In the process I've learned networking basics but my biggest struggle was understanding how to implement VLANS. If you don't want to spend $1000 you can build almost the same setup for around $500: - Unifi Dream Machine [UDM non-pro] $300 - 8 port 60W POE Switch [US-8-60W] $110 - 2x Access Point [AP-6-LITE] 2x $100 - TOTAL: $510 Note: The Dream Machine comes with a built in WiFi access point. I have pretty much this setup and it's amazing.

I like Unifi because of it's scalability. In our house we had issues with the wifi range all over the place (the previous owners build this house like a fort, the interior walls are 15 inches thick concrete). We started with just 2 AP's and a VM as cloudkey. Never had any issue's and even my garden is now covered. Soon followed the USG and a real cloud key.

I've been using Unifi for about 4 years at home, not perfect but a big step up from consumer grade equipment which was never all that reliable. Centralized management simplifies things significantly as I have 10 unifi devices (and a pfsense gateway). There are some advanced configurations that can't be done from the GUI, but I can do 99% of what I need to. If starting new, a UDM pro, a few AP lites, and some switches makes a lot of sense.

@@TheHookUp I can't wait! Need part 2. I re-did my entire home network using your series from last year and excited to see the updates you made to the configuration. I have been using the UDM-Pro and got lucky out of the box with zero issues. Added the 48port POE Pro switch from Ubiquity using SFP cables for all the UI to UI connections. Future proof port density and to cover my cameras and other wired devices like TV's and anything else I could home cable run. Going to add a UI 10G switch for my Synology NAS and a home server running VMware ESXi that I have my Blue Iris VM on for cameras. I want to enable a logging instance for the UI stuff as the phone app is weak and I'm not going to live in the UI so exploring some analytics solutions with logs from the UI platform. Love your content, channel, and views on things.

I appreciate that you mention (albeit very briefly) your negative experiences with Ubiquiti. One thing that I miss in all these videos hyping Ubiquiti is just that: their stuff has bugs all over the place - or is it hardware issues? I still haven't figured out after mailing with their support for six weeks. Their support sucks: long response times, inconsistent communication (probably because it's a different person responding every time, but you don't know because the don't sign with their name), and if you mention more than one issue, they just pick the easiest one and ignore the others. The biggest issue with Ubiquiti/Unifi is, however, that it will not work with third party switches or access points. Not only will clients connected through those devices not show up in the controller, but the whole network will become unreliable. It's worse than the Apple ecosysten, which couldn't care less about compatibility. So if you get into Ubiquiti, beware that you need to go all the way and will basically be locked in. I'm still not sure whether I want to do that. But the UDM looks so nice with its blue LED...

One thing you did not mention and I hope you do in the upcoming videos is client connectivity to wifi 6 AP's. Please cover how most new laptops and desktops do NOT come with wifi 6 chips, and need to be upgraded. Love the channel!

This was an expensive but well timed video. I've just moved in to a new house and we're currently having the place rewired for electrics and networking. I had ordered an Edgerouter X, LR-AP and Gen2 Cloud Key. I'm now returning the lot in favour of the UDMP and two AP-6-Lites. I already have a 48 port zyxel PoE switch so at least I can save the cost of a ubiquiti switch! Looking forward to the rest of the series!

@@artiem5262 The zyxel is a L2 managed switch. I like the idea of it all being the same brand and being able to manage everything from one place but I can't justify the cost difference at the moment.

Thanks again - nice to see an update - Good you mention the line "remember WiFi is a two way communication protocol" a lot of people still don't get that and turn the radio power all the way up thinking that will fix their issues, when it just creates more of them in most cases. Exception to this might be if you are doing a wireless backbone but then you are usually using two powerful WiFi devices.

I bought UDM pro, 24 port POE switch and wifi 6 lite APs. That will do it for me for a couple of years easily. Surveillance and controller is done through Synology.

I really like Unify stuff, but I must say that getting pfsense setup on a spare pc wasn't difficult, and there are a ton of tutorials and support available as well.

I use pfSense in my school lab, and it's really common in cyber security activities and competitions because it's free. I agree that it's a good alternative for people who want to dive in deep, but definitely not as easy to use as UniFi.

