By the way, in the book, Don Corleone knew how Carlo was treating Connie, but he refused to interfere. There's even a deleted scene where he stops Sonny from interferring in one of their fights.

Old school Italian family dynamics: What happens between a married couple is between them and them alone. When Sonny gets on Carlo's ass for telling Connie to shut up at the dinner table, Mama Corleone's only response is "Don't interfere!", which I've always found darkly hilarious.

Marlon Brandon's acting in the scene at the morgue with Sonny gets me every time... his facial expressions exude pain and hurt! Great reaction and commentary to this classic, also loved that you were distracted by the cat in the first scene, Brando was so natural with it and it wasn't planned, kitty just appeared on set and he rolled with it!

Love the last scene with the door closing on Kay (watch for it...you might see it again!), but the first scene, the long zoom out as the undertaker tells his story, the subtle way it introduces Don Vito...I'm hard pressed to think of a better opening scene in any film ever.

In the book, Kay realises the truth as soon as she turns around and sees the minions line up to greet Michael, right before the door closes on her. And their relationship is never the same again. She stays with him, but more out of fear than love. (I recommend the book even if you've seen the movies, it's a whole different experience, much more fleshed out).

I think that's all still implied in the movie.

@@anironiccoolness Yes of course. And the way it is implied is what makes it one of the great closing scenes in movie history. It’s just that Shree reacted strongly when Kay initially believed him, and I felt a clarification could be in order. Especially since it would lend an excuse to push the novel. :)

The influence the movie had is simply incredible. The concept of the head of the family being 'The Godfather' was created by Puzo for the book and after the film became part of the mob culture. Real life gangsters started imitating the speech pattern of Marlon Brando. Corleone is a real village in Sicilly that has produced many gangsters known as the Corleonesi. From the late 70's to the early 90's they were the most ruthless, violent and powerful Sicilian mafia clan and started the mafia war of 1981-83 that killed hundreds of people (the most intense stage, but started in late 70's and lasted to the early 90's killing thousands) and the head of the clan, Toto Riina, started a wave of terrorist attacks against the police, judges and the Italian state, blowing up tourist sites in mainland Italy and famously killing two anti-mafia judges, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.

25:54 The "cop" is meant to be Al Neri who becomes Michael's chief bodyguard and enforcer in the later films. A lot of people think that he's only disguised as a cop, but in the novel it's revealed that he was actually an NYPD officer who was kicked off the force for beating a drug dealer to death. He then joined the Corleone family after Tom Hagen and Clemenza see him as a potential replacement for Luca Brasi, despite his police background.

Reading into it a bit, the moment Kay insisted on knowing, Michael got angry not because she was prying, but because the question diminished her in his eyes by diminishing himself in his own eyes. Key is asking to be lied to, but so is Michael. He wants her to maintain his illusion of himself, and she destroys it for her own false peace of mind. The shutting door is perfect symbolism. She can't be in the presence of Don Michael, because her question meant she would only accept Michael, but she's looking at him as the door closes while he doesn't even seem aware of her anymore.
@jeffburnham6611

Michael didn't kill Carlo though. He wasn't lying to Kay and that's an important distinction to make. Michael may have ordered Clemenza to do it, but he wasn't the one did the actual killing.
@dudermcdudeface3674
@dudermcdudeface3674 Жыл бұрын
@@jeffburnham6611 Legalism and verbal games aren't part of Michael's personality. He lies before that, such as saying it's "not personal" when he volunteers to kill McClusky and Solozzo. It might even have been more personal than it seems: If McClusky hadn't smashed his face in, maybe he wouldn't have volunteered for the hit.
@jeffking887

You were spot on about Apollonia being a better choice for Michael. Not to justify gangster life, and not to give away anything from the second movie, but Kay wasn’t a Sicilian. Apollonia would never have questioned Micheal and she wouldn’t have been so naïve about the business. The baptism scene was brilliant. The increasingly dissonant organ music was perfectly foreboding. I remember when The Godfather was first shown on network television. The biggest question facing the censors was whether or not to keep the sound of Clemenza pissing by the side of the road. The three gunshots were fine🤔, but IIRC they cut the audio of the piss.

I think that it was inevitable that Michael was drawn in. Firstly, it was the attempted murder of his father and the actual murder of his wife and brother. His older brother Fredo was incapable and Michael was the clever son. In my opinion, there are also parallels with Shakespeare’s Henry IV. Henry’s son, Hal, is at first rebellious and does not listen to his father. He only comes to help his father (and saves him in battle) at a time of civil war. Prince Hal eventually inherits his father’s crown.

