Commercial producer here... Nice job on this project!! On commercials they usually budget a prep day for the Producer, Director, DP, AD, Production Designer, Key Grip and Gaffer and a PA to drive everyone. You won't be there for the location scouting but will review photos in advance and then you will absolutely be there for the tech scout, which is 1 to 3 days before shooting, and 1 to ?? days of actual tech scouting depending on the size of your shoot. This allows you to plan your shots and shoot schedule in the locations with the director, figure out where to stage your trucks and gear, track sun path for your day, etc. with the AD, and your keys have time to build out their equipment lists and size of the package and crew required. Your AC uses that day to be in the camera house prepping the camera package. You call in changes from the scout as required, if you are running camera as well, you need to plan accordingly so you have time to get your gear set up. In my experience, if you are working that job as a Director/DP, a 1/2 day rate for the tech scout day in addition to your full day rate for the shoot days is what is typically budgeted. If they bid the job correctly, they should have given you enough crew to get the job done right. Hope that helps, sorry if I stated the obvious on some of it but thought it would be helpful to some of your viewers. :) In my opinion, they should have given you extra crew and gear to light the inside the Palm Springs kitchen while you were shooting the other areas, or a pre-light day if it was going to be that tight and daylight dependent.

i've shot so much low budget trash it's automatically predisposed me to analysing the problems ahead of time so i'm prepared with at least something for a solution. it takes more mental energy but preparing for disaster and having a just in case idea always saves my ass

Thanks for this series. It was great that you were able to have B-roll and permission to share the footage clips. Shoots like this are an involved process, and you cover so many of the hurdles we experience, and some we do not. Learning from others is a blessing, so thanks very much again. I totally agree that planning (especially scouting) is critical to a successful, or at least less stressful, production. Pre-production is the least expensive part of the production, and can save a TON of wasted time on set. I've been fortunate to scout most locations, but the last narrative shoot I did was across country and had to rely on minimal, poorly shot phone pics. Suffice to say that week of production was filled with problem solving, most of which could have been minimized with a proper location scout. Thanks again for this series, and I look forward to more of your YT videos.