It's definitely not for your average person with no interest, but I would say that a mesh system would work best for that type of person (as you mentioned). I suspect though that a person that needs the extra power of a Unify system probably already has the level of competency in computers and networking to setup a basic installation of pfSense. (aka how to follow a guide.) I personally found it easier to get pfSense running than Home Assistant. (aka all of the guides are perpetually outdated.) (Love your videos by the way!)

I swapped out the fans on my switches/gateway. Used a Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX, Premium Quiet Fan, 3-Pin (40x20mm, Brown) instead and there was a noticeable dB difference. Thanks for the content!

I received my new UniFi 6 Long-Range Access Points (2 of them for home) and set them up over the weekend. My WiFi 6-enabled devices saw an immediate boost in wireless networking speed. I have a fiber gigabit connection at home, so this translated to much better internet performance for those devices as well. Really looking forward to part to so I can dig into the fine-tuning I should be doing on these new APs. I already made sure they were not on overlapping channels, and did a few other minor tweaks. Hoping I'll learn more from your next video. Thanks!

So good to know that we can add local accounts and disable cloud access to the UDM controllers. I am about to fix the home network setup here since me and the wife are both working from home and I "almost" gave up on getting the UDM because of the need for a cloud account. I already have an AP-Lite, and will add other pieces later. For now, it'll be an UDM, change my ISP provided "router" to bridge and use my D-Link (DIR-868L with custom firmware) as a "temporary" switch for the living room. Over the weekend I was actually watching you previous video and taking notes to speed up my setup when I get the UDM. If you have any new firewall rules that you didn't mention before but are useful (like for Plex server, Alexa, etc), please add those in your next video or in the blog post, so we can follow. I really like how simple and secure your setup was, with the 4 networks and 3 separate VLANs and I am planning something very similar to that. Now waiting for the next parts in this series. 😁

Great to see this series coming out. I recently upgraded my home equipment to Unify and I got lucky and got in on the first Wifi6 LR batch and got my WAPs installed already. Used your previous tutorial to setup my VLANS and firewall and looking forward to see what tweaks/tuning you suggest. I recently did one round of tuning on my wifi and for the first time ever got my 2017 MBP to have a tx rate of 1300 Mbps and I actually saturated my 1 gig ISP link on an iperf3 test :-) I've never had this level of wifi performance before. I'm loving the upgrade so far. Oh ... and sorry, already placed my pre-order with HolidayCoro for 2021 upgrades to my show.

WiFi 6 is actually a huge improvement simply due to OFDMA. Yes, it requires clients also to be speaking the same language ... but it is a very important leap forward for wireless. WiFi6E is great in that we get more spectrum, but OFDMA still allows that spectrum to be used much more efficiently.

Watching this again and I just realised you missed a couple of things describing WiFi standards.. 802.11a was 54mbps in 5GHz and 802.11n also supports 5GHz band and although mostly treated as optional, a lot of AP's did have 802.11n in 5GHz, and as such they also support 802.11a

What are your thoughts about using pfsense along side with your unifi switches/access points? I am in the process of upgrading my network. I currently have unifi gear and was wondering if I should invest in a unifi switch with pfsense or jumping to the udmp and start building out a rack. I know the udmp is more simple but is pfsense worth it?

pfSense is super powerful, but you will need to be a much more competent network engineer to use it with your unifi stuff than just using a UDM Pro.

5:54 - 802.11n operates in both the 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz range (not all devices support the 5 Ghz though). It's sometimes labeled as 802.11na (5 Ghz) and 802.11ng (2.4 Ghz), although those are not official designations.

For a small hotel 4 floors with 25 rooms is better wap like U6-lite / U6-pro or UAP-IW-HD-US. I think it's good idea to put 1 wap per floor becouse the is lot of brick/concrete wall. Thanks for helping

one thing i would mention, to lower the cost, would be to use an 8 port POE switch instead of 16, depending on size of network. But this way you would have 8 POE ports, and 8 non-poe ports out of the UDM. Most cases sufficient for a home network, or even a small business.

