Details are everything in engine building, so the key here is to take your time. Since we’re installing a new Wiseco forged piston, we’re going to pay special attention first to our ring gaps AND the position of those gaps around the piston itself. John will show you how to measure the ring gaps and then how to grind the piston rings to meet the exacting specifications for this build.
With the ring gaps measured, we have a choice: we can install the rings on the piston BEFORE we attach the piston to the connecting rod, or we can do it after. In our case, we’ll make some marks to show us how the rings will install, and then we’ll get the piston in place. Once that’s done, we’ll get the piston rings on.
Once the piston is in place, we can slide the cylinder over the top. Take your time here and don’t force it: you’ll need to add a little pressure to the rings to get them past the opening at the bottom of the cylinder. Once that’s done, it’s just one bolt to hold everything in place to complete this part of the build.