Even if Sonny went with his bodyguards, the squad was ready to meet them, if anything he saved them but yeah he could've saved his own skin if he learned to control his temper. The killing also reveals Tom's flaw, he underestimated the enemy and genuinely thought things were loosening up. The enemy was only preparing the hit exactly like the Corleones did with Sollozo. And you were right, after the botched job against Vito they didn't take any chances with Sonny.

It also begs the question about whether keeping Carlo out of the family business was a good idea. He clearly resented it, and vented his frustration on Connie. He had aspirations of being an important mafia player--which may have been part of his motivation to marry into the Corleone family--but he was kept on the sidelines. After the beating by Sonny he chose to betray the Corleone family. I'm not saying that there weren't good reasons for excluding Carlo, but that decision had consequences...

Once again kudos to your reaction to 'The Godfather'! You certainly noticed that if Apolonia wasn't killed in the car bomb that she would have made a good wife for Michael. She would never question him in any of his businesses. Just like Michael's mama, she never questioned Don Vito Corleone. Kay on the other hand, being an American gal she was pushing the question to Michael whether he had anything to do with Carlo's assassination, and of course he lied and she believed him until she noticed Clemenza kissed Michael's hand and Al Neri (dressed in a policeman's uniform and shot Brazini) closed the door. And also you figured out that Carlo was involved in Sonny's hit and that he was not in the family business on the orders of Don Vito Corleone, just give him a salary and he took his anger on his wife Connie. Can't wait for your reaction to 'The Godfather Part II'. Full of surprises with the Corleone family, those that can be trusted and those who commit betrayal.

Read about Sonny Black's death in real life. Very similar to Tessio's death in The Godfather. He was killed for unknowingly introducing undercover FBI agent Joe Pistone alias Donnie Brasco to other mobsters and even getting him proposed for membership in the Bonanno family. There's also a great movie called Donnie Brasco starring Al Pacino and Johnny Depp. Highly recommended.

Great reaction to one of my all-time favorite movies. Definitely read the book after you've watched the first two movies. Some fun trivia facts, the actress, Talia Shire, who plays Connie is the sister of the director, Francis Ford Coppola, in real life. The baby in the baptism scene is actually Francis Ford Coppola's daughter, Sofia, and she also comes back in the third Godfather to play Michael's adult daughter, Mary. The actor, Nicolas Cage, is the nephew of Francis and Talia and his real last name is Coppola.

WITHOUT GIVING AWAY SPOILERS I THINK YOU PROBABLY ALREADY HAVE SEEN A COMMENT ABOUT THIS BUT CORLEONE WAS THE VILLAGE THAT THEY WERE IN. SO THE FATHER WOULDN'T BE IMPRESSED WITH THE CORLEONE NAME, BUT I THINK SIMPLY WHAT MICHAEL SAID WOULD HAVE MADE THE FATHER UNDERSTAND JUST WHO HE WAS IN RESPECT TO BEING IN THE MAFIA AND THE FATHER ALSO GAINED SOME RESPECT FOR THE WAY THAT MICHAEL RESPECTFULLY ASKED TO MEET HIS DAUGHTER!! BUT THAT VILLAGE WAS NO STRANGER TO MOB LIKE ACTIVITIES SINCE THAT IS PRETTY MUCH WHERE THE AMERICAN MAFIA WAS BORN, OUT OF THE CLANS OF SICILY AND ITALY!! Responding to your questions at the end: my fave mafia movies are a three-way tie between the first two Godfathers and Goodfellas, with Casino and Donnie Brasco underneath those two. I love Mean Streets also./ Saw both Godfathers (I don't count the third one) over the course of two nights when I was probably about 11 or 12. I've seen it (both movies) so many times, I can do the entire saga from memory! They started running this on cable TV ad infinitum starting in the late 80s-early 90s so people are always rewatching it as they channel-surf and pick the movie up from where ever it is, lol.

