The Student visa (subclass 500) grants permission to stay in Australia for up to 5 years for the purpose of engaging in full-time study at an educational institution, in accordance with your enrollment.
With this visa, you are eligible to:
Participate in an approved course of study
Include your family members in your application (spouse or you and your spouse's dependent child)
Apply online from within or outside Australia
Work up to 48 hours every 2-week period once your course commences. Master by research and Ph.D. students have the option to work full-time. During school holidays, all students can work full time.

Elevated English Proficiency Standards
The baseline English proficiency requirement for the Student visa has been raised from an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 5.5 to 6.0 (or its equivalent).
Additionally, for students pursuing an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) prior to their primary course of study, the minimum IELTS score has been increased from 4.5 to 5.0 (or its equivalent).
Furthermore, students enrolled in university foundation or pathway programs offering accredited English language training must achieve a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 (or its equivalent). These authorized programs are listed on the Department of Home Affairs website.
However, there are no alterations to the English proficiency requirements for students exclusively studying English through ELICOS, full-time school students, secondary exchange students, or postgraduate research students.
2. Revision of Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Requirement
The updated Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement substitutes the previous 300-word statement with a series of targeted inquiries. These questions encompass:
- Your current situation, including connections to family, community, employment, and economic circumstances.
- The reasons behind your course selection and your decision to pursue studies in Australia.
- How you anticipate benefiting from undertaking your chosen course.
- Any prior study experiences in Australia, if applicable.
- If you hold a visa other than a Student visa, justification for seeking a Student visa.
- Any additional pertinent information you wish to provide.
Who can get the Student visa 500?
- You need to be at least 6 years old.
- You must show you're enrolled in a full-time course listed on CRICOS.
- You should prove your English skills, which depends on where you're from and what course you're taking.
- You and your family need health insurance from an approved Australian provider.
- You have to show you truly plan to study in Australia.
- If you're under 18, you need to have plans for your welfare while you're here.
- Lastly, you must meet health and character standards.
