Full Title: Participatory and Open GIS for Action-Oriented International Development: The Case of YouthMappers
Situated in the rich fields of participatory and the OSM ecosystem, this session describes recent work by a joint USAID-West Virginia University program, YouthMappers, to train international university students in participatory and open GIS techniques to address development needs. These needs were identified by the students themselves, community members and enabled by several US government agencies. We describe the training material, training events, and two use cases emphasing how OSM both as a tool and a community has facilitated this work. The session describes how flexible and locally responsive training best engages students and promotes sustainability. The use of open and low- or no- cost tools resulted in high levels of inclusivity.
