I was not expecting this video to have this much content!! Thanks for surprising me!! Steve, I had a friend that went to his friend builder and they ASSUMED since new the specs were ok checking one rod! It blew up. 3K later fixed and that was a discount? This is a 1,300hp NOS engine. I'd be mad! No assumes on 1,000+ engines!! And now he has parts grinded down to spec below fat standard. I expect my engines blue printed at this point. Steve please explain what a blue printed engine is. It's an exact to book spec engine. :) Funny how balanced and blue printed engine was a big deal forever Explain what that means. I know what it means and is but think it would be nice to share to others what it actually is.

If I won this I'd request to purchase a turbo cam so I can Twin Turbo it and convert it to fuel injection so I could use a Holley EFI. I'm actually about to start my first build a 1978 Trans Am and still need a motor. Every single motor I want is way out of my price range. So this is an incredible opportunity. After so many years I'm finally doing my dream build. Plan on making it a drag car.

The piston TDC check with the dial indicator is wrong way. Better is the piston stopper. Best way is the piston stop-screw is in the cylinder about 0,4 x the piston stroke. For excample the stroke is 4", the stopper is 1.5" in from the deck. This is most accurate way to ensure the piston TDC. You understand if you look your crank and connecting rod angle. The dial indicator is never so excact.

All that effort timing your cam and within a few hours of running, the chain stretches and gears wear in and it all changes a few degrees. That’s why I run a gear drive.

Dude, my wife would absolutely let me out of the dog house if I could stick that in her 67 Mustang that I blew up and let sit for 10 years....... 😏 Been married 31 years as of 2 days ago and I still get hounded about when I'm gonna get her car back on the road. Over 10 years and every day, I get reminded. This was the car she bought when she was 15, took her drivers ed, test, etc. Its just a small block 4-speed coupe but I'm pretty sure I would go before the car. Lol!!

Are the 2 pieces that make up that adjustable cam sprocket that tight of a fit that you don’t need to tighten the bolts while rotating the crank to check the duration? I figured they would move a little and give you a off measurement?
@DodgyBrothersEngineering2 жыл бұрын
There is enough friction between the two parts and the bolts have just enough tension on them to prevent movement. The dial indicator that is set up in the lifter bore has an extremely weak spring in it, and there is a roller tip on the lifter to prevent mechanical friction, so there is virtually zero resistance to cause the two cam sprockets to move apart. The only situation you are ever likely to encounter where that becomes an issue, is if you were to bottom out the dial indicator (so it can't move any more becoming a solid link) then depending on how tight the bolts are, there is the potential to move the sprocket.

Congratulations on winning Drag Week. It's a testament to both your knowledge and your character with supporting Tom throughout the entire event. Swapping pistons, no sleep, swapping injectors, no sleep, dealing with a self-ejecting trailer, no sleep, and of course if that wasn't enough, having to swap a throttle cable. This comes as a complete surprise and is a testament to how generous you are. We're here to get an understanding on where engines are today and the depth of knowledge you're willing to share is nothing short of both admirable and remarkable. Giving away a complete engine is unheard of and speaks volumes to the kind of man you are. Some of us follow you for entertainment while others follow to get a better understanding of how to build an engine correctly and you deliver on all counts. Lastly, thank you, God Bless, and good luck to whomever wins this engine. Cheers!

That 555 is very similar to my 557 build that I built and installed in my 1978 Chevy BIG10 pickup that I ordered new with a 454. I used a Dart block 4.500” bore with an Eagle 4.375” stroke crank, Edelbrock square port heads, Edelbrock Air gap dual plane manifold with a 850 Holley (that I bought new in 78). I also used a solid roller cam but somewhat conservative because I use the truck to pull my 26’ enclosed with my dragster. I wish I would have taken the time to dyno the motor because it is a torque monster. I still have the original T-400 transmission that I beefed up years ago and 3.73 gear that I ordered it with. I ran it a few times a the track and ran high 11’s. Its pretty heavy to me for a short bed and when I weighed it with cast iron heads it was almost 5,000 lbs with me in it and I’m about 215 lbs. funny thing is that the gas didn’t seem to change hardly any, still 9 to 10 mpg.

If anyone has ever checked a brand new timing chain-gear set-up after a few runs, this degree bizz is ummm....not worth the time? It's why pro-stock engines run Jesel belt drives. Unless you're into replacing the chain-gear setup once every few days, go to a gear drive system..........takes a lot longer for the gears to develop wear and back-lash.... Still wondering why the floating wrist pins?.......makes no sense at all....

Hi, Question..... there's no need to use a stretch gauge on the rod bolts ? If not when would it be necessary? How about the arp special grease they say to put on the threads and under the heads of the bolts? I'm building an VW aircooled type 1 motor and they recommend the stretch gauge and grease. Thanks for all the info
