The scene that you picked up on, when he is at Lois' appartment and struggles if he should tell her his secret or not, is a textbook example that should be shown in acting schools on how convincingly play a dual character. That's a magnificent performance if I ever saw one because it is so subtle. A masterclass of acting.

I ... loved ... this movie. I remember my father telling me back in the summer of 1978 about a "Superman movie" coming out soon. Even at 11 years old, I recall being cynical enough to say to him that I thought they would mess it all up. Still, in December of that year, Dad took us kids to see it in one of the last remaining single-theater cinemas in town. It had a huge lobby with an incredible and classy chandelier and everything. We snuck in coolers of iced tea and hoagies, and even a cassette recorder as well, to capture the audio from the movie... all my Dad's idea, by the way. We were all AWESTRUCK at the spectacle that was "Superman: The Movie", and it was made extra sweet by my father's childlike wonder and glee at seeing his favorite superhero come to life in such a literally perfect way. I played that tape until the player itself finally stopped working. It's funny to have such an emotional attachment to a film as I do to this one. While it is a fantastic work of art to be sure, in my heart I know that the real reason is the eternal connection to my Dad that it gives me whenever I see it. For this reason above all, "Superman: The Movie", will always hold a special place in my heart that is more than just the love of a great film, far more indeed. It is the connection it gives me to the very first Superman I ever knew and loved, who I was so very blessed to call ... "Dad".

Cameos of note: Kirk Alyn, who played the first ever screen Superman in movie serials in 1948, was Lois Lane's father on the train when young Clark runs past. Lois Lane's mother, in the same scene, was played by Noel Neil, who had famously played Lois Lane herself in the same movie serials in 1948 and the later 1950's TV series with George Reeve as Superman. Rex Reed, the film critic, also has a cameo as himself in the scene where Clark follows Lois out of the Daily Planet, and Rex is walking in, and Lois introduces them. (I guess Rex is the film critic for the Daily Planet in the Superman universe.) And Larry Hagman well known for starring in the sitcom "I Dream of Jeannie" (1965-69) and J R Ewing on "Dallas" (1978-1991) was the General at Miss Tesmacher's "car accident" that suggests "mouth to mouth and a vigorous chest massage". The Director Richard Donner also has a cameo himself in a scene only included in the expanded version where he talks to Clark Kent on the street after the first appearance of Superman.

I just love the way Superman smiles into the camera at the end. What a difference compared to the other Superman actors, who try to be so dark and brooding. This is why I just LOVE Christopher Reeve's portrayal so MUCH! He is just so positive, optimistic, and hopeful! 😁

Exactly! Superman is always represented just like the other superheroes these days: permanently pissed. That's totally wrong for this character. It's like casting Wednesday Addams to play Shirley Temple! Superman is all about boundless charm and optimism. His symbol is said to be Kryptonian for the word, "hope." If you go back to watch the George Reeves' "Adventures of Superman" 1950s classic TV series, it's a full-on charm offensive. That tradition continued through Christopher Reeve. Superman is not the Hulk, or Punisher. He is Batman's best friend, but that's a case of opposites attracting. Superman gives Batman hope and that's a job that only Superman can do!

Christopher Reeve was actually inspired by Cary Grant's character in Bringing up Baby, who was also then based off of Harold Lloyd, who was so known for his "Glasses character," that people didn't recognize him WITHOUT the glasses! Christopher Reeve based his performance as Clark after Grant's character, and the descendance of the character from Lloyd to Reeve really shows. I wish we had a modern Superman who was played so well! T-T

Did you notice, at the end of the date scene on the balcony, when Supes flies away, it is one continuous camera shot with no cuts all the way to Clark being at the door? They did this all "in-camera" in one take by having the part with Supes flying away rear-screen projected and then they just pan over to the door where Clark is waiting. I LOVE clever filmmaking like that!

The main reason Reeve is the greatest Superman (no offense whatsoever to Cavill, or Hoeckner, or Routh), is that he showed that being America's Boy Scout didn't have to be boring: the hero can be fun. He shows the fun in being the good guy with his dad jokes, his breezy way of doing things, and an overt earnestness that makes him awe-inspiring. He doesn't command respect--people give it freely and willingly--and he responds with a smile, maybe a wink, and a wave goodbye. His Superman is the reassuring parent figure that everyone would want. And THAT is why he is the best Superman.