Coppola has said that he views the story of The Godfather as that of a great king and his three sons. Each one represents a different aspect of himself. Sonny has his ferocity. Fredo has his tenderness. Michael has his cold calculation. To think how different this film would've been had the studio gotten its way after Coppola fought to make the movie as the book was written, and not as a B gangster picture set in modern day (70's) St. Louis. WTF!!! The studio wanted Burt Reynolds for Sonny, and Robert Redford!!! for Michael. People don't understand that Pacino and Caan were nobodies who got made by this film. The studio was terrified of having an A film be populated by unknown actors. But, again Coppola fought for the actors he wanted, and won. Paramount Chairman Charlie Bluhdorn contemptuously referred to Al Pacino as 'that Italian dwarf'. Good God! It was because of that friction that Coppola feared he was going to be fired every day he was working. The original final cut of the film was only a bit over 2 hours and studio head, the legendary Robert Evans saw a film he did not hire Coppola for and would be incomprehensible to us now. He screamed at Coppola and said, "Where's my fucking movie? I WANT TO SMELL THE SPAGHETTI on the screen." Uh, ok. Thank God, Evans had the golden touch. Coppola worked through all the shot film and put together the masterpiece we have been lucky to enjoy for 50 years now. Like Star Wars, and many other films, The Godfather was saved in the post edit.

Dang! Will be out again, going to have to miss the premiere! I want to be there when Sonny gets to the toll booth! For me that's the most intense death scene of all time (although I put Quint getting eaten by the shark in Jaws as a very close second!).....as bloody as it is, it doesn't feel gratuitous (like 99% of bloody scenes in movies). It has to be that way. Both of those scenes (Sonny and Quint) the acting really sells it. (All that said: the scene is also partly an homage to the groundbreaking scene in "Bonnie And Clyde" from 1967.....a movie that is practically the dividing line between the old Hollywood style of movie making, and the modern one with cursing, and more explicit violence and sexuality, etc etc (It sounded like a good idea at that time! lol) See you tonight when I get home, can't wait!

Sorry for being late! I loved this movie from the first time watching it. And I devoured anything I could find about it, learning about how it was made and almost went overboard when too many real mafia wanted to get involved. All the little details that are not obvious, but makes a difference, like the wedding scene at the start was all recorded with all the sounds and the live band actually playing, making all the extras and actors in the background just a bit more believable. Now, I think they had to do *some* sound editing. But it worked fine. When Luca Brasi stumbles on his line in the speech to The Godfather, that wasn't scripted. Lenny Montana (playing Brasi) was just so nervous being near Marlon Brando. I could go on... But I loved Part II even more. Some don't like the way it's told, jumping back and forth in time. But I think it's brilliant. Francis Ford Coppola is really a Godather of his own business, having built a family empire of filmmakers. Actors: His sister Talia Shire (played Connie Corleone), nephews Nicolas Cage and Jason Schwartzman. Screenwriter: His son Roman Coppola. And his daughter Sofia is a great director. She blew me away with Lost in Translation (2003). You asked about best mafia movie. I have to give it to Once Upon a Time in America (1984). Sergio Leone's last and the third in his big trilogy that starts with the best western ever made - Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). The three movies are not continuations of each other, but the trilogy has a common theme of ends of eras and those who cannot change their ways to keep up. Movies full of flawed people.

If you have also seen the second part of the trilogy (maybe also part 3?) I can still recommend you the parody of "The Godfather", namely "Jane Austen's Mafia!" (1998). As I said, the reaction would only be worthwhile after the trilogy or at least the second part of The Godfather, it's similar to Scary Movie, where your reaction only made sense because you watched Scream first, instead of doing it in reverse order like some reactors. As for my favorite of mafia movies, it's one based on true events and where the main character from the true story even got a role in the movie, namely A Bronx Tale (1993), which unfortunately has been relatively rarely reacted to, while by now probably almost everyone knows Goodfellas.

Don Vito Corleone himself is a composite of real-life mobsters Frank Costello, Carlo Gambino, and Joe Profaci. Almost all mob movies including outside the Italian families like the Irish and Black, as well as Jewish mob are represented in other films. From high ranking to low level street soldiers. Some have changed the names but some films are based on real people like Henry Hill in the movie Goodfellas. Or Casino, New Jack city which connect to 90s street mob. American Ganster which shows the beginning of 70s drug trade. Even Latino movies like Blood in Blood out or American Me are based on real gangs and mob connections. I recommend all those movies. Check out Mean Streets it shows low level crew then I would watch Goodfellas that show mid level. The God father were more high end.

