PART 2: MODULAR HOGWIRE PANEL FENCE with DADO GROOVE 18 MONTH REVIEW & STAIN TUTORIAL

Welcome back to the channel! It's "Honey-Do" season! It has also been about 18 months since completion of the modular fence and now its time to stain. Since the uploading of Part 1 it has become quite popular and generated many likes, questions, and concerns. For this fence we used the Pecan stain. The finish looks very much like a pecan shell. For 207 feet of this fence design I guesstimated 7 gallons for a single application, and we only used 6 gallons, leaving a gallon extra to do touch ups if necessary.

Great idea on your modular fence building method. I used this method to build panels to close in a metal carport (the kind you can purchase) that we converted to a goat barn. It worked and looks great! Thank you for the videos.

You and one other person I’ve seen that actually build it the correct way using dados and I loved it from the moment I found your video! I especially love your Aussie!!! If it’s hard to see I have a pic with me and my mini Aussie “Tula” and I have my standard Aussie “Granger”! They both are diggers, rambunctious and need jobs to keep them active and out of trouble but their intelligence just blows my mind how smart these cuties are! If you ever need to regime you’re Aussie I’d love to have her!!! And btw, I have a regular, vertical slatted, stupid fence that Granger has shook out of alignment, shaken the posts loose so I can tell this fence is sturdy and will do the job! Mine is old, so it’s not all of my dogs’ fault but they are stronger than they appear and if your fence is doing well since building it, it’ll do great for years to come! The only change I’d personally make because my two dig is instead of inserting the posts in the ground, I’d do a thin but strong underground wall of concrete, add post supports while fresh concrete in order to protect the posts from rotting over time and keep my Aussies from digging out of the fence but that’s it

Yes our Aussie (Nigel) is a handful.. super intelligent, and alway on patrol.. but sometimes his intelligence becomes clouded by his genetic wiring to herd/protect and can trigger him to be defensive/aggressive.. he’s hasn’t bit anyone, but it’s a fear of ours because we know how he reacts towards other dogs.. he’s loved affection and attention but can’t stand an outsider dog or person.. over time naturally he warms up to them, but could be triggered at any time. Thankfully neither of my dogs are diggers.. I would do a tactic similar to what you’ve suggested it digging we’re an issue. I was so happy and immediately sent that one to my husband. He was so inspired. Then we had our second baby. Project put on hold. Thanks for the video I have two young labs, an older lab, and our fire alarm chihuahua we live on 4 acres it’s been exhausting chasing them everyday and was not keen on getting shock collars. Thanks! I was just at tractor supply this week and they are in abundance.. you may also find them at a livestock supply store or Lowe’s/Home Depot. you don’t have to use the 4x4 mesh like I did. You can opt for the 6x8 mesh as well. It will be slightly different dimensions than my construction info, but the same end result.. I’ve use both types.. send an email to [e-mail] and I will send over construction information and reference photos of other viewers projects.

@@darlashumate7498 its absolutely do-able, just takes a bit or research to find something that will adhere to the metal properly. You could probably go one up and do a rubberized coating like flex seal or roll on herculiner.

@@GatorOverland I am building a 124 feet long by 60 foot wide (for a garden area with three gates, one on each side) but on one of the 124' long sides I'm doing a horizontal fence (adjacent to a forest area/neighbor that I want privacy). I also am building (well, have built) a dog pen in the corner of it at 24x24. I had also purchased all the lumber to sandwich them together but was planning on 6' foot centers (bought 12' lumber because it was cheaper) so had to go with 6' centers. I have a long ways to go.....

My neighbors spent a fortune on a vinyl barricade fence around three fourth's of their acre and a half of their property. It wasn't even up one year and we had high winds one day and the winds blew out so many of the panels in between the posts. There were panels blown into my property and the neighbors. Recently it happened again but not as many panels. The panels weren't reinstalled for well over a year. My guess is that the fence contractors didn't insure the fence for destruction by mother nature. I don't know why they did that as they had a wooden fence and metal fencing material where the air could flow through for years and never had a problem. After seeing what has happened to their fencing I will never buy a vinyl barricade style fence installed on my property. I like your style of fence so the air can flow through.