Otis's mistake wasn't why the missile went to New Jersey. It was always Luthor's intention to have missiles hit at opposite sides of the country, as a distraction for Superman. His choice of Hackensack was probably done specifically because her mother lived there.

The brilliance of this film is that it captures the perfect balance of action, romance, tragedy and comedy. And there's an effortless gravitas to bringing this iconic american myth to the screen. Excelllent filmmaking, respecting the source material and portraying it properly in a realistic setting. There's no cynicism to this film. Just re-watch the scene where he first saves Lois in Metropolis. No one is frightened or intimidated by him. Watch as he lands and takes off. It's not a thunderously kinetic landing or take off. It's done with pure grace. It's Superman as Superman is meant to be portrayed. He's a friend to the world and the world is happy to accept him.

I remember watching this very beloved movie multiple times in theaters way back in ol 78. I was kind of obsessed with it back then. The Lois death scene STILL traumatizes me a little even after all these decades. I had to look away a few times when you got to that moment 😂 Another fabulous reaction by you and I agree with you so much...newer movies are soooooo unoriginal. Love the reactions. People actually did research on the Superman effect and it's actually real. People would just change the posture and put on glasses and people actually wouldn't recognize them because of how the brain sometimes processes things. That's why the Clark Kent persona works because people literally don't pay attention even tho Clark's a muscular 6'4 gigachad. You should watch Smallville if you haven't already it's amazing

The key to Reeve's characterisation here is probably 'vulnerability' - which is probably not allowed today. And Hackman, despite in some senses being 'stunt casting' (a huge name playing a comic role) finally understands the assignment here. It must have been impossible to tell whether this would have been a success. And it promoted a lot of work.

This movie placed Smallville in Kansas, not New Jersey. The comics originally didn't mention where Smallville or Metropolis were, but after this movie, Smallville's always been in Kansas ever since.

This movie was so much fun! Superman II was filmed at the same time as this, but because of a dispute between the director and the producer, things changed. For another Christopher Reeve movie (that requires a box of Kleenex) - check out the movie Somewhere In Time.

Wow, it must have been quite the experience to watch the original Superman movie after watching the films that came later first. Christopher Reeve not only made people believe a man could fly, but showed the charm, charisma, and heart of Superman as his witty disguise as Clark Kent that was more than just the glasses. You could see in reverse where the other films copied small parts from the original. Man of Steel's Clark Kent had more of brooding Batman personae, and loss of Pa Kent to a tornado paled in comparison to the heart-attack of the original and Clark's heart-breaking quote, "all those powers and I couldn't even save him". Thanks as well for reacting to the extended cut with parts I've never seen before. I'll be adding that version to my collection soon.

Tbh, when I first saw this movie, I didn't know it was about Superman - caught it on TV, ironically, during police guy following henchman to the train lair. As soon as he was pushed onto the tracks, my mom switched the channel. Didn't see the whole thing until way later. Still wishing for the Soldier with Russell xD

RE: "Can you read my mind ?" The poem that Lois recites to him mentally as he flies with her is actually related to a power he has. He can not read her mind, but he does emanate a power that she can feel that makes her wonder about whether he has telepathy. It is referred to as "super-hypnotism". It is how he is able to hypnotize people into never guessing that he is Clark Kent. It over-powers their belief system with a type of mental brute force. He can also make people forget things, but this power is limited. The film makers wisely avoided having Luthor meet Clark Kent because it might not work on Luthor.

The trailers sold it for me as kid." You will believe a man can fly was the theme selling point. The movie was ahead of its time,and great. The TV smalleville is one of the best super hero TV show, and explores Clark understanding himself and his powers before becoming superman . It has 10 seasons ,introduces other DC characters each year, and Christopher reeves around season 2 is introduced and plays pivotal role in Clark learning who he is.