Also, I would be more willing to entertain the idea of a unifi dream machine if it didn't require a cloud account sign-in for initial setup. The fact that it can be disabled later still doesn't erase what it says about the company direction. And trust and support of the company is the most important thing to me when it comes to devices that are in charge of (and can see all of) all of the traffic on my network. Food for thought: I think the concept of trusting companies is a bad idea. Companies are like living entities, when times are good they have freedom to grow, make promises and generally make good decisions. However, when times get tough all bets are off and survival becomes the only goal. The best thing to do is look at the "why" behind things. Why would Ubiquiti require cloud login for activation? My guess is to keep track of 2nd hand devices and prevent the second hand market for EoL devices. Ubiquiti needs to keep selling equipment since they don't have subscription or licencing fees, and keeping old but capable devices out of the market is advantageous for them. I don't know for sure if this is their reasoning, and I certainly don't love it as a consumer, but it makes good business sense. Now lets look at their reasoning for possibly spying on your traffic. How much money is to be made from selling data on DNS queries, DPI data, and internal unencrypted traffic? Probably not a ton. How much money would be lost if it came out that Ubiquiti was spying on their security focused user base? All of the money. It is advantageous for Ubiquiti to keep your data safe, so they probably will, not because you can trust them, but because it's good for them.

@@TheHookUp interesting thoughts (and thanks for your thoughtful reply), but i disagree on the why part. I think what is most likely is that the number of logins they have tied to hardware in the field is a metric they are trying to increase... probably for investor reasons. I see lots of companies moving to force existing customers to login, or run a certain way, just to improve a metric. The amount of effort microsoft is putting in to force users to sign into windows using a microsoft is insane! to the point where you need to unplug the network cable before installing windows 10 to even see the option to use a local account. and then, with every update they are putting up windows telling you that you haven't finished setting up your computer yet, and you are missing out on features. It is sickening. The trend is to get people away from local accounts and use cloud accounts. So this step forces you to make an account and sign in, with no other way to use the device at all. The fact that you can log in and turn it off is just something they are hoping most people don't do but it will appease some of the crazy folks like us. I just find the direction wrong and in the company's interest and not the customer's interest. And as you say, this is just one step - the direction of the company almost guarantees there is more to come.

I had Unifi for a while but had compatibility issues so I changed to Fortigate and had no more problems. So.... I wish you would do some stuff on Fortigate. I have a 60E router with 24 port POE Fortinet switch backed up by a 24 port non powered switch. I have 6 open ports :rollseyes) Thanks for all you precious time

Great job. Clear clean instructions. I used it on a USG-Pro-4 , cloud key and a UniFi Switch 16 POE-150W. I have successfully blocked all internvlan communication and so on. I don’t have any Ubiquiti access points. I have 2 questions. 1. I wish to block internal communication between devices inside the guest network? 2. Is there a way to limit speeds via mac accress or IP without using a Ubiquiti AP? I know this can be handled on the Ubiquiti APs I am looking or a firewall rule or a setting without using ubiquity APs.

Ubiquiti equipment is very expensive gear and not targeted at the normal home owner, but if you need shiny boxes to show off to your friends and money is no object, go ahead and buy it, for me and normal people it is well out our price range.

Sounds like you aren't someone who would utilize its abilities and that's fine. But for people that would/will utilize the equipment to its full potential... what it can do comparatively is very inexpensive. Trust me nobody is using Ubiquiti as a status symbol. If I wanted to do that id be rocking Meraki equipment.

I like and use many of the UniFi products (AP's, switches, caleras) but I am not a fan of their Unifi routing equipment. I do use UBNT's EdgeRouter's for a basic setups, but if I need anything like WebFilter, etc. I go straight for Untangle.

I got myself a second hand USG-Pro to handle the higher speed internet I now have, but I really would like to see Unfi do something in the home user budget range. I can't justify the cost of the UXG Pro for home use

Thanks for all your videos! Would you please do a video explaining your computer hardware & software? I'm wanting to mimic several of your systems/processes, but I'm not sure where to begin with the computer components... Questions like: do you have individual computers running your home assistant, nvr, etc, or are they all running on the same machine; what operating systems, software, etc? Upgrading from the Amplifi HD soon. Good to see the Ubiquiti business products are just as simple to configure. Definitely beats reinstalling PfSense on a new Raspberry Pi every other year😝

Great timing, Rob!! I've been wanting to emulate your network infrastructure ever since you put out the first series, and I've gotten more serious about it lately. I've been concerned about some negative press I've seen related to Ubiquiti recently, though, and I'll be the first to admit I don't completely understand the jest of it. But, you seem to remain loyally sold on the system, so I'm pressing on in that direction. As others have mentioned, I'll be looking forward to your follow-ups. Thanks!! ~Frank
