Video from 2003 and 2005, as the second generation of commuter trains (S-tog) was being phased out in Copenhagen (Denmark). These trains ran from the late 1960's to 2007, connecting the neighborhoods of the city to the center of the town (recorded by Hunter Desportes).

I was fortunate enough to have ridden on these on my first visit to Copenhagen in 2001 (I believe they were primarily on the B, C, F and H lines by then) - And the closing doors warning tone is distinct enough to still stick in my mind - By the time I visited again in late 2008, they had been gone for more than a year.

On the one hand, it's sad to see these trains go, but on the other hand, it's nice to know that a few have been preserved for museums.

2 Generations s-tog forever! I am making a 3D model of the train and i will make animations and upload it as soon it's done. The 2.g s-tog will still continue their service in the virtual world, operated by me.

@Sohave people probably said the same thing about the 1st generation when they took over the steam engines. in the future people will probably say the same thing about the next generation S trains. I like the new ones as well at the old. I find the old cozy but maybe it's nostalgia that talks. I think the new S train is improved in so many ways.:)

@Sohave part 2. Speaking of Japan I think the Hankyu Line between Kyoto and Osaka is a nice example of making new classic design. Very nice rides! Unfortunately I haven't been able to find some footage from the inside. But maybe I will record some next week.

@Destointment I respect your opinion on some disagree. Yes people got a lot of nostalgia and are often frightened of things new. Through out the years there has been a lot of atempts to come up with new practical designs for stuf eg the VW bug which was also critisised by some when it first aired. These atempts has a lot of curage because when you change the general shape you can ether revolutionize everything or create a faliour, and you got to have a point with doing these changes and a vision

@Sohave I think you are somehow right in your argument. Why change the shape if it works already? I think the latest gen S-trains is designed with an attempt to create space for more people (thats why the humps on the sides) rather than a revolutionized design. It's a compromise between train, stations sized/measures and an increasing amount of commuters. Otherwise you would have to expand the stations like they have done some places in Japan.

@Destointment Same thing in Britan. if you look at a British train car you can the whole side is sticking out from the narrow bottom frame. this is because all their stations and platforms are from the Victorian era and designed for car types that became to small already in the late part of the 1800. But if you compare the S-trains with that I just cant understand why that extra space are only given to peoples hips and then narrowing in again below one meter over the floor.

@Destointment Sorry for the late response. I Know the Hankyu Line from the movie Grave of the Fireflies Which was situated in Kobe :-) Yes that is a nice and classical design. I believe I saw some pictures from the inside of some newer Hankyu series.

This is how design should be, a train shaped as a train. the new ones got no heritage they just look turn of the millennium pop smart, the person who designed them probably doesn't even like trains anyway. even the electronic departure whistle sounded better on the old ones as the new is just one high pitched electronic sound. they should have made a better replacement for those things

@Destointment (vol 2) How ever as functionalism revolted against erlier times of design which was filled with ornaments and slowly cut the shape down to its bare functionality. Today designers way to once again revolt against this paradime is to change the basic shape which can be favorable but is not always so. eg buildings such as the old busterminal on the town hall square in KBH. and the railway station in Odense where these changes of the basic shapes became inconvinient rather than practic