Thank you for really taking your time with this reaction! So many others I’ve seen rush through it. This film came out when I was 14, and I remember the hype . I had all the posters and fanzines. Fun fact: in the train scene in Smallville with young Lois, the older actress who is the mom is actually Noel Neal, who played Lois Lane in the TV series with George Reeves. Also the actor who plays Perry White is Jackie Cooper from the 1930’s Our Gang/ Little Rascals serials.

Yup, when I saw Perry White's actor I was giggling over another show I saw every w/e during the late 60's early 70's. Larry Hagman(Maj. The movie is so calming and some parts because Christopher He's a calming person His aura the energy he gives off , Hard to fake that I didn't know him personally I wish I did but from what I hear he was a very Calming individual good guy.. Always loved his presents on screen And interviews.. as a kid in the 80s he was my hero I had the underwear and everything and bedsheets..lol And whenever I see the scene about Hackensack New Jersey reminds me of home .. Excellent point about people handling things themselves rather than always relying on Superman. In “My Super Ex-Girlfriend,” Una Thurman’s character wasn’t going to stop the missile. When her boyfriend said somebody should do something, she said, “Yes. Like the Air Force. That’s their job, isn’t it?”

I remember anti-smoking posters in our local library with Superman on when I was young. 'I can see the damage that smoking does inside people's bodies, that's why I don't smoke' he said on them. Christopher Reeve WAS Superman for my generation. I don't think there was any other live-action adaptation until 'Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman'. That series gave Clark a lot more character, you can understand why Lois loved him as well as Superman. Clark Kent was who he was, Superman was what he did. Although he still died later, Christopher Reeve recovered a lot more from his paralysis than the doctors thought the would, so he was a real life superman as well.

The actor who played Jimmy Olsen was also in the Justice League movie. Asa police officer. He was in the prison scene when the Flash goes to visit his father. He had them signing into a log book. He also was a police officer when Superman is battling the justice League. He was one of the cops arriving during the battle.

The visual FX and especially the flying technology was bleeding edge for that time. Into filming it wasn't clear that it was going to work. The entire cast and crew showed up to watch the first flying shot, when Superman leaves the Fortress of Solitude. The cameras rolled, Superman flew, and the director yelled cut. And everyone watching burst into applause; cheering and yelling and crying. That was the time they knew it was going to work. That was when they knew they had a hit on their hands.

The practical effects got real in the '70s. 'Alien', 'Close Encounters', 'Jaws', 'Star Wars' and others still look good today. In fact, some even look better than the "stretchy man" CGI I've seen in recent movies.

Superman didn't travel back in time. He flew around the Earth and reversed its rotation to reverse the danger that killed Lois, then corrected the Earth's rotation again so that's Lois's only problem was her car battery dying. Also, Superman doesn't kill, so he wasn't going to kill Lex.

That is a bone of contention. Some say that from Superman's POV while travelling at the speed of light, the earth would appear to be going backwards - so he went back in time. If he reversed the earth's orbit, terrible things would happen.

Obviously there are jocks who hate that flying scene. But in essence this is harking back to the romantic era of the character's birth. That's not present today and why probably it comes as a surprise to many. Or maybe - as someone whose mother alone was 36 when she had me in 1973 - I recognized a much older value system.

Interesting fact, Shree: Both this franchise and the first Batman franchise followed the same trajectory: Both had a couple of committed start up films, by the third were bringing in out of place comedians, and by the fourth, the franchise crashed in an unwatchable bomb. Any chance you could do the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher duologies? ("Batman", "Batman Returns', "Batman Forever", "Batman And Robin") That would be a hoot!

Awesome movie!! Even before I got into Tom Burtons batmans I saw this and believed that a man could fly. That ending with him looking at the camera is top notch. Growing up some miles down the road, my grandma told me they made the Lois death scene and now it's called Superman Canyon. Christopher Reeve is THE Superman.

Hi Shree, as someone who read some of the Superboy & Superman comics in the `60`s. I was delighted when we finally got to see this Superhero movie on the big screen. Previously, there had only been the 1960`s Batman movie based on the TV Series with Adam West. Which I enjoyed as a child viewer of the TV series, but did not take itself seriously unlike the later 1989 film. This film followed the comic storylines to great effect & so any comic fans could immediately feel a connection to it. Also, as you said, Christopher Reeve gave a superb performance as both his characters. Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did, I hope you watch the rest of his performances in the role.

