Part Numbers: Best Practices and mistakes to avoid

I agree the most common mistakes we see in part numbering are: - Leading zeros - Using underscore (a hyphen or minus sign is totally acceptable) - Using letters (really slows down typing the PN) - Not enough or too many digits, 7 is very often a good choice, it gives ~9M possibilities (no leading zeros)

Would you consider fewer characters (I.e. 4 or 5?)

It depends on what is your company, Think about the total number of Part Numbers you need in your company. if 99999 is enough you can use 5 chars.
