DIY Garden Room - the garden room is 7.2x4.5m (externally), with a 2"x5" frame, 120mm PIR insulation, warm roof construction with Shou Sugi Ban larch cladding. We use it as a home office, gym and tv cinema room. Built 75% by Karen and 25% help from her husband.
This episode covers setting out post holes, building the retaining wall from 2x8 C4 treated wood rather than sleepers and preparation of the site before installing the base panels.

Sorry about the music. KZbin didn't like what I had used, so had to slot in some KZbin own music. Especially sorry about 3:45 as I wanted to keep the original sound!
BACKGROUND - During the first UK 2020 lockdown I decided to build my family a garden room. The teens had nowhere to hang out away from us parents and my husband was working from home indefinitely and needed office space. We have the space in the garden (even if it is sloped) - so why not build a multifunctional room! I had time on my hands (covid scuppered my business) and had talked about building one for years - now was my opportunity! I learnt tonnes along the way having only tackled fences, shed bases and wood stores before this. Subscribe to see the last in the series when I highlight all the key learning points and tips for building a garden room.

Hi Clive, thanks for watching. When I built this the C4 treated timber was cheaper than sleepers, but prices seem to have rocketed lately! Might be cheape nowr to do them out of sleepers, but the same process applies. I'm about to start a second retaining wall down the bottom of the garden and may have to resort to the heavier sleepers... Thanks again. Karen

Thanks for watching Rodney. Why does preparation take so long?! Can't wait to get the actual build videos up. Karen

How long was your retaining wall again Rodney? 20m? So this one at 4.8m in length and 700mm high cost around £130ish. Might work out cheaper and less invasive than the gabions (ie. more garden less wall)? Karen

Nice job! I needed this guide for my backyard project :) Did you staple the DPM barrier to the wood and also tuck under the lower wood?

Great content. Did you consider a small field drain? I am guessing the 1cm gap refers to the base of the horzonatal boards to allow the water to drain underneath and continue down the hill under your garden room?
@OurHomeProjects
@OurHomeProjects Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. Yes, exactly that, so pressure doesn’t build up behind the wall 👍

@@OurHomeProjects thanks for your reply. so you didnt bother with a field drain? I have a similar situation to you for about a 6 metre length and Im hoping a field drain is overkill for such a short length. The height is about 800mm.

Our soil is *very stony and I put all the pebbles behind the wall before topping with top soil. So I guess you could say that also helps with the drainage and lack of pressure build up. I am not an expert but I’m sure if you back filled that length with 4” or so of gravel that would help, plus if you can allow a gap at the bottom that will also help, or have a small trench in front of the wall also filled with gravel to act as a small soak away for anything that comes out underneath. Did you let the cement dry before screwing the walls to the post?
@OurHomeProjects
@OurHomeProjects 3 ай бұрын
Yes, this was postcrete so fast drying. I did the cementing near the end of the day and secured the boards the following day 👍

post should be 50% in 50%out

Yeh, I would agree with that if it were possible. Unfortunately, our soil is full of flint, pebbles and clay, so I could only dig so far. It was a short wall and the fact the surrounding 'soil' around the posts was rock solid I decided they would be ok. Thanks for watching.
