Thanks Zach. I bought a pony last month, she's pulling the cart and good in traffic, but she does not like stopping and starting, she's anxious. I'll do a bit of groundwork like that, I'm sure it will help, there's no room for error on our suburban English roads, there's always traffic and parked cars

Patience is a virtue. Know days people want everything now. If you take your time and do it right the first time, them you don't have to do it over and over. If you haven't owned mules you cant understand how them learning bad behaviors can be down right dangerous. And then they get passed around and around until they end up in Mexico at a kill facility. So you need to fix it and make them solid so they have permanent loving homes. I have used all you have done here over the last 50 yrs on horses , mules and donkeys and I am in California. You need to be firm but fair and you only need to be as "harsh" or "creative" as you need to or as the bad behavior dictates. And never hold a grudge and use every interaction as a training possibility. Mules and donkeys learn better in short sessions not hour after hour like some horses need. Zach , when I had cattle I had 1 cow that was my lead cow. Calm I call her in. My next oldest cow picked it up. I was working with my lead cow's last heifer calf , she was a little harder to train. Sure makes it easy to move cattle. Bill

I use the turn quick and scare them technique, keeps them from walking on top of me. I learn from everyone. Either I learn what to do or I learn what not to do. Bought a horse for 50 dollars that was so rank he would try to cow kick whenever the owner got close enough. His wife got her arm broken. He told me he would pray every day for the Lord to calm the horse. I told him I believe the Lord helps them that helps their selves. He was my greatest challenge, but was in the end a wonderful horse. Keep doing what you're doing oh so well.

I have a horse like that who "creeps" towards me if given the proverbial "inch". I ended up using a dressage/buggy whip length stick against his chest to show him the distance to keep away from me. If he crept/stepped towards me, he poked himself in the chest. Then hand signals combined with that meant, in the end, I could wean him off the stick. I still have to be vigilant, though. I note that June is testing you constantly with moving one front leg and seeing if you react. I laughed earlier when you were talking about you being a team and talking to each other; just as she was telling you she had a horse fly biting her, but you were so busy with the camera, you did not "hear" (see) her!! Thanks for this. People I know call me by my initials, MR.

Yes, if you give them an inch, they will take them out. And you have to remember that as you are training a mule. And a horse really is no different… A mule just requires a little more attention to detail. In my humble opinion. I hope it works for you! When you're working on leading with the stud chain, how do you handle a mule that won't walk forward, it just plants it's feet?

That is a good question! OK, so what I do… Is I apply steady pressure with the stud chain. And I keep that pressure until the very moment the mule attempts to move forward even the least little bit and then I release. Remember, they learn from the release of pressure and not pressure itself. They have to learn to give in to pressure. Such as leading. And they will learn that if you use pressure and release! Apply some pressure until the mule attempts to step forward and then be quick to release. Reward even the slightest bit of try. And build from there does that make sense? No absolutely not because of flies. She’s been this way ever since she was born. Nervy, explosive, disrespectful, and sometimes just mean. She got it from her momma. We just didn’t know she was like that until after we bred her. Her mother was a Belgian draft mare and her dad was an American mammoth donkey. She’s doing a whole lot better now, but still has her moments. The harness training will refocus her attention other places and a big change will take place I am sure of it. I’ve broke a bunch of em just like her. You just have to be smarter than they are if you’re gonna really break em and break em right.
