The Backstory of Jamie's Jeep....
Jamie has wished and WISHED for a Willy's Jeep for her Christmas and Birthday present 🎁 . Ian has had a beautiful Willys 1946 CJ-2a Jeep in the back sitting on a Willys M38A1 Chassis for the past few years. Ever since Ian and Jamie were married, Jamie has been eyeing it for a build on Full Custom Garage, sadly the project didn't make it to the show, but now she gets her wish! Jamie is learning about the history of these jeeps and is learning a little wrenching from Ian. The desert is a great place to go "jeepin" and Jamie wants to be part of the club in the warmer months and feel the wind in her hair as she drives to the local market. Jamie is down to get her hands dirty in the garage on this one! We appreciate our amazing support system in the desert with helping us procure the parts needed for this fun build!

I'm glad you shared your experience about the wheel blowing up. I took a guard off my grinder one day, because I saw another shop do it, and the disc kicked back and put a big gash in my finger. I learned an extremely hard lesson that day and now I never remove guards. I always leave the handle on my grinders also and I always hold the grinder with both hands. I also wear gloves and most importantly eye protection! Glad you didn't get hurt!

So glad you are okay. I worked for a chemical company in Los Angeles in 1973, we has a gasoline tanker from the 50s that had developed a leak. We hired a specialist to come and weld the tanker. He had thoroughly cleaned the tanker, flushed it several times and didn’t even dry it but he couldn’t leave water in it due to the location of the leak I guess. He was repairing it at our shop, had it in a corner of an open yard. Apparently there was still some gas trapped between the inner and outer walls and it exploded. We never found any remains! Always be super careful!

Ian, I love ya man. You started this video with a serious safety lecture & then drilled with a hole saw & a drill bit with no safety glasses on. Okay, your a seasoned pro. Side note: When I was an apprentice millwright in about 1979 I too was drilling without safety glasses that resulted in 3 days of great pain & an eventual trip to the eye surgeon to remove the shard that flew in my eye & started rusting over those 3 days. They dug it out with a needle & to this very day when I look at something like a white wall I can see the scarring from that like a small piece of fur dancing on the wall where ever I look. Stay safe. PS: You did well, the wife's a keeper . . .

So glad those chunks missed you Ian. I’ve got a really cool scar on my left wrist where a cutting disc on a 5” grinder bit me. It was so fast I hardly saw the grinder flash from my right side to my left when it grabbed but I remember looking at my wrist and seeing the white tendons inside the gash moving when I tried to wiggle my fingers and thinking “this isn’t good” especially when some of my fingers weren’t moving. I was lucky to have an amazing micro surgeon at the hospital that stitched everything back together and after 12 months of rehab I was all good. Complacency was the problem. Just making a gate and using the grinder with one hand and no guard so when it grabbed I had no control of what it did or where it went. It certainly gave me a wake up call. Cheers, Stuart 🇦🇺

If you choose to ùse another cup wheel on a 7 inch grinder ,try suspending the cup wheel on a rod(through the bore) clamped horizontally in a vice and tap around the o.d. listening for a sharp pinging sound, which means the wheel's good ,but if you hear a dull thudish sound; the wheel's cracked. The outfit I worked at had a rule about grinding wheels of all sizes and the sound test was it. If you've ever seen or heard a 36 inch o.d. grinding wheel explode while at full speed on a machine you'll never forget it. You might try wearing a leather apron, neck to knee length to keep an exploding grinding wheel or disc from penetrating the body, the shards will knock the snot out of you but that beats taking the dirt nap. Stay safe you two!

Having worked many years at large capacity steel fabrication facilities, we had a procedure in place that required a trained person change the grinding stones and check them in steel trash can with a covered lid with hole that was covered so as to ensure that the wheels had no defects or cracks I. Them. We fabricated heat exchangers with to 6” thick plate.

Nice little start to the video Ian, glad you never got hurt. But a reminder to wear proper PPE when doing a job is never a bad idea. My great uncle lost the sight in one eye when he was helping a guy poor an acidic substance into an acid bath his safety glasses were in his pocket, instead of taking the few seconds to put them on he thought “ it’s just a quick little job what could go wrong” well it splashed up and into his eye costing him his sight as I said in that eye, and this was the last day on the job as he was retiring. So thanks for putting that message out and Jamie great shots as usual and before too long you might be able to drive this thing.

Hi Ian, Thank you for warning people/fans that what you do, you make it look easy. If pros can get hurt, imagine people without training and experience. I know I'm a nag but steel is heavy. I'm glad you put that out there with the grinder. I'm always putting on my leather gear full face shield bandana around my neck. When using the grinder. Making shire someone is around just in case I have to speed dial to the hospital. I need to invest in a "turnakit" to cut off the blood if it's really serous to get some medical attention. Yes practice safety is for most important when dealing with power tools. Safety glasses even with doing something simple, dust, chip's of metal, something snap and go flying.

Grinders of all kinds are no joke. In machinist's school, i saw a kid not activate the magnetic chuck on a surface grinder. A 1x1x2" chunk of steel took a chunk out of the cinder block wall and flew half way across the shop. That would kill. Every grinding wheel/attachment has a max rpm for a reason!
