Sheikh KARAN SANKOUN of Touba?
The contemporary sages of Touba, perpetuating the work of their ancestors of Diakha, have taken the decision to make better known the scholars who have contributed to the influence of this DAR'L'ISLAM, in the footsteps of its founder KARAMOKHOBA TOUBA. Among these scholars of Touba, special attention deserves to be paid to Sheikh KARAN SANKOUN, because of his great contribution to the influence of Islam and Islamic sciences.
Sheikh Karan Sankoun, whose real name is Sheikh Muhammad Taslimi ibn (son of) Sheikh AbdelQader Karan Qutubo ibn Sheikh Muhammad Taslimighan ibn Sheikh Salim Diaby Karamokhoba Touba, was a renowned scholar and Mufti Diakhanké, recognized by all his contemporaries as a generous ulema at the highest degrees of Islamic sciences "Alimoun'Mawsou'Iyyou" in addition, a "Waliyyou", a close friend of Allah (SbT) and beloved of the Prophet Muhammad (psl).
He is the second son of the famous Karan Qutubo, from whom he will inherit the knowledge and the baraka. His mother is Fatimata Ibrahima, known as "Fanta Diakhaby", a lady renowned for her piety. An outstanding scholar, Karan Sankoun distinguishes himself from many Diakhanké and/or Foulah scholars of Fuuta Jallon by his extraordinary erudition and his vast knowledge, recognized by all the ulemas, Mufti and Mukkadam as one of the greatest scholars of Senegambia ( Guinea, Senegal, current Gambia, Gabou in Guinea Bissau…) of his time.He will also have been the Mufti of Touba of his time, High Ranking Sheikh of the Tariqqa Khadriyya following a renowned silsila, an influential figure both in Fuuta Jallon, in Kakandé (Boké up to Boffa) and in Upper Guinea (Kankan) and in Senegal, whose DIABY GASSAMA family originated from its ancestor Sheikh Muhammad Fatima DIABY of Boundou Didé, a locality in eastern Senegal, Tambacounda region.
Summoned by the French settlers, he refused to hide and courageously went to answer before being arbitrarily arrested in Touba on March 30, 1911, before being deported to a prison in Port-Etienne (now Nouadhibou) in Mauritania.
During his arrest, he will impose calm on the Diakhanké on the verge of revolt, reminding them of the way of KARAMOKHOBA TOUBA, namely his recommendations for a life free from all violence systematized by the theological theory of "Jihad an Nafs" (war of the soul) and study.
KARAN SANKOUN will pay heavily for his attitude as an independent scholar and for the concerns that Islam gave to the colonial authority in the context.
A decree of the Governor General of French Guinea, dated June 21, 1911, condemns him to 10 years of internment, and fixes the place of this internment in Port-Etienne. He was immediately transported there before being brought back a few years later to Dakar under house arrest.
During his years of deprivation, he will still be recognized by all those who have known him for his piety and his unparalleled erudition by all, and will be released to join Touba in 1917 after more than 7 years of imprisonment in total, during a return that has remained etched in the annals and memories.BIBLIOGRAPHY
He was one of the greatest Diakhanké scholar and teacher of the early 20th century, prolific author of nearly 55 books dealing exhaustively with all the Arab Islamic sciences without exception, such as At'Tafsir, Al'Fiqh, Adab'l' Arabiya, Al'Oussul, Qawa'Idou'Arabiyya, etc. and even medicine!

LIBERATION: Return to Touba in 1917
END OF LIFE: From his return to his death, he will share his science with all the families of his brothers in Karambaya, as well as the Diakhanké and the Ummah as a whole, by tirelessly devoting himself to teaching all sciences of Islam, hence its nickname "SANKOUN" expressing the idea of pouring rain and divine generosity.
It should be remembered that during his lifetime KARAN SANKOUN was honored and pampered by all the most learned of the sub-region of his time, such as, among others, Sheikh Maodo Malik SY of Tivavouane, Tierno Bubbah Aliou Ndiyan and Tierno Usman Kossa of Labé, Sheikh Sidya Babah of Boutilimit, etc.
His influence was great, and he will have greatly contributed to the Islamization of peoples and the qualification of elites through the training of countless scholars and ulemas, who will be disseminated throughout West Africa.CONTACT :
