I always thought, perhaps, that part of it too was something of John's aura. Like when he's getting ready to do his 'work', he can sort of affect the people around him. Maybe in this case, he also made Hal more subdued than he would have been otherwise.
@83gemm2 жыл бұрын
In the book they all sense something malevolent when they arrive. “Hear me. I’m not saying Melly Moores was possessed, but I have never entirely discounted the idea either.” They can’t think straight and Paul is full of horror at what they are doing, feeling like he’s thrown his whole career away for a crazy idea that John can help. Then when John approaches, they feel the power in him and they all sort of go along with it. It’s very much good vs. evil in that scene. Melly’s voice even sounds afraid of John’s approach when he comes into the room. The movie is a staggeringly good adaptation, but read the book to make it all fuller and richer.

I'll never forget coming out of the theater speechless for two things I could not get out of my head: 1 - How can they make such a perfect presentation of a novel that was already too perfect? 2 - How can a book that made me cry have an adaptation that drove it home even further? If only every adaptation could even do half what this did with the source material.

The implications are going to be horrifying to many fans. If Paul gets an extra 64 years himself, that could mean that he lives to be like 140, decades past a normal life, and he's already wishing for death at the end of the movie. If John's gift was to make a being live dozens of times as long as they normally do, then Paul could find himself living for a few millenia.

IMO the scars are a hint that JC is very old. Hundreds of years old. Working as a laborer, for that long, the scars would add up. And that explains why he can't remember how he got the scars, because they happened so long ago. Paul and Mr.Jingles only got a taste of JC's power, and a field mouse only lives a couple years. If you assume Mr.Jingles dies at the end of TGM and you do the math, 30x lifespan extension, translated to Paul, means he could live to be 3,000 years old.

@@Sentinel3D Mr. King himself said John Coffey was Jesus Christ. Most people guessed this one correctly, while a few said Angel. I quote King himself here " He represents the new Messiah, someone sent to us two thousand years after by Mighty God". King tells us he was placed into a newly created body. This is the reason for his illiteracy, and looking at things for the very first time. The body Suffers from the Sins of others. Coffey is afraid of the dark, because he has to travel there each time to heal others. By placing him in the dark, he will be alone. This is one of Kings greatest notes. This is also the account of the wardens wife. Her story claims she was in the dark. Coffey found her, then they were together no longer alone. The flies in the movie represent The passage in the bible. "Satan is the lord of flies" Coffey expels the Darkness, the sickness. King would go on, about the passage of Coffey healing the wardens wife. "This was taken from the bible, but reversed" In the bible Jesus Heals the Gerasene Demoniac”, where Jesus exorcises the demons out of the body of a man. Mr. Jingles represents how small humans are in front of God. You would say how can that be? Mr. Jingles was sent to Bring out redemption, and Punishment. To which we got to see in the movie. Eduard Delacroix found his redemption, and suffered no more. While Percy Wetmore found his Judgement and punishment. None of this is my thoughts. These are the notes and a few interviews of the Author "king". I can personally tell you, i figured out he was Jesus off the bat. I knew from bible studies, about the Flies being used in the bible. the rest was new to me :) Either way it's a awesome book. The movie needed more time to allow more of the small stuff in it. Thanks for your time again :)

There's a lot of Christian symbolism in the story. In addition to John Coffey, Hanks's character was named Paul. Before his conversion, Saul (Paul) killed Christians by the authority of the State, just as Paul killed prisoners as an executioner. After he had his epiphany, Paul gave up his past and repented, just as Edgecome gave up his position on death row. Paul also spread the Gospel, just as Edgecome told the story of Coffey. Another interesting bit is Del's horrific execution, all his suffering. His last name was De LaCroix, which is French for "of the cross". There's also some contrast between Del and Coffey. At his execution, Del said "I'm sorry for what I do (did)", Coffey said "I'm sorry for what I am" (because he comitted no crime). Coffey spoke of his ability as "Taking it back". "I tried to take it back, but it was too late" "I just took it back is all". Speaking of his crime, Del said "I wish I could take it back, but I can't."
@captbrownbeard15992 жыл бұрын
Something to think about, if he made both the mouse and Paul live so long, how long had John been walking the earth? He did say that was the way it is all over the world, how does he know? Finally, I am a 46 year old man and I cry every damn time I watch this movie or a reaction to it, don't be afraid to let the tears flow.

John Coffey (JC) showed both the love of God (healing, the ability to feel the pain of others, seeing visions, viewing the heart of Man, taking the suffering on behalf of others), and the Judgment of God (punishment and justice). It was ABSOLUTELY his call to make when he punished Percy and Wild Bill. He even willingly laid down his own life, like Jesus Christ. The difference in this story is that John Coffey did it because he wanted his own pain to go away, not to offer everlasting life to sinners, and he didn't resurrect to defeat death.
@RickLacy-b3x5 ай бұрын
If you look at the percentage of life increase Mr. Jingles has and apply the same percentage to Paul, he could conceivably live more than 1500 years, maybe 2000. Since neither are passed at the end of the story the upper end really could extend even past that.

I must also add that IRL the guy who portrayed Percy(Doug Hutchinson) was a POS. I'm pretty sure most people already know that he started "grooming"(her words) a 15 year old girl when he was 50, and he eventually married her at 16. He's also a POS because he would refer to Michael Jeter(Del) as a "fa**ot" on set. Jeter was openly gay and died of AIDS about 20 years ago. Hutchinson implied that he was blackballed by the industry because of his marriage to a minor. He claims that over the 10 years they were officially married he was only able to land two 1 episode acting gigs on tv shows. Oh yeah, I didn't read Part I, so you may have already mentioned this stuff.

