You won't give up on Woody. You know the rain will slow down. Besides that, I'm sure he preens his feathers regularly that way they don't get waterlocked. That's why his feathers just simply don't look wet. They looks dry and shiny! He made the decision to stand on a tree so that he doesn't have to flap his wings, because EVERY time he does it, he's has to rouse his feathers and take the time to preen them again. Its hard enough just to fly to your glove, let alone everything else he does to keep himself dry. It was cool seeing Woody standing on the ground! You should have made him run to your fist. If you would have just lowered it about halfway, maybe he would had ran instead of flying. I know running sure takes more effort than flying depending on how far he's running. He won't run halfway across the field, but maybe quarter-way could be doable. The hooding went as planned. It became a routine once Woody understood its purpose. However, I did like seeing him spreading his wings out, and I don't see the point in using the hood in that situation. That doesn't count as "bating". If anything, if Woody spreads his wings, that should help him stretch his wing muscles. But there are times when Woody could bate excessively, but Golden Eagles or Falcons would bate way more often than a Harris Hawk would. Bating too often could be a potential problem where they could brake some of their tail or wing feathers. How many times have I seen a hawk take food away? TOO many!!!! Just imagine if you never used anklets or jesses on Woody! It would be nearly impossible to train him to eat on the glove! Very few wild hawks will eat from the hand without proper training. And to do that, the hawk would have to do it from a VERY young age, maybe before they are old enough to fledge from the nest.
@freebirdofreason1994Ай бұрын
Thanks Jeremy, I’m glad you enjoyed it, your right about the anklets and Jesses it would be difficult to achieve the same goal. I hope you are getting on ok. Take care.

I've ordered both GPS and regular telemetry, GPS will be for pest control work as I'll be flying in an urban environment and regular telemetry won't exactly cut it there. I'll have the regular telemetry for hunting, maybe as a backup if/when GPS fails. It's a real investment but because my bird is going to be earning my bacon hopefully it'll pay itself back! Always a thrill to see Woody hunting, being out in nature is so healing.
@freebirdofreason1994Ай бұрын
I’m sure the gps will serve you well out with working hawks, great bit of kit especially in urban areas. It’s a matter of time before a none falconry gps arrives smaller enough to use, falconry equipment has a higher price tag. Good luck with your hunting season and work based falconry. Thanks for watching and commenting again 👍

Another great video 😊 You mention Jackdaws and Crow's. I love Corvids. Has Woody ever come into contact with any Magpies? I have really busy feeders in my garden, so they do attract Sparrowhawks. I've seen the Magpies go and pull the Sparrowhawks tail or sit beside them while they eat their dinner. They are 1 of a kind 😊😂 Woody is looking fantastic as always. x

Hi Pete, like you I would like a gps system , but I am amazed how many birds are still lost whilst using them. I’m a bit old school with telemetry as I think gps would be tempting to fly your birds a a too high weight. Brilliant video as usual.

Great video. Do you think woody saw the pheasant on the chalk pile from where he was perched and made his move, or just saw it as he was soaring over and then dropped on it?
@freebirdofreason19942 ай бұрын
Well I have re looked it was possibly seen from the tree , although I think the flight would have been more determined from the off, maybe was on the way across as he does keep an eye out in flight , heading for where the dog was working. Thanks good point.

How much $ is a new Marshall GPS system, Pete?🤔
@freebirdofreason19942 ай бұрын
About £1300 crazy money Marshall turbo, I’m sure that none falconry would be cheaper. Unfortunately when it’s falconry it has high prices. The good thing is all movement hight and speed is also recorded.
