PARTICULARITIES of INTERIOR ARMENIA a GENEROUS land

To get to know a country in an integral way, it is essential to get lost in its most remote roads and towns. We have taken the train that goes from Yerevan to Gyumri and we are wandering around this northern city, which has 116,800 inhabitants. If Yerevan was a trip to nostalgia, here we can deepen it.
Gyumri has a history that goes back several centuries. It was founded in the 5th century and has experienced significant events over the years, including devastating earthquakes in 1926 and 1988. Despite these challenges, Gyumri has preserved its architectural and cultural heritage.
Gyumri residents are known for their warm hospitality and friendliness. Visitors are often welcomed with open arms and can experience Armenian hospitality at its best. We have experienced it, shortly after arriving a local inhabitant offered to guide us without asking for anything in return.
The city is known for its unique architecture and historical charm. Many buildings in Gyumri reflect Russian and European influence, with beautiful examples of Neoclassical, Art Nouveau, and traditional Armenian architecture.
The center of the city, called "Gyumri Kumayri", is a major tourist destination for architecture lovers.
A van from the RAF factory in Riga produced in Soviet times surprised us parked in the main square. RAF is the acronym for the Riga Automobile Factory, now defunct, and the interesting thing is that in the Baltic countries it is practically impossible to find a similar model on the streets.
Gyumri is an important cultural center in Armenia. The city is home to museums, art galleries, and theaters showcasing works by local and national artists. In addition, Gyumri is known for its annual "Gyumri Biennale" street art festival, which attracts artists from all over the world.
Gyumri has a rich folk and festival tradition. The people of Gyumri are known for their festive spirit and their love of music, dance and traditional celebrations. During festivities such as the Gyumri Carnival, the city is filled with colour, music and dance.
One of Gyumri's highlights is the Surp Nshan Church (Holy Church of the Holy Cross), an ancient religious building dating back to the 7th century. The church is an important place of worship and a testament to Armenia's rich Christian heritage.
The return by train allowed us to visualize forgotten populations on both sides of the tracks, with the sunset over Turkish lands, a few kilometers away to the west. It is the bare reality of a now free country that has endured long and hard conflicts, exoduses and subjugation in its history.
We return to Yerevan for another short stopover here before heading east to Lake Sevan and the tourist town of Dilijan.