Just giving advice from some one thats in the fencing business those top gate hinges the Male hinge, you should have those pointing down instead of up it prevents some one from taking the gates off looks really good

Thanks for the reply. Your exactly right about the hinges. It may sound odd, but I intentionally have them both up so that I can remove the gate. It also acts as a double support of the weight as opposed to the bottom supporting the weight and the top one just maintaining position of the hinge were the other way. If I was worried about them being stolen, I would most definitely have it the other way.

I built someting similar but I did not use the datto. I cut the perimeter wire off and just drilled holes in the frame for the protruding rods. This also created the weep holes you later drilled.

I’m looking to do something very similar of your design. I reckon I’ll be using snake fence wire. It’s 1/8 of an inch squares. I’ll set it in the ground 12 -18 in ground with 8 feet high. On the outside of fence at the bottom, 12 to 18 inch’s of crush - broken shards of glass. I got bears in our area too. Nothing should be able to get into yard. In Japan they burn wood to a good char and the claims are mold - bug proofing and weather proofing. It’s called SHOU SUGI BAN JAPANESE WOOD BURNING.

@Andy Nguyen Good deal! Then youre all set. If you use a 2X rot/mud board as I did at the base, then you can probably get away with doing the full 12ft span without separating in the middle or worrying about bowing over time. The mud/rot board works as a strongback brace for the fence. But it's totally up to you. Many have asked if they can do the full 16' with my design, and i would not recommend that distance without supporting in middle, which is why i did 93.5". Good luck with the build. How about an update at 32 months? My biggest fear in this style is the top 2x4s sagging over time. No criticism from me whatsoever, other than the choice of hat. Great build, great content, and Roll Tide.

That’s hilarious!!! Yes, it will be 3 years next month, looks as good as new and holding up great. No warping, Bowing, or splitting.. my design is nearly impossible to sag, the metal fencing would have to bend too. The bottom 2x6 mud board is the back bone preventing sag and it’s supported vertically between the 4x4s.. the only room for failure is age/weathering at this point.. reach out via one of my contacts and I can send current photo or video and answer any inquiries you may have. I like the fence. I built one similar to yours. How is yours holding up after 3 years? In the midwest freeze/thaw is a concern with the lower exposed dado cut filling with water or slush and then freezing and weakening the lower 2x4. Adding the weep hole as you have is a good idea or doing an overlay with an exterior silicone caulk also helps (but it does add cost). We painted our panels black that gives them the appearance of almost disappearing from a distance. Just depends on which look you are going for. I like the caps you put on the fence posts and will be adding those to ours. Thanks for the video.

I actually built the fence about six years ago and it’s holding up great despite what other folks have said about cutting dado grooves into the wood… I live in Southeast Texas, and we’re subject to harsh heat and humidity and periodically we have freezing cold snaps, but not often enough to matter.. We had considered painting our panels black at one time, but surprisingly the galvanizing is holding up well . Are you using a mud/rot board along the bottom of your fence? Not only does this protect against ground water splashing, but it adds additional support to the panel frame.

@@GatorOverland I use a 2x6 treated board upright as support for the lower part of the panel section. I think this is what you are referencing as a mud/rot board. It does provide support to the panel section keeping the lower 2x4 from sagging and also keeps the line trimmer from hitting the fence panel. You do have to drill the weep holes in the lower dado at an extreme angle to miss the support board if you don't use a caulk. The weep holes kept getting clogged and had to be re-drilled annually to make sure they were still open. The aesthetics of this type of fence are much, much better than the term "hog wire" or "livestock panel" suggests. I have started to referring to it as just panel fencing. City people don't know the difference and rural people know what you are talking about.

