Don't forget that the explosives don't actually have to be much or very strong, as the small amount of gas produced, expands and creates pressure within the plastic shell of the popper, behind the cardboard plug, and only just has enough force to "pop" out the cardboard plug. It's more to do with the release of pressure from the cardboard plug, than it is to do with the explosive itself. Take out the cardboard plugs but leave the streamers inside, and the popper doesn't work. (it pops but nothing comes out.)

I modified one of those party poppers and increased the explosive power by adding picric acid and ETN with pottasium chlorate. Gave it to a friend on his birthday, boy was he not too happy. It was a little more powerful than I wanted.

the missuse of safety in this video is just painful. you should only act like something is dangerous when it actually is. otherwise your just making it so people can't distinguish real safety threats from fake ones.

Rinoa Super-Genius You make a good point, and I'd agree with you if we were talking about warm water or something. But these things do go bang, and a quick google shows that an adult politician was injured by one only a few years back. Combine that with this channel being kid friendly, and I think we're right to take the safety precautions we did. www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Madurai/sarathkumar-sustains-minor-injury-on-left-eye/article2633495.ece

Next episode she's going to deconstruct a thermal nuclear warhead on video. BUT DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME. YOU ARE NOT AN EXPERT.

Note: Once you've removed the explosive jacket from the radioactive material, it's actually very difficult to get the bomb to blow up.

As a Pyro-Tech you were wise to put on PPE for your eyes but you neglected to protect your ears. Impulse loads on your ear can do harm even with short duration. The position that nothing bad has happened in the past so the it must be safe for the future...i would note that the NTSB report on the DC Metro Red line wreck on 22 June 09 offers that such thinking was part of the cause. The past is not always a good example of the future. As well using Google as a source of technical data for a risk assessment, well it may not be the best source. One final note the typical human gets 2 eyes and 2 ears as standard issue, they are not replaceable. Please protect your eyes and your ears. My experience is only a few decades in explosive safety, I have found that being over prep is far better that anything else. You have two many great years ahead of you to become a injury statistic. Part of the reason the "pop" was louder than expected was it was on a hard surface and it was outside the paper friction pad. The wave bounced off the hard surface and would have about doubled the intensity. You may care to read Frank Bodurtha book on Industrial Explosion Prevention and Protection.
