Part 1: This tutorial introduces the concept of Tonicization. Although I’ve covered the use of the IVm , b9, and diminished 7th, this is our first serious look at introducing harmonies outside of the key You will find that Tonicization / Secondary Dominants are a wonderful device to create forward energy.

I just wanted to say that your video was the first video in the last 2 days in my attempt to understand secondary dominants. It is mind-boggling to think all the others could not explain it as you did. I look forward to watching your other videos. Thank you!

Glad I was able to help with the understanding of tonicization/secondary dominants. Part two carries on, while Part three discusses the use of sub-dominants using Tonicization principals. My other tutorials are easily accessible from my website: www.davidburt.com On the right-hand side of my homepage just click on the tab marked Tutorials.

Super helpful, especially since I've been halfway trying to teach myself theory for the past two months due to coronavirus stay-at-home orders. Thank you!!

I find it very strange that I can hear these things without knowing what they are. All the transitions just sound right.

The rule of thumb says you don’t use a technique unless you believe that it improves the quality of the music. Tonicization tends to energize the music to create forward movement. That is a good thing provided the composer chooses the right place to implement it.

Damn few days back I was having trouble understanding Secondary Dominants then I saw a theory video which was on a black board to understand. All i know is secondary dominants come from the IV chord. It also conducts the Circle of Fifths going anti clockwise. C always wants to go to F and F wants to go to Bb. Where are you from sir?

Thank you Ill keep this in my mind. Its honestly so hard to understand through a video about music theory. I love when a person explains to me one on one. Canada is my favorite place. I hope to stay there some day.

In Part 3 of: Tonicization / Secondary Dominants, I touch on the difference between Tonicization versus Modulation. I plan to do a tutorial on that subject at some point down the road. By the way, "Where do you live"?.

Well I am from India but migrated to the Middle East. I start bass few years back around 3 or 4 but never had good teachers. I realized that there was something even more beautiful than just the instrument and I fell in love with music theory. I dont understand alot of things but I do much best ... the fact i never had studied music theory in school much just made me love the subject even more. I just hope someday when im old i know everything there is to know about music theory... its just... so amazing. A subject i never had
