So glad there are at least a few Bible Review channels whose content is not limited to our most current popular Bible editions. This was an outstanding 7 minute presentation of such "a fascinating piece of Bible history". Loved it!

Little info on Latin here. The verbs in Latin don’t have gender, for example: Laudo- I pray Laudas- you (singular) pray. Laudat- He / She / It prays. So, in Latin, the gender of the person doing the crushing is ambiguous and determined by context. So, the verb may refer to the seed or the woman, and it’s hard to tell which was intended. Nevertheless, the Latin Church has always held that it refers to the Virgin Mary. I don’t see this as a theological problem because no matter how you want to slice it, both Christ and the Virgin are in view here. The Parallel passage is Revelation 12.

Agree …Christ and Virgin Mary work together…her “Yes” to God when Christ mission to take on human flesh as a second nature along with his divinity nature.

@@DM-88 Of course. In America it was applied to black people, the idea that Ham was cursed by God and that black people inherited that curse being made by God to be servants of Shem and Japheth. I don’t know how Haydock interprets that text though.

Hi Tim!! Great review! This looks like an incredible version of the Douay Rheims Bible. I love all those beautiful illustrations and the commentaries. I wish there was a less expensive edition in leathersoft. I would buy it. I’m Catholic so this really is impressive. God bless you!

It’s very difficult to see $130 in this bible, but to my knowledge, other than finding an antique this is the only true option.

I can’t believe that we don’t have more bibles utilizing commentary from Church Fathers like the Haydock. From an apologetic standpoint this almost seems like a predecessor to the Didache Bible.

Holman has an Ancient Faith Study Bible that checks some of the boxes. Also SVS Press has some editions with the patristic commentary.

The Didachē is not a bible. The 70 AD Didachē written in Koine Greek (language of the NT and the Septuagint OT) is per se, the first Catechism of the Catholic Church. It means "The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles". The Didachē is included in the writings of the early Church Fathers. Edit: I saw that there is a "study" bible, and called the Didache Bible. Personally, it should have been called by another name since it can be confused with the actual ancient c. 70 AD Didachē writings/teachings of the Apostles

Great review again Tim. So glad you are reviewing these great catholic translations. The Douay Rheims is the one that I think is most important to look at. Just because of when it was made and the period that the Latin Vulgate was done. This Haydock is one that I’ve always kind of pondered for the notes but now I’m sold. Definitely a must have for the notes alone. Only question I have is about the notes in yours being more extensive than the one that is available now. If I wanted the same one you have with all the notes included what should I look for?

Thank you for your presentation of the Haydock bible! I am inspired to go and purchase this wonderful bible. Here is the Septuagint Greek of Genesis 3:15 (the Koine Greek Septuagint is the Scriptures that Jesus, His Apostles and all Hellenistic Jews used and quoted from). Gen 3:15 καὶ ἔχθραν θήσω ἀνὰ μέσον σου καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τῆς γυναικὸς καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ σπέρματός σου καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ σπέρματος αὐτῆς αὐτός σου τηρήσει κεφαλήν καὶ σὺ τηρήσεις αὐτοῦ πτέρναν And using the translator from Greek to English is: Gen 3:15 and I will put enmity between you and between the woman and between your seed and between her seed, he shall respect your head and you shall respect his heel The original Greek *αὐτῆς* is "her". St. Jerome had the originals, and translated correctly. None of authors of "modern" eras had the originals as they were gone by then. The Jewish Scribes whom wrote the Masoretic Text did not either, and they rendered an altered and redacted version, discarding books, chapters and verses and changing words (their Hebrew Bible) begun 7th century AD and completed 10th century AD.

P.S. The same is found with the word "virgin". The Masoretic Text (Jewish Scribes) changed the word in Isaiah 7:14 from "virgin" to "young woman". Septuagint Greek of Isaiah 7:14 (Jesus, God Incarnate, used and quoted from the Koine Greek Septuagint). διὰ τοῦτο δώσει κύριος αὐτὸς ὑμῖν σημεῖον ἰδοὺ ἡ παρθένος ἐν γαστρὶ ἕξει καὶ τέξεται υἱόν καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Εμμανουηλ Translated with online translator from Greek to English is: Is 7:14 therefore may the Lord give you a sign: behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and you shall call his name Immanuel The Greek *παρθένος* is "virgin". As further evidence we have St. Matthew in his Gospel also using the word "virgin" (Matt 1:23) when he quoted Isaiah 7:14. Matthew 1:23 ἰδοὺ ἡ *παρθένος* ἐν γαστρὶ ἕξει καὶ τέξεται υἱόν καὶ καλέσουσιν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἐμμανουήλ ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον μεθ᾽ ἡμῶν ὁ θεός Direct translation: MATT 1:23 Behold, the *virgin* conceived and gave birth to a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel, who is God interpreting with us Latin Vulgate *Isaiah 7:14* propter hoc dabit Dominus ipse vobis signum ecce *virgo* concipiet et pariet filium et vocabitis nomen eius Emmanuhel Direct translation into English for this reason the Lord himself will give you a sign, behold, a *virgin* will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will call his name Emmanuel MATT 1:23 (Latin Vulgate) ecce virgo in utero habebit et pariet filium et vocabunt nomen eius Emmanuhel quod est interpretatum Nobiscum Deus And direct translation into English Matt 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which is translated, God with us So we clearly see no doubt the word is and always was *virgin*

In the Protoevengelium, Catholicism hold true either translation: if Mary crushes the head of the serpent, it is through her Son of course--that is, indirectly. If it is He who crushes, He does it directly. Credit to Mary is never discredit to Her loving Divine Son.
