I adore the marquee but it was unnecessary to add the Ya Got Trouble and 76Trombones in those weird orange squares on the side. Also whenever there's a big name in the show, it'll usually be in very large letters along with the title (think, Bette Midler in Hello, Dolly!)

Fun fact for all Beetlejuice fans. I know that not a lot of people will see this, but Beetlejuice is going on a national tour in 2021. I was really sad until I found this out. The dates and citys have not been disclosed yet, I will comment the city’s as soon as I find out. Spread the word!

Hot Topic is pretty neat nowadays, despite their horrid aesthetic and cramped layout. They have tons of great merchandise from stuff like Disney, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Harry Potter, etc. It's awesome if you look past the oppressive atmosphere! Yeah, sure they have all your favorite chains and goth collars and stuff. But I honestly feel like that's pretty minimal nowadays compared to the rest of their stuff. They had a bomb-diggity Jasmine necklace from the live-action Aladdin, and they carry lots of jewelry in a similar vein! Okay, sorry, thought I'd put my two cents in. For the topic that wasn't even the main one. The "hot" topic, if you will.

If memory serves from High School, Music Man has some very specific rules in the licensing agreement about the size of meredith willson's name on ad materials. Something about xx% the size of the music man title. My guess is that + some contract rules with jackman/foster along with a pissing match + ad department caused this clusterfuck

The colors are just a bit off for me. I understand that they maybe don’t want to use red again because it’ll look too much like Hello Dolly’s ads, but I would’ve at least used colors that resemble the classic marching band aesthetic

Not to be a graphic design major on main but I think the marquee is pretty similar to most posters and signs from the period the show is set in. I highly recommend googling Victorian posters bc it's the most chaotic typography you will ever see. I do agree it's hard to read at a glace and if you weren't familiar with the show you probably would be confused about what it was for, they probably should have made the show name way bigger that the performers. It might have been intentional (I hope not bc oof it bad) but if I've learned one thing at college it's to claim you mistakes were purposeful during critique.

I would really really hope that they would film the production like they did with Kinky Boots, Shrek, She Loves Me, Spongebob the musical, 42nd Street and Everybody's Taking About Jamie. It would do really well because tickets are gonna be impossible to get for this show and SOOOOOO EXPENSIVE but there will be such a high demand for tickets with who the leads are

I kind of like the “busy” design of the current marquee b/c it does showcase that early 1900s vibe quite well, but I also do agree that it’s a little TOO busy-if they removed the song lyric blocks on either side of the title and leads’ names, it might be more effective. But who knows? 😂

So apparently the voice of sonic, ben schwartz (most known for his role as jean-ralphio on parks and rec), was offered a role in a musical but he turned it down because he was nervous. So sonic the hedgehog in a musical is honestly a very real possibility lmao (Source: comedy bang bang, but i forget which episode)

Beetlejuice was my first Broadway show, so I'm pretty sour about the whole ordeal regardless of anything. I also really don't care for The Music Man for various reasons. However, even if I DID like The Music Man, that marquee is just trying too hard. I understand that ads of that time period had similar word spacing and placement, but I think simpler would have been better. I would also 1000% rather have them do Annie Get Your Gun.

Hi, I’m a graphic designer. Just graduated with my degree and took history of graphic design. When I first saw the marquee, I got exactly what they were trying. The design is very accurate to posters and marquees of that time. However, it is very crowded and has little to no hierarchy. But I get what they were going for, wether it was successful or not.

i think if they wanted to include the celebrities they had cast in the show on the marquee, i would have switched the font colors and changed the size. so "the music man" would be bigger and in blue, and "hugh jackman" and "sutton foster" would be smaller and in red. i just find the difference glaring so my eyes are drawn to the actors instead of the show, which i know was on purpose because while sutton foster and hugh jackman are obviously great performers, this is totally stunt casting, but i would have promoted the actual musical more along with its cast so it's more well known after the stars leave. instead of "we could go see the music man on broadway!", people will say "we could go see that one musical with the guy from x-men and (i'm not sure what sutton foster is most well-known for outside of theatre) that lady from bunheads!" because once the stars leave i have a feeling the show is going to suffer BIG TIME. i talk too much

Could be that the folks/entity who own the rights for this show require that it always be phrased as "Meredith Wilson's The Music Man." Just seems like that's the way I've always seen it. (Also I seem to remember my high school choir director in charge of our production of it said something like that. Although that was more than several decades ago, so don't quote me on that. ) And yes, that marquee is a mess.

As much as I LOVE Sutton, I just feel like there were so many better choices for Marian. They did an off Broadway run with Jessie Mueller and Norm Lewis and while Norm wasn’t my favorite, Jessie was a dream come true. Her acting, her beautiful voice, and the way she just embodies Marian. I wish they had gone with people who truly fit the part rather than money grabs.

1.) It is upsetting that Beetlejuice was closed, but shitting on 2.) I don’t think it’s stunt casting because Hugh and Sutton are actually very talented, but having the emphasizing on Hugh and Sutton makes it look like that Also- based off Seth’s performance of Shipoopi in Family Guy, I really really want to see him playing Marcellus and not Harold haha