Would love your opinion on doing this fence higher? considering this style of fence for a chicken run but want to go somewhere around 7 feet. also would use the smaller mesh size, 2 inch openings, which may offer more internal strength. Just concerned with flexibility at the centre between posts? How flexible is it currently?

i utilized a 6" wide rot board at the bottom of my panel frame to provided added strength and increase the height of the fence 6", and the majority of the way around the yard im at about 5'-6". if you watched my part 1 video you saw me actually trim down the fence panel to about 48" from 60". You could achieve near 7ft by leaving the wire at 60" and using a 12" wide rot board at the base. I built my fence on a budget to achieve the most height and width with as minimal extra cost or waste possible, and that why i trimmed to the height i did. Each panel is (3) 8ft 2x4's which amounts to $12'ish.. the $60, 16ftx5ft wire panel was cut in half and trimmed, so each completed panel frame amounted to about $42'ish... you would just have to change your measurements from mine and buy some 10ft 2x4's to work with the increased height of the panel. All should still work out nicely. If you havent seen in the descreption, i have a link to my drop box for construction info and or my email if you need to contact me personally. He’d make big belly flop if he did try, that’s for sure. I think he likes his side of the fence better anyway.

This question has come up quite a few times over the past year… it is definitely an idea of a way to cut down on cost and will work… but....You have to make damn sure your post are exactly where you want them to be when they are set…Especially if you had cut the wire panel lengths and horizontal topper/bottom wood lengths before you set the post…There would be no forgiveness if you set the post a little bit too far apart… The panel would not set in the groove properly and the wood lengths would be too short. If you are not relying on the fence for strength then I would expect it to be fine for fencing in a pool area… Depending on how many feet you are trying to do for this, you are only saving yourself the cost of one 2x4 (about four or five dollars) per panel section to do it this way. I.e. If you needed to make 20 sections this would be about $80-$100 saved from if you did my design. Feel free to ask any questions

I cannot get this to work with a pump sprayer. I purchased 3 sprayers and the liquid is too thick for all of them. Not sure how you did this but I can’t get it to work

I’m sorry you’ve had that issue… I’ve done multiple fences with the sprayer without any issues… are you using ready seal? Not sure if it gets more viscous in colder temperatures, but it was like water for me… I did my sprays in 70 to 90° weather…

Yes you can… This was my initial design but it required twice as much wood and would be a lot more weight… You do not need a router, just a tablesaw with a dado blade stacked for 3/8” groove… I made a post on my Facebook and had a table saw and post hole digger to borrow by that afternoon..

Can you stain the wood before making the fence? I guess you'd waste some stain that way, but seems like it would be easy to stain the wood while it's flat on the ground.

It depends on what kind of wood you’re using… If you’re using treated wood, unless you wait until the wood is cures (dries) before building the fence, the answer is No (could take 6mos to a year+ depending on climate)… if you stain treated wood before it’s cured (dried out) it will not be accepting I’d the stain and bead off. If you’re using untreated wood, then you’re good to stain before construction.

I used a sawzall.. if you have a circular saw that goes deep enough you are able to use that as well by cutting around all the sides, and sometimes taking a mallet to knock it off..

Thanks for the reply! There are a few instances where surface rust is present at the weld points which isn't uncommon for this type of material. Currently it it not enough to compromise the integrity of the weld. It's nothing a wire brush and some cold galv spray cant fix. Im still very happy with the way its holding up.

Is it possible to do the dado cuts with a circular saw? I think this method is what I will be using for my garden. We have a 1.3 acre lot I'd love to create a good size garden in and I think this method would be best to keep away rabbit, deer, moose and bears. Thanks!

I have read that dadoes are capable of being cut with a circular saw, but doing that amount of fencing perimeter I would definitely recommend renting or borrowing a tablesaw so you can use the benefit of a rip fence to keep you’re cuts straight. Once built it will definitely deter the pests from your garden!

Joanna, I’ve seen some of these where people have “sandwiched” the hog wire between two one inch thick boards and put screws through to hold it together. A dado on a long straight 8 foot run with a circular saw wouldn’t be my first thought, but maybe with the right set up, it could work. I just cut grooves in for about 160 feet of this type fence with a table saw. You’d need to be very careful with a circular for safety.

@@scottbrown8418 my first design of this fence was the sandwich method you speak of. It does work, but its very labor intensive and uses alot of material. I actually put together a jig to keep things square. After about the 3rd panel and 60 screws later i simplified the design to the dado groove and didn't look back. Joanna, i would definitely recommend renting/borrowing a table saw with are rip fence to make the process go by quickly and safely. Good luck with you build. let me know if you have any questions.