Loved it! Loved your reaction to the Clark/Superman posture change, that almost gave me goosebumps! You're totally right! I took his performance for granted until very recently, those little subtle touches, I just sort of accepted him as Clark/Superman.....as if there wasn't any acting involved! Love your reactions to the whole Superman/Lois "romance" as well! The " can you read my mind" sequence always made me cringe and still does, but other than that I love every time those two are together on screen. Once again: I took their chemistry for granted. In real life, they didn't particularly get along! Margot Kidder was a hard partying Hollywood gal of the 70s and 80s, definitely had a coke problem in the 80s......Christopher Reeve was more clean living and also took seriously his "role model" image as Superman. That said, it did not prevent him from immediately taking on what was then "controversial" roles in the play "Fifth Of July" and the movie "Deathtrap". (I know you've seen Deathtrap already, that's why I'm bringing it up!). THANKS, SHREE!!!

I’m surprised that you chose to watch what’s referred to as the Restored International Cut (aka the Extended TV Cut) of the film. Many people when watching Superman will go toward the original theatrical cut from 1978; and not this version, or for that matter the 2000 Special Edition that was supervised by Richard Donner when he attempted to do a re-release in theaters to promote the film coming to DVD in 2001.

I was 19 when this film came out, but I've been a Superman fan since the age of 4. This version took quite a few liberties with the original source, but the result was so incredible that it didn't bother me at all. This is still my favorite live-action Superman adaptation. (BTW, I hated "Man of Steel." It was a decent science-fiction alien invasion movie, but it was NOT a good Superman story, as far as I'm concerned.)

As a bit of movie trivia-the scene of the dam collapsing, the water roaring down the river, and all the people running in fear was a clip from the motion picture Earthquake(1974) re-edited into the movie to save money.

Christopher Reeve was my first Superman. I saw this at a young age in the theater and then many times on video in the years since. I currently own the Blu-ray version with the theatrical and extended cuts of the film. It's great! The second movie is a lot of fun too. There are two versions of Superman II out there. The theatrical version and the Richard Donner cut. Supermam 1 and 2 were filmed back to back with Donner at the helm. But to make the release date set for the first film, they had to halt production of the sequel part way through filming. By the time they got around to continuing production on S2, Donner had had a falling out with the producers and was summarily replaced by another director. Richard Lester. Lester went a slightly different way with the film, making it more comedic and reshooting some scenes. Years later, Richard Donner went back and re-edited the movie his way and released that version as S2:The Richard Donner cut.

They must have had many many second thought about hiring Christopher Reeve, being that the REAL Superman in the hearts of millions was George Reeves, the star of the TV Superman in the 50s. It must have seemed like too weird a coincidence. These 2 actors were not related but it was an eerie coincidence. People thought that George Reeves was unreplaceable as Superman. That was really the biggest of many obstacles. And they ended up with a guy named Reeve. Both actors met tragic ends. This eternal iconic magic came at a price of tragedy.@@ShreeNation

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I saw it as a boy when it first came out and it began my man crush on Christopher Rèeve and John Williams. Chrstopher Reeve was lanky when he was cast and the filmmakers made him a costume with prosthetic muscles but he opted to build up his own body so they hired David ("Darth Vader") Prowze to put Reeve on a weight lifting regiment and a high protein diet. Reeve grew up in an academic environment and read literature growing up, not comic books so his interpretation of Superman was a fresh objective one.

