I just learned about the Rule of the Octave last week, and have been researching Partimenti. Everyone says I should have a teacher, and I don't have a lesson for another week. But that's the first concrete example of how to go about it. I will have a difficult time since my ear isn't well developed. I've faced other handicaps in my life so it won't stop me. Merci.

Hey Eduardo! I think the most basic introduction is Sanguinettis "Art of Partimento", it contains everything a starter requires. But there's lot of good stuff online: There's a proper free edition by Gjerdingen of the Fenaroli: sites.google.com/site/partimenti/resources/mon_of_partimenti/fenaroli A very serious and decent introduction to the first book of Fenaroli is by Derek Remes and its for free as well: derekremes.com/wp-content/uploads/Fenaroli/fenarolibook1.pdf This will help you to understand and apply very basic concepts of bass-centered thinking and developing basic diminution skills. Best source to start with diminutions is Durante: web.archive.org/web/20170309021836/faculty-web.at.northwestern.edu/music/gjerdingen/partimenti/collections/Durante/diminuiti/index.htm Just start with on of them, analyze and play the proposed diminutions by Durante and then apply them to the fitting places in the Partimento. This is some kind of implied learning and Durante is in my opinion the best way to learn Partimento at all, because most pieces are easy to grasp and most of them are composed with a clear methodical scope!