Also, from part 1, the movie takes place in 1935. Penicillin was only discovered in 1928. They weren't able to synthesize it until 1942, and it didn't become available to the public until the late 40's. Paul even mentions that the doctor would only give him a sulphur pill and he'd spend a week puking. That's the best they could offer in 1935. It was absolutely miserable, and it wasn't guaranteed to work. So people would definitely try to see if their bodies could fight it off alone before going to a doctor for treatment.

Just my opinion but often movie adaptations of Stephen King stories seem to be more the director's vision than the author's. Since I have not read this book I'm not judging this movie in any negative way, I'm not qualified to compare. This was awesome! Just sayin' not all movies based on his books are as good as his books. The written word forces you to use your imagination and picture things with your mind's interpretation, which can make it scarier (if it's a scary story) to you than whatever a director may have interpreted. Books have all the time in the world so they can give so much more detail. But you're not a book reactor you're a movie reactor - probably not your thing but if you ever wanna try "scary" you may wanna go for the original "Salem's Lot" or the classic "Carrie" That was a good "Green Mile" review, thank you that

Just a suggestion. It would help your reactions if you tried to pay attention better and maybe not talk over so much dialog. You are consistently confused at the end of the movies. And everything you're confused about was explained. You just missed it.

Mice live an average of 2 years and Mr. Jingles lived more than 60 years. Proportionately, that means Paul might live about 2,500 years. How old was John Coffey?

Not a great reaction to this movie, first of all, you talk too much over a lot of dialogue. You focus on a lot of things that is not that important to the basic principles of the movie, and skip over the more important parts that most of us find to be what the film is trying to convey. Your comprehension and paying attention is not so great.

Watching your reaction it was obvious to me you have gone through some shit in your life and done an extreme amount of detaching in your life but maybe a reaction channel isn’t right for you because the detaching made you miss pretty much all the life lessons that was being told and shown to you and you come off as a sociopath and I don’t think you are going to get many subscribers until you deal with your stuff or tell your people not to request any emotional movies

Ive done the "theoretical" math. Mice live for only about 12 to 18 MONTHS on avarage. Mr Jingles at that point has been alive for nearly 60 YEARS, film is supposedly in the 90s. Meaning Mr Jingles life was expanded at a MINIMUM, assuming a 2 year life of a Mouse, by a factor of 30 TIMES. IF we figure that a human is even half that, 15 times, thats 15 times 80 years. Meaning Paul will not likely die for another 700 YEARS. He is truely a modern alegory for Longenus, the Roman Centurion who was tasked with confirming Jesus death on the cross by stabbing him with a Spear. God punished Longenus with "Everlasting Life" to carry the burden with him for enternity.

I like a woman who's comfortable swearing 😂 The execution scene, while dramatic, wouldn't of had Del screaming, as electrocution causes muscles to contract. Still a powerful, horrible scene. In the end it didn't matter if Coffey was innocent, in the 1930s South USA, there was no way a black man was ever going to be exonerated even if massive evidence came up proving his innocence. I was hoping Percy the pr*ck was not going to be killed, and I thought his fate as a drooling vegetable locked for life in an insane asylum was perfect karma (I know we in the west misuse that word lol). As always, you're my favorite reactor and I enjoy your particular style. I'm looking forward to your next reaction. 😊😊
@ShreeNation2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Don for your supportive words :) Yes that's true, people can't scream while being electrocuted. I guess we can overlook that one goof 😅 And no Karma is definitely an English word on its own, and he got it ;)

@@ShreeNation It's always been my understanding the word karma came from an Indian language and we in the west always use it incorrectly. But yeah he sure got it and deserved it.😁

I don't think it matters if the parents find out. It actually makes more sense to let them believe that John did it. This way, his death means closure for them. Could you imagine how they'd feel if John was released and they find out that the man who did it is already dead? They wouldn't be able to make sense of it, they'd think it was some sort of conspiracy.

I can't cry easily, tears don't come naturally to me idk why. When I'm sad I usually feel wrecked on the inside and have to walk away, or I chase away my numbness using jokes. We all cope in different ways.

he gave a piece of himself to Paul so that Paul could see what John had seen Wild Bill do, he gave some to Mr. Jingles so he could live again. This is not the same as when he took the pain from Paul or Melinda. John Coffey was like Christ, or Christ-like sent by God to do good as a sign from God, but as Jesus knew ultimately his fate was not to live forever but to use his life to spread the word of God. in The end John like Jesus appears to succumb to the worst in Man, but in reality he has served his purpose and most poignantly returns to God at the hand of Man. It is unfortunate for Paul, that he sees the gift he received from John as a punishment for carrying out John's sentence. And goes thru life in regret rather than being Apostolic. Maybe that is why he remains so long on Earth.

Why do so many people not get the fact... that Mr jangles didn't get extended life, because John brought him back? He got it when he was still holding him, when Del was being electrocuted. It was an accident and didn't have anything to do with John bringing him back

Having some experience with loved ones in mental homes, I feel no conflict over Coffey's "use" of Percy. He may well have had some vision of the kind of sadistic thrills the little monster would have had at the expense of the patients. Such institutions were much worse then we than that are now, and they are no great comfort now.