This is the gold standard of Superman films and was the goalpost to reach for ALL superhero films, until Sam Raimi's Spiderman gave us a new modern standard, some 22 years later launching the age of Marvel. I like the theatrical cut of Superman better, but the extended is great too. This film embodies Superman's best qualities and has never been equaled. Superman II is a great follow up (please watch the theatrical cut and not the confusing Donner cut, which doesn't really play nice with the original) and to round out the trilogy see the 2006 "Superman Returns" which is a direct sequel to the original films, and in my opinion, very true to their spirit and tone. (Never watch Superman III or IV. Sadly, they're not very good)

Here's an interesting thing about Superman's powers ... Physicist Dr. James Kakalios has taught an intro to physics class where he examines how closely comics got the science right. He explicitly allows a one-time exemption from the laws of physics. For example, the Flash is granted the physics exemption of being able to move at super-speed. However, when you get to Superman, a single exception seems impossible. He has so many powers that he seems to need multiple exemptions. I saw Dr. Kakalios give an abbreviated lecture on the physics of super-heroes at a _Star Trek_ convention some 20 years ago. I spoke to him after the lecture to discuss Superman. He told me that some of his fellow physicists had informally published a paper theorizing that Superman has only one power: Superman can control inertia. If you think about it, that explains every single one of his powers. It also implies a few that we've never seen him use. In-universe, the powers are so fantastic that it's never occurred to Superman that he has them. Indeed, it's probably a good thing that it's never occurred to Superman that he has these implied powers. If you think he's god-like now, just wait until he figures out that he can't see through dense materials because of the way his "x-ray vision" works. He could use the same power not to see through lead, but to pulverize it simply by looking at it. Shooting heat beams from his eyes is dangerous enough, but pulverizing anything he so much as glances at ... It gets much worse. Controlling inertia is the most fantastic super-power imaginable. I looked up the paper that Dr. Kakalios referenced. It looks like a complete physics paper you might see published in a real journal. They went the extra mile by including complicated equations, charts, and three-dimensional graphs. I couldn't grasp it all, but I have to assume that they did the real math to prove their idea. So if anyone ever says Superman is OP, just tell them he only has one power: he can control inertia. 😎

@@ShreeNation if you want a semi-related note, Dr. Kakalios has some notoriety among comics creators. They sometimes consult him when some scifi thing is used in comics. This is because Dr. Kakalios solved the problem of, "What Killed Gwen Stacy?" Gwen Stacy was a Spider-Man character (she's in the Andrew Garfield movies). She was the first continuing character in a major comics title to be killed. She was a nice person, always drawn super-hot, and the death was a shock to everyone. Gwen appeared to die when pushed from a great height (it may have been the Brooklyn Bridge) by the Green Goblin. Spidey was able to catch her with his webbing, but she had already fallen a great distance. When Spidey got her to the ground, she was dead -- even though he successfully caught her. While the actual cause of death is a little more obvious to us, this was the 1970s. The target demo for comics was 12-year-old boys. There was no way they were going to intimate a couple of really nasty things that could have happened to Gwen. They simply said that a person who falls from that height would be dead before they hit the ground. Nice and neat. And also ludicrous. Some 40 years ago, along came fresh-faced comics geek Dr. James Kakalios. He wrote a paper (published in a fanzine) that proved the unpleasant truth. The sudden deceleration of being caught in Spidey's web caused Gwen's neck to snap. It was mathematically unassailable. Peter simply hadn't thought it through. Later issues that depicted the event (now to an older demo) explicitly retconned it -- and made it worse. Gwen hadn't been pushed by the Goblin, she'd stumbled. The Goblin actually tried to make a grab for Gwen, but Spidey was too quick and got her first. So not only did Gwen's neck snap, Spidey was now directly responsible. Ever since, comics creators have consulted Dr. Kakalios. When the Tobey Maguire _Spider-Man_ movies came out, he was interviewed by news outlets all over the world. He even made it into _People Magazine_ . No lie: he was in an issue with Nicole Kidman on the cover. She was giving her first interview after her divorce from Tom Cruise. Dr. Kakalios has remarked that Kidman was unaware of the precise calibre of the bullet she dodged. He's a nice guy. He's a near-genius in his field and loves to talk comics. It was fun meeting him. 🙂

How Superman flies was not a very scientific concept back in the day (basically: it just happened, that was it). The context of the scene is a mixture between "a dream sequence" and that they, maybe, didn't want the actors that close with no reason, specially after all the flirting (you can see that he catches and carries Jimmy Olsen, briefly, later on, the way one would normally expect XD). As time went on, and constant close physical contact between unmarried individuals wasn't an issue, there was no need to improvise weird poses for flying (and, as science advanced, comics finally found an explanation of how Superman could fly, and it doesn't involve transferring this ability to others).

