Thanks Dave! Yeah, it's hard to work out where the best camera angle is, there's more than just woodworking to learn...! But good to know that you think it's good. cheers Steve

Good video Steve, very informative. I am toying with the idea of starting this as a hobby. What should I look out for when buying a lathe?, more so a used one please.
@SteveCashmoreWoodworks6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gary! It’s difficult to suggest a starter lathe really. Everyone has a different opinion and different budget etc. Plus I’m in the UK and you may be in another country, I don’t know? So the lathes available to me might be different. Also I was given this basic lathe, a Coronet CLO/24, so I’ve never had to buy one (yet). I would say a small lathe like this is fine if you don’t want to spend much. It has only three speeds and a belt which you have to physically move when changing speed. The two horizontal parallel bars can get in the way of your tool for some cuts. Removing the tail stock is a painful and slow operation. So I would buy the best you can afford, if it doesn’t work out then you can always resell it. But to make it a more pleasurable start I would avoid lathes withe belts that you have to physically change. Hope this helps?

Great video, which I found really useful as I’m just getting started in wood turning. Liked & subscribed! Could you answer a question? When I’m turning a spindle from square stock I end up with lots of wavy lines in my work piece. Any ideas why? Thanks. Mike
@SteveCashmoreWoodworks3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, thank you. I think that this is quite common when you start woodturning. It’s all about tool control I reckon. Try to slow down a bit as you traverse across the spindle. Take further finer shavings. I assume you’re using a roughing gouge? It will probably just improve with plenty of practice... hope this helps?

Hi mate .looking at buying a wood turning machine from Amazon. Any good do you think.only want to turn a small bowl or goblet..I'm a builder so good with power tools mate .these machines look dangerous if your not trained, put the tool in the wrong place is deadly lol.

Cheers. I would suggest that you find yourself a short course near you so you can get some expert advice on what lathe to buy. Or you could find a woodturning club near to where you live. There’s always plenty of folk who will advise you on what is best as a starter lathe. I’ve never bought a lathe yet, this one was given to me and that’s how I got into woodturning. A new lathe is in my future but I will be taking advice when I come to buy it! Also, doing a beginners course will help you turn safely and not get yourself into trouble. There’s a lot to learn! Good luck mate... 👍
