I was happy to see him install the shute which dropped the water further to the wheel's front thus increasing efficiency (The position where the water hit's the wheel sould be at that point where the water's dropping angle is tangential to the wheel)... now he's undone it again... Such a pity. And as soon as the gen is under load the resistance won't be exactly low.

It does serve a purpose to short out the generator. Your voltage measurements doesn't mean anything without a load. Make a test load from lightbulbs or a lenght of wire that you put in a bucket of water and measure amp and voltage at the same time. P = I x U (Power equals amps times voltage.)
@BenjaminEsposti
@BenjaminEsposti 6 жыл бұрын
Exactly, more voltage doesn't necessarily mean more power. (It can, but not always.)

He refers to an MPPT controller. Yes, there are variables but none the less, he will generate some very usable power from that small generator. Put some decent batteries there and you will power a small house with ease. Well done, a very good video

Peak power is achieved when the load's impedance matches that of the generator. If we knew the impedance of that motor we could calculate the power as (1/2 * V)^2/R where R equals the generator impedance. Estimating an R of 12 ohms that would be 18.75 Watts. Alternatively, he could have measured the short circuit current of the generator and calculated Power = (V-open * I-short * 0.25). Side note. U is not the symbol for voltage. I know you were taught this. I was too. But the correct symbol is V. Physicists get mad because they sometimes use V or v for volume and velocity (velocity's v is italicized unlike voltage).

Hi Joe! I don't know if I already asked, but... Here is how I would do it: First: I reroute the stream, so I can dig a hole deep and wide enough so I could put in a 10000 gallon rainwater tank and dig a trench for the 3 or 4 pvc pipes (for equal pressure for the pelton wheel) in a concrete casing in an angle downwards with a ball valve or better at the end. You could add 3 more smaller pvc pipes, to generate electricity, if you don't want to use magnets on your big generator, but magnet wire around a coil for both stator and rotor, like an alternator in a car. Second: put stainless steel mesh on the top of the rainwater tank, use big rocks to prevent debris from falling in. Then remove the bypass so the stream can start filling up the tank and then take the usual route. I don't know the conditions of the stream in the winter, whether or not water is completely frozen, but 10 feet below the ground, it's not below 0°C, the water doesn't freeze in the tank. certainly not when you insulate it with rockwool and then wrap plastic around it so it stays put and dry. Then downstream, you must have a way better waterflow this way and you just have to calculate how much water you need from the stream to keep them both optimal. Nobody will see it's there, so nobody will complain, and you have the benefits :-) Yes, it's costly, but you can also do it in concrete, that doesn't cost that much, just a lot more effort. This project takes so much time and effort and it will always have room for improvement, but what will be more costly in total, trial and error, or use my way where you will almost always have a constant flow and pressure of water. You'll have 240 volts that way with better generators and a pelton wheel. If you use the pelton wheel to drive a flywheel first, you might even be able to get 400 volts out of it. 40KW should be doable I think. think big :-) just make sure nobody can see it for the least amount of complaints :D

If you would extend your axles away from the water, you may make it last longer. I feel like everything is so close to the water that it will negatively affect performance and eventually cause it to break. Great idea and if this proves to be worth the effort, you can firm up the foundation with stone or concrete.

"Canyon hydro" is where I bought my hydo system. An environmental survey was done, test for migrating sea life, topographical scan from a drone. it was crazy all the stuff that had to be done. And don't get me going about the lawyers. It took over a year to get state permits. local permits were completed in 60 days. But the System runs about 250 amps 24/7/365. CH fly in by float plane to my property from Vancouver for maintenance once a year. been four years now. My 9 acre homestead is water front property on the Mitoh Island south of Petersburg. My closest neighbors are a 35 minute ocean boat ride away..no roads. Just how I like it. I don't mind discussion but I'm to private to ever film and post on KZbin. As a former Navy engineering officer, worked in Silicon valley and at one of our National Laboratories.. I don't trust much.

Looking from the chain side, you've got the water at the bottom of the wheel trying to turn it anticlockwise against the main flow which is turning the wheel clockwise. Turn the wheel assembly round 180 deg. and move it away from the end of the race so that the wheel is driven down the rear anticlockwise. Or dig the exit race deeper so the bottom of the wheel is out of the water.
@davidwalesby2426
@davidwalesby2426 9 ай бұрын
it does look like the current on the bottom of the wheel is fighting against the direction its supposed to go doesn't it, the wheel has to be raised and the troft with it.
@rogerbarton1790
@rogerbarton1790 9 ай бұрын
@@davidwalesby2426 Funny you should reply, I was thinking about this the other day. I'd try my original idea with an overshot wheel driven from the rear and as you say lifted out of the pool of water at the bottom. I would construct some sort of guide to collect the water that falls off the rear of the wheel and send it along the bottom of the wheel so you have both overshot and undershot. Steepen the exit from the bottom of the wheel to get the water away quickly. I think I should have said "...driven down the rear clockwise" instead of "...driven down the rear anticlockwise" in my original reply. I suppose it depends on which side of the wheel you're standing on!

To put power production in perspective a bit... Assuming you could get 10 watts of power out of your generator, you'd have to operate it for 100 hours or four days to generate one kilowatt hour of power, which you get charged perhaps ten cents for from the power company. It really sucks trying to compete with the power company!

I think you were picking up some drag at the bottom of the wheel. Also not making full use of all that water which was spilling out at the top. Might be better using a 8inch soil pipe and driving the water through a proper turbine blade like on hydro electric dam. That way you'll get the weight of all that water over the height adding to the energy. Most of the energy you have available is being lost down the slope, albeit it being converted into some kinetic energy but not a lot.

13:20 Never. trust. A fart. Interesting video, is there a reason you've chosen to build your own? I'm no engineer but I'm currently researching hydro electricity & though I'm very hands on and would love to build one myself it would seem incomparable to the efficiency of a manufactured turbine, such as the one in Kris Harbour's videos. I also noticed that your turbine appears to be slightly submerged in water, would this create resistance and hinder the efficiency? Which makes me wonder if you dig out the lower stream a bit, theoretically you should be able to adjust the turbine to dump water directly onto another turbine for an extra boost in power, no? Just a few points that may or may not improve your system. Overall great work on the project man, enjoyed the watch.