Every reactor is obsessed with the lack of consent for the kiss. in my day (I'm 54), it was about gestures, in this case the "lean in." The guy leaned in, and if the gal leaned back or turned away, he was denied, and he backed off (if he wasn't a creep). Simple. Called body language. In this case, Superman wasn't conscious, so she awakened him Snow White-style. Not exactly rapey.

Re: "Superman II" - Jor-El warned him not to alter the time-space continuum. General Zod and the other 2 villains from Krypton were sent to The Phantom Zone, to live as 2 dimensional ghosts for however long it takes for science to find a way to "cure" their criminality. But with the planet destroyed, their imprisonment becomes eternal. The Phantom Zone is not connected to the time-space continuum in the normal natural way. When Superman threw the first missile into space it created an explosion that reverberates through time. The screen that imprisons Zod and the other 2 villains is billions of miles away and thousands of years away. Yet, it is also everywhere all at once as it relates to an atomic explosion of un-natural origin which is unlocked from time. Superman could have figured this out if he had not been in a big hurry. Could it cause an explosion in space which not only frees Zod but transports him and his 2 cohorts him to the vicinity of Earth ? Could Luthor contact them ? "Superman II" is brilliantly written with many twists that are a big surprise. Watch The Donner Cut.

This was the totally uncut version. Lots of things non fans didn't/don't get. Like when Clark pauses at the 1977 telephone. Booths almost no longer existed on a small % were still around he US. And maybe some really old 1940's- 1960's style ones in old office buildings/old hospitals. Superman in the old movie serials in the 40's, radio shows and some comics he'd change into Superman in. That clip at the very end. Where Jimmy Olsen is going to take a picture of Lois, He said Gee Whiz I had no film in my camera. That covered up a possible huge plot hole. That maybe some how. When Superman was holding him above the breaking dam. He took a picture of it bursting apart. It makes no sense either way. Even if he had film, that no longer even happened. Because Superman stopped the dam from even bursting by altering time. It's a movie when yourdealing with time travel. Even if you saved some unknown person. By living might end up a great villan, a serial killer, a dictator or doctor/scientist that finds a cure for Aids, cancer, etc.

This scene is just something else. No one really acknowledges it outside of pop culture jokes. Superman had a ton wacky powers (like shooting rainbows from fingers) back in the day, but this was kinda too much for everyone. So don't worry, it never comes back. Also, he doesn't go back in time, he spins the Earth so hard and fast it goes back in time.

I saw Superman in the theater in 1978. There are many scenes in this version that weren't in the theaters, like the water to the village. I am so glad you like this film, Supes has been in my life since 1953 (comics and t.v. show). I can't watch Snyder, at all, except for Watchmen, I liked that. Murderous Batman and Superman is not for me.

Yeah, this is the TV edit, which had a lot of extra scenes they cut from the theatrical release for time reasons, like the gauntlet Lex put Superman through when they first meet. I seem to recall that was a more common practice in those days, movies adding scenes (that were cut from theatrical release) to the TV edit because more time was available, at least until "director's cuts" officially became a thing. I could be misremembering though.

Glad you enjoyed this film. You picked up on every thing that is true about Superman, and Clark Kent. Also on why Snyder's Man of Steel did not work. He is incapable of understanding the character. That is why his films are crap. Clark is the ideal of an average American man with the will to help when he must. Clark, and Superman, are the two half of his character. He just puts emphasis on different aspects depending on when he is wearing his glasses, or the cape. Christopher Reeve is the definitive Superman. His physical shape was perfect too. Very healthy physically athletic. Actors like Dean Cane, and Brandon Routh did a wonderful job portraying the character as well. My frustration with the WB's leadership, and Snyder, made a horrible superman film. To the point were I do not see the character in it. Henry Cavill is a great successor to the part but was badly used. He is a nerd, he gets the character.
