Keith Meals is a veteran fish biologist with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. He helps manages the world renowned crappie lakes in North Mississippi (Arkabutla, Sardis, Enid, and Grenada). In this video, he explains how Livescoping has sparked the interest of the younger generation to go fishing. Meals also dispels myths about Livescope and the impact it has on consumptive fish reproduction like crappie now and in the future.

To the scoopers out there when you make the blanket statement that you’re not hurting fish, but you’re catching fish out of any word from 20to 40 feet of water you’re crazy if you don’t think there’s some damage going on there cause I guarantee you that a majority of scoopers that are catching fish at a deep water are not checking bass to make sure they don’t need vented and that’s a fact, and I bet you a majority of scoopers would not even know how to vent a fish so don’t try to sell us that you’re not hurting the fish

For bass fishing, does the increase in fishing pressure by virtue of live scope have negative consequences for the health of fish populations, not to mention the impact it has on those not using live scope?
@futtmill
@futtmill Ай бұрын
I believe livescope has an impact on crappie populations but I think we overstate it. If you think about the evolution of crappie fishing: single pole with a minnow, to spider rigging, to now livescope. The sport of crappie fishing has grown from people in a Jon boat that want a good meal to people that do it money. There are more plastic jigs and hair jigs on the market now to trick a crappie into biting than ever before. Quieter and stronger trolling motors with gps and spot lock, brakes on your boat, and the list goes on and on! Not to mention that environmental conditions play a major role in crappie populations! Every lake has it ebbs and flows in fish populations due to environmental conditions that we don’t control. So now because the market is so strong for crappie fishing (how many jig pole and plastic jig companies have popped up over the past 10-15 years?), on top of environmental conditions, and better technology like livescope we are seeing what we see now. I personally believe charters and tournaments should be limited if you are going to reduce the number and size of fish regular people keep.

My feelings exactly. Especially in regards to College Football (really College sports in general) and fishing. The pro to FFS is it's getting younger anglers involved? So you have to pamper these kids to get them to fish, even though you just stated negative effects it's having on the fisheries. This is what it's all about folks, keep people buying fishing licenses, or whatever rolls the money in...
@lightfeather9953
@lightfeather9953 Ай бұрын
The fisheries are already managed and stocked in a lot of cases. Unless you think you deserve to have a public resource all to yourself, it's generally good to have more people getting in to fishing. Would you rather the sport be in big decline and have no management money? If you think fishing pressure is inherently bad then why don't you want to ban fishing all together? Or make much stricter restrictions on when and how to fish?
@arngreencare8955
@arngreencare8955 Ай бұрын
You don't make any sense. And no, there's alot of fisheries that are not stocked. You think we have the resources to stock lake Okeechobee? That's laughable to even try it. If younger anglers want to play a video game, it's easier and cheaper to do it from your couch rather than the bow of an 80,000 dollar bass boat. And listen to what was said here, FFS is putting more pressure on the fisheries. And if FFS is needed for a person to catch fish, that alone says something about that person's skill set and mentality...

Also, I forgot to mention on my first comment that a real life example that shows we can’t blame livescope for everything is Bee Lake in Mississippi. Bee used to be a fantastic crappie lake. You could catch a limit in the spring with your eyes closed. But that started to change after a bad flood in 2011. For several years after the flood, the crappie fishing was poor and this was before people were using livescope (livescope didn’t hit the market until like 2015 or 2016 and it didn’t really take off until a few years after that with more and more people using it). The flood allowed Asian carp to invade the lake and the state stocked alligator gar in the lake to control the carp so people started blaming the flood, carp, and gar for the poor crappie fishing. So this is what I meant under my first comment when I said environmental conditions can have a drastic impact on crappie populations. Floods, droughts, etc all play a role. It’s not as simple as blaming new technology like livescope all the time. Bee Lake has slowly started to make a comeback over the past two or three years (even though more people are using livescope now). Some of it is due to decent spawns and the state stocking the lake a few times since the flood.

Somewhat like trail cameras used to target the biggest bucks on a property. Live scope allows targeting the biggest fish in a school and when they get spooked off a spot you can follow them. If a lake is fertile and has an excellent food source for the species of interest, then livescope likely not a factor. But a declining lake's lunker population would suffer from live scope unless catch and release over a certain size.

As a fisheries biologist why are you not changing the limit that can be harvested, no matter how they are being caught, so that the fisheries are stabilized. Isn't that what you were doing before forward facing sonar? You set the limit based on what the fisheries can handle. Why are you not doing that now? If the fishery went the other direction and the numbers of fish available were drastically larger than could be harvested, would you not increase the limits? It sounds to me as if you are not responding to the fishery in a timely manner. What you talked about here is over many years (since 2018) yet you let the fishery be diminished to the degree you are talking about here.
