A reduced number of receptors, because of overstimulation, means that the dopamine is no longer able to create the same level of excitement or pleasure as before because of the lower intensity of electrical signal being passed on in the neural circuit. This change will eventually numb the brain response to normal stimulation, making you feel less pleasure and hence need stronger and stronger stimulus each time.

i’ve been trying hard to get rid of it for the last 5 month with some ups and downs. It’s terrifying to realise how hard it is to stop. You never think you’re addicted and then it hits you, kills your social life and your determination. Crazy to think it’s actually your own brain that makes it so that the more you get into it the harder it will be for you to stop. Some things were meant to be just Torturous pain.

I found this playlist almost 2 years ago and saved it but didn't watch the videos. I saw it almost every day and eventually without every even watching the first video I decided that I should try and stop. I failed and finally started to take it seriously and started learning more about the problem. So far I've been clean for 30 days for the first time in 5 years. Thank you for the work you do

God do I wish I found this video series sooner, I've been stuck for 3 years trying to quit the addiction but I never understood the extent of what I was dealing with. My biggest weakness is that I can never fall asleep at a reasonable time so whenever I'm feeling weak, I'll watch this instead of looking at porn. Thank you for the phenomenal work here as I'm sure this is helping hundreds if not thousands of people in my same position!

It was about 7 years ago I realized this was actually an addiction. Really hoping society begins to normalize porn discussion and the many negative effects from overconsumption. I remember those drug videos in school and I’ve never done a drug or drank a sip in my life but somehow addiction still got to me.

For people encountering this for the first time, another huge thing that's not included in these videos is that many of us who've dealt with these addictions also have had our brains affected by trauma before the addiction ever happened. Trauma triggers drive fight, flight, or freeze responses in our brains that do the same thing to receptors that the addiction does, and they also train our brains, through the reward circuitry, that the trauma response is how we remain safe. With addictions, many of us are replacing trauma responses or accompanying them with addictive behaviors. The book Unf*ck Your Brain is a really good introduction to this, for people who are interested. I recommend it because for a lot of us, simply stopping the addictive behavior is never going to work because we aren't going to the root causes.

I'm not a porn addict, quite the opposite. I'd have chosen cheesecake over masturbation in the previous scenario but I'm not addicted to food either. I'm in fit shape. I used to be voracious with porn and sought out sexual encounters late teens through mid 20s. 30 now, and this series presented itself to me in my feed. I appreciate how widely applicable this is because I have a substance addiction albeit mild compared to many. But reading around, all roads led to dopamine. My main bane is the instant gratification and impulsivity around it. Internet, KZbin, reading manga or any other consumptive no output activity you can imagine. As a software engineer, I can barely retain focus with the urge to seek anything more expedient and dopaminergic than stressing trying to solve a tough problem when we've the vast Internet and every distraction at our fingertips. Working from home makes this worse. These videos are on point and so widely relatable to how our culture is hung up by the effects of this change. Getting to the route of those dopamine habits myself, for example, could save my job. Thanks for the great work.

Literally answered everything I been thinking all day.this explains also why dating has changed. Before social media and technology being like it is dating a woman you can hit it off and who knows marry. But now watching this it makes sense why after a few months or even weeks of being in a new relationship you’re bored and want a new partner. Because your receptors are overstimulated which causes a depression type feeling which makes you not motivated and weak. That only creates a bad mind set in time.

I want to call your brain to the fact that nothing is to good for YOU, no matter how great the thing may be, no matter how undeserving you may seem to be. You are entitled to the best there is, for it is your direct inheritance. So don't be afraid to ask, demand and take. The good things of the world are not the portion of any favored sons. They belong to all, but they come only to those who are wise enough to recognize that the good things are theirs by right, and who are sufficiently courageous to reach out for them.

find a "WHY." find something that has been damaged by your addiction. Cry about it. think about all the hurt you caused someone due to it. and make that your why. It will give you the drive to start cutting out the bad. Simple terms, stop watching it and over time the habit will change. With addiction, its just that much harder because its that much more powerful. A cool podcast (if youre into those on your commute or free time) is "One extraordinary marriage." This is ALL TRUE. Its an addiction. Before the internet... It was VHS videos and strip clubs. Before that, it was magazines and the strip clubs. Before that, it was only the strip clubs, or going to an adult theatre. It all boils down to being a "chronic masturbator". Yes, you can meet someone new, and have relations quite often. But if you're a "chronic"... You eventually end up right back where you started. He just isn't that IN to me... She says. Yeah babe... you're right. Cuz you just don't know what is REALLY happening in my brain. Its a life long battle. You guys know EXACTLY what I mean. Women can be addicted to those power tools. The two of you can end up spending your lives together sleeping in seperate bedrooms. If you manage to stay together throughout this "battle"... YOU WIN!!!

The trouble with porn in today's society is it's accessibility...I mean nearly everyone can get access to the internet and TV today. And like you said before that people actually had to go looking for it as in strip club or going to the VHS store...There should be better education on this so the young can be warned of it's dangers. It should be taught alongside drug use as the effects are just as bad and it does warp your perception. I am trying to quite and i am currently on day 14 and want to quit forever.

Everybody seems to fail to understand that addiction isn't only about pure cold science; most of it is about spirituality (I don't mean religion) and emotions. Most "experts" say that "you will get stronger urges the longer you abstain", and that is simply not true. For me, I could go days without ever thinking about porn, and one day, I get a strong urge, maybe powered by some emotion I am not aware. The longer streak I had was when I had somebody by wy side who I could talk to. Addictions are all about isolation. Sure, it might have to do with circuitry on the surface, but emotions are the most influential.

I didn't think I was addicted either. But when I tried to quit it was very difficult. Try to quit it temporarily if you find that you feel the urge to return or you compensate by wasting time playing games or watching memes, vines, shorts, reels, tiktoks, then you are addicted. Try to divert your attention towards something constructive, try some hobbies. Hope it helps.

Ok ok, I am quitting. Fuck my dopamine system has been fucked for decades. I was on nofap for 6 months one time, but was still doing mindless browsing. I guess I need to cut all pleasures from life

So what they’re saying is that if you found a way to prohibit the decrease of receptors, you could use drugs and engage in other pleasure-activities without any consequences whatsoever?

No, decrease of receptors is just one of the many consequences

I appreciate what you're trying to do but this video is hard to follow. There are too many things going on at once, too many random sounds. I think it could be clearer.

if married, make that your why! A cool podcast (if youre into those on your commute or free time) is "One extraordinary marriage." The husband and wife openly talk about his issue with porn, and how they built back stronger. I have no affiliation besides listening and growing due to them. Sharing a tool I found!
