No matter what you do the price to have a great engine just creeps up higher and higher. Looks great. We just finished a 489. That motor will be a beast.

496 IS A GREAT ENGINE . I PUT SOME DART HEADS ON MY 496 I'M VERY HAPPY WITH IT
@garysgarage.28416 ай бұрын
So my machinist called me here's my cost so far. Machine work $1496. That's cleaning and magnafluxing the block, boring and honing to .060 over, decking the block to as close to zero as possible, line honing with machine shop sourced ARP 2 bolt main studs, New cam bearings installed with new freeze plugs machine shop supplied, and balance of rotating assembly that I supplied. Cost of rotating assembly $3000. That's an international balance forged scat stroker crankshaft, forged Callies compstar H beam connecting rods 6.385 designed with clearance for stroker crank, Ross racing forged pistons for 6.385 rods, King xp coated narrow rod and main bearings and premium piston rings. $4500 at this point and still need more parts like cam and lifters going solid roller, harmonic damper going fluid damper, flywheel for std trans, head work gonna need roller springs and valve seals already have performer rpm heads low hours. It adds up and it's gonna need more.

Thats gonna make you a real nice engine! Machine work and balancing rotating assembly is pricey! I have a 555ci bigblock so i know how much it can cost. A good set of heads and intake etc. I think 550hp N.A. shouldn't be a problem for you. Good luck with the build.

FYI, Your comment regarding the difference between the Gen5 & Gen6 is actually opposite. The Gen5 doesn't have provisions to install a mechanical fuel pump and also a threaded boss for a clutch ball on the driver side of the block. The Gen6 block has the mechanical fuel pump boss casted on the block.

The two different icon pistons are different material fhr are made of 4032 and use 5/64 5/64 3/16 rings. And the high end icons are 2618 material and use 1/16 1/16 3/16 rings. They are decent pistons I upgrade the pins for boost though. Nice build
@EJonDaPedal11 ай бұрын
Thats good to know. If I use the pistons again in another build I'll make sure to upgrade the pins

The key is did you have a balanced. And the oiling system you have to have a big enough pan so you don't run out of oil at high RPMs. A good one you astray scraper helps immensely.

I've been considering building a 489 stroker for my 85 C30 dually, but lately I've been leaning more towards a basic rebuild and making it a 460. For one I'm not too confident about the auto parts store guy's claim that the reman 400 transmission I bought for this truck is good for 500 horses. Another thing is knowing me it would be a low compression engine when all is said and done anyway just so I'm not having to run high octane pump gas at all, even if it's dragging a 10,000 pound trailer down the road.
@EJonDaPedal Жыл бұрын
I'd go with a 489 but a 460 will still be good! Hopefully the transmission will hold up for u.

Nice work! Looks like the machine shop did a great job cleaning that block up and getting everything installed. It really came up good. What main caps did you end up using and what carb/intake runner/cylinder heads will you use?
@EJonDaPedal11 ай бұрын
There stock main caps with arp studs. I want to do efi but not to sure. Cylinder heads I'm gonna go with brodix or AFR.

Those newer blocks usually won't go .100 over anyway. Walls aren't thick enough. .060 and 496 is plenty

Even some of the old blocks have too much core shift. Back in the day we always did a half fill in the water jacket on the.100” over blocks.
