I took my FourTrax engine off the frame to fix some stripped head cover bolt holes and when taking the engine off I took the side gear assembly/shaft out and all those gears fell loose. I tried to line them up and did ok (tho I had to split the case to eventually place the washer back on that shaft ). Upon tapping the cover holes, changing the timing chain and reassembling it, I found there was no drive. I assumed it was the side gear where I pulled it out. So I removed the engine again and disassembled it again and split the case to find the washer and placed it back on the mainshaft. All the gears appeared right and zi shifted through them while turning by hand. Im assuming it wasn't the transmission but possibly the clutches themselves. I'm thinking I'm going to reassemble the case tomorrow and if I put it back together and it doesn't drive yet again it's probably a problem with the clutches and if I have to work on those again I'll just leave the engine on and remove the clutch cover on the side to work on it. Any idea why the clutches would happen to not work after being removed and reinstalled normally? It appeared to install right... Edit* the reason I took the side gear off is because I was new to these engines and how they came apart. You live and learn 🤣

Hi John, I’ve got a 2009 r6. I replaced the clutch with a Yamaha oem clutch kit, including steels, fibers, and springs. When I put everything back together my clutch has no resistance. It’s as if the lever does not have enough space to make the clutch engage. It seems like I left a washer out or the three finger springs aren’t pushing the outer clutch out enough. Do you have any idea what the issue might be? Thanks

Good afternoon everybody. I got a similar question to what you just exposed @Maximus Max. John, I have a Polaris RZR 900 XP EFI 2012 and whenever I release the gas pedal the clutch system reduces the speed so drastically that the tires literally go skidding the road. What can I do? Should I change the weights/spring / ... on the primary clutch or should I change the driven one? Thanks in advance

Except for a few BMWs and older Harleys and Ducatis that use dry clutches.

If you had access to a Ducati with a dry clutch, you could show a clutch in action! Put it on a dyno - even better! ;)

Nice video John, keep the good work going. Hey, is there any chance you could make a video about the differences between the motorcycle pressure plate clutch and the slippery clutch version? i.e. my 14' GSXR1000 comes with a standard clutch but newer versions come with a slippery clutch, what's the difference? thanks in advance.

I'll see if we can get it done.

"Slipper clutch." A slipper clutch allows the clutch to slip when downshifting, so if the rider doesn't get his or her shifts "just right," the rear end doesn't lock up and send him or her into a skid. With a slipper clutch, theoretically, one could be traveling at 65 mph in 6th gear, downshift to 1st, and let out the clutch lever, and the rear wheel would not lock up. Yes, the engine would over-rev to the moon, but at least he wouldn't go skidding down the road on his backside.
