, no coffee, no rinsing. I was testing all water circuit step by step starting from the end. First of all I found that water doesn't reach the brewing unit. After that, I found that water doesn't reach mechanic valve 7313244171. And at the end I found that the water pump doesn't make pressure enough and water doesn't flow. But be careful. I was disconnecting some pipes and turning on the machine and it can be dangerous because water can be sprayed on the electrical part. Maybe is better to bring the machine to the service centre and they will fix it. You should know that sometimes repair of the machine at home can be more expensive that at service centre.

Hi. My 23.450 machine is giving the same error. At first it only gave small amounts of coffee, like an 1oz then it stopped supplying coffee all together. The coffee grinds are dry in the discharge holder. I was thinking of ordering the valve and the flow meter to be safe. What is the function of the bottom valve? Where can I find a service manual or schematic for this machine? The valve gets noisy if I use the water sprout, like its opening and closing.

Hi, I got the same message in 3 different cases. 1) solenoid valve; 2) IFD outlet problem (you can find video in my channel; 3) broken water pump. you should understand that this message show not clear problem but result of pressure loss. Carlos Arias Yes I did. That solved the problem. I did also replace the flow meter at the same time though. It was only $6 so I covered my bases.

Do you have problem with "GROUND TOO FINE, ADJUST MILL" ? You should know that there are more reasons of this message. Please check video Part2. Also I just had case with the same error message and it result of broken water pump. Water pump was working but pressure was not enough.

When I click the Left Corner Button (Rinsing) The Bar Is Loading TIll Half but No Water is coming out, Then it displays "GROUND TOO FINE, ADJUST MILL / Insert Water Spout' . is it The Valve or The Water Pump ?

Hi. Is it possible to make hot water? Is it going from hot water outlet? I had the same situation and the water pump was broken. in my case main symptoms were: 1) Hot water worked, it was possible to make hot water and it was going out from outlet; 2) after pushing coffee button grinder was working, but coffee not going from outlet, "ground too fine, adjust mill” message appeared and grinded coffee was going to garbage container; 3) rinsing was not working, after pushing rinsing button, rinsing started, was trying to rinse and the message appeared “ground too fine, adjust mill”. It seemed that pressure was not enough and it was only two possibilities - 1) water pump is bad or 2) something jams water circuit. In my case was version 1.

thank you , when hitting Coffee Button grinder is making coffee but not pouring any coffee from outlet, the message Ground Too Fine Adjust Mill was Showing. Also When Hitting Rinsing Button, No Hot water is Coming Out. I think it's what you said [Water Pump] is damaged, Can you share the spare part needed for it? my model is :ECAM23 450.

Hi, could you answer some questions and I will try to find solution.Does the problem appears just sometimes and you can make coffee or is it impossible to make coffee even after using water spout? Does the problem appear making any particular type of coffee? Cappuccino, double coffee, extra strong? Or no difference?
