The cardboard bolt trick works great. If I'm working with a gasketed part I trace the new gasket on the cardboard with a Sharpie then punch the holes (slightly tight) with an awl or screwdriver.

After your repair, how did your tranny hold up? I'm debating whether to personally rebuild my '99 4r70w. I'm not 100% sure as of today. I'll ask performance techs and including my Ford agency dealership mechanic shop for pointers and advice this upcoming week of March 14th, 2022.

My transmission has held up very well and I still DD my truck every day. The only system that is weird for me is reverse. No I never rebuilt a lot of the internals because I found out the overdrive band was the culprit. Rebuilding reverse is pretty simple because there’s not a whole lot going on at the back end of the transmission. However I spent around $1000 to get everything I needed to rebuild my transmission. At the time I found a company that I could buy a transmission from for $1600, ship it for free, and it had a five year warranty. Looking back that was a no brainer and I would probably have gone that route.

The very first piece (cover containing the fluid pump), you left out the info that there is a giant "O" ring on the perimeter ,& that's why it's stuck on there & hard to remove. Need a puller for this ? ., just get some threaded rod at the hardware store that fits this cover, & some nuts,& large washers .Next take the head off your sledge hammer (or anything heavy with a hole in the middle) , & put it on the threaded rod so it will slide between 2 nuts & washers to create a hammer like effect. Keep the threaded rod handy ,as you might need it to assemble the clutch packs you find inside.Again you'll have to get creative& use some plastic pipe fittings etc.
@TheMinuteMasters4 жыл бұрын
Good tips man! 🤙 Thanks for sharing! I’ll definitely keep them in mind if I do this ago. You are essentially making a slide hammer with the threaded rod and hammer head.

No real need to pre soak the clutches. They install them dry from the factory. Also, kevlar clutches/od bands are for race only. I wouldn't use that kind of material for street. The OEM clutches and bands are just fine.

It takes me 30 minutes to teach someone how to install a pan gasket, 45 minutes for a pump and 2hours for a valve body. And you don't soak clutches.
@TheMinuteMasters7 ай бұрын
Ok, I’m curious now that you mentioned the pan gasket. Mines been leaking and I’ve tried a number of different fixes and none of them seem to work. What’s your secret to installing the pan gasket? I have a manual that said to soak the clutches to prevent a dry start. So you install them dry? With what you’re saying, sounds like I got pretty damn lucky with my install .
@onetransmission78717 ай бұрын
@TheMinuteMasters there are at least 5 kinds of pan gaskets. There are no instructions anywhere on earth that tell you how to install. That's why you're having trouble. Soaking clutches makes reassembly very difficult. Nobody does that. Starting with a cork and rubber pan gasket, one of the finest ever made. To use one either the pan and/or trans case has to have a "grip rail". In aluminum case it will be a blank or void cavity between pan bolt holes. Pan usually has a rib or rail stamped between each bolt hole. Buff and clean case and pan. NO SEALER IS EVER USED! Torque specs are always for the bolt diameter and FOR A GASKET OR SURFACE THAT DOES NOT COMPRESS! Put the edge of the pan on your bench and if needed use a ball pein hammer to straighten the rail around each bolt hole. Install the pan and gasket. I usually buzz it down with an impact. Final tightening can only be done by "feel". Use a 3/8" long ratchet or breaker bar and begin tightening. Give each bolt maybe 1/2 turn till you learn the correct feel. Imagine a kitchen sponge in your hand. You squeeze it tighter and tighter till it's totally compressed. At this point your pan gasket can't absorb any liquid of any kind. Usually takes me about 3 trips around the pan to get the gasket compressed. Final thing I do on this gasket is to take a good sized ball pein hammer and tap down along the outer edge of the pan. This is a condensed version of how to correctly install the most common gasket. Remember, you asked.