It was important to show Sonny losing his temper when he beat Carlo. Prior to that you only heard about the temper. Barzini was counting on this when they set up the hit on him. It was the same with Moe Green, who brought up the fact the Corleone Family no longer had any power and he could get a better deal from Barzini. They never explained why Michael set up the hits on the Cuneo and Stracci Families, so we have to make a guess they secretly sided with Barzini as well.

I hope you watch godfather 2. It doesn’t happen much in sequels, but it’s even better, if that’s possible.

Hello good reaction. I did want to say you sort of got sonny & Tom's relationship wrong. They were like real brothers who just fought all the time but Sonny loved him just as much as his other siblings. In fact as much as sonny was not like his father. The one thing he did have like his father was that everyone loved him including vito. In fact in the book it says Sonny was Vito's favorite son but he also knew deep down in his heart that he wasn't fit to replace him & he hoped he could teach him & he would change which is why he was hard on him.

You're wrong about Terminator being the best sequel ever, The Godfather 2 is an Academy Award masterpiece and many critics say it's better than Godfather one and I definitely agree

There is no such thing as “THE Best Sequel”. It’s all personal choices made by fans. People could debate all day long about which sequel is the best, and it would mean nothing. Everyone has their personal favorites. There is no Right or Wrong choice.

Amazing/Fantastic second reaction video to this masterpiece of a mob film. Sonny’s death at 10:19 is still shocking even to this day. Lol like what you said at 27:08 that was great also 💯 agree with you on the hypocrisy 27:46

Richie from the Sopranos was a domestic abuser. He gave Chris his permission to hit Adrianna, as long as he married her. Also, he punched Janice in the face. It wasn't a slap. That is a domestic abuser. He would've been capable of much worse.

I am definitely Team Sonny. I think that Sonny was flawed BUT Tom was a weak wartime Consigloiori and let down Sonny. After the Don was hit who but Tom could have stepped up. Tessio and Clemenza could not have, they would have split the family in half and made two individual families for the, Fredo was weak, Tom was a not Italian and unable to even negotiate the times in war, Connie was a female and had no clue and Michael was not ready to commit. Sonny had the respect of the Caporegimes (which Michael did not have) and though he was flawed and had no mind for the long-term strategies and such that Vito and Michael had, he was cunning and ruthless. He was limited but punched above his weight and took on the role and kept the family afloat. His venting against Tom and others was just him being hotheaded and passionate. He loved his brothers and family but Tom WAS letting him down. He needed support and help. He needed Michael and needed Vito but until he had that he did a pretty good job. By the time he died, a very ill Vito was able to prematurely take back over and again could placehold for Michael. The family survived because of the very necessary stakeholders. Each of these stages was suboptimal but hardly terrible. Sonny was a good don. A Very good Don. Not Great or brilliant as Michael or Vito may have been best described.

Is it messed up that, of all the things Michael did in this film, the thing I find most inexcusable is when he lied to his wife at the end?

Fantastic second half, wow. NOBODY likes Carlo, and I relish every reaction to his beat-down. Which is why I have to say you had THE best reaction to that scene......and you have MANY competitors! I just watched a great reaction to that scene yesterday, in another reaction, in fact! Your analysis of Sonny was excellent, you pointed stuff I never thought of (when you remembered the crashed car that Kay asks about, for instance!). All I can say is I can't WAIT for you to see the second one! They made it right after this one, so it's seamless, it's the same exact look, tone, and standard of excellence (all things that the lame third one, made fifteen years later as a studio cash-in, doesn't have!). Your analogy to Succession is not wrong! Totally see it, in a variety of ways! Man oh man, I just cannot wait for you to see the second one. It's more than just a sequel! You'll see! :D

Ritchie didn’t just slap Janice a little and even that shouldn’t be tolerated people should not put their hand on any one in any kind of form not a little not a lot Richie down right punched Janice in the nose for defending his son because on top of being the piece of crap he was a homophobe and couldn’t even accept the thought of his son being gay I don’t defend domestic abusers and calling it a little slap is normalizing and defending that kind of toxic behavior….with that being said love your reactions keep up the great work.

Wife or not, you don't admit that to anyone... you wouldn't even talk about it after the fact with your own people who were involved. So much so that even if one of them wanted to discuss what happened you would have to assume they are wearing a wire. What's done is done, and you ask no questions. In my opinion anyone who does admit to such things (especially in their life as it is portrayed in this movie) either wants to be caught, is a psycho, or needs the recognition, none of which makes a good leader... which is why Michael makes such a seamless transition.
