I appreciate your effort to make this video, how ever, I believe you should have made it aware that the CV Joint does not just slide off easy as you show in the video. The fact is, there is a C spring clip on the end of the axle shaft that holds the CV joint on which makes it extremely difficult to remove the CV joint. I used a 35lb. slide hammer to overcome the spring clip to get the CV joint off and it took almost a dozen slide hits to get it off. In fact I believe that if the cv joint does just slide off you probably have a problem with the C clip needing to be replaced.

I wish I saw this comment before I tried this. You are exactly right what a pain in the rear

Craig you are correct. Sometime things DO NOT go smoothly. This one did for me and only took a couple taps before it slid off the retaining clip. I caught the tear really early so no corrosion had gotten in there. This one on the 850 was another story. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2bEh3yVpt-abZo

I didn't want to slide it out of the transfer case so in order to stabilizer the axle shaft, I sandwiched 2 short 2x4 wooden blocks between the shaft and the lower "A" arm and clamped it with a welders adjustable "C" clamp. I then bent the knuckle as far as possible by hand and held a stout drift pin on the edge of the bearing and slugged it with a 3 lb ball peen hammer.

There is no way that the CV cup pops off that easy. Just did the outer boot on my 900 and it took lots of hammering as with any CV boot replacement I've done. Also if you are into it that far one should take the complete CV axle off and work on it on the bench in a vice. Before reinstalling grease the inner axle splines before popping the axle back in.
@sinkutwireless5 жыл бұрын
The other way to do it if the outer cup doesn't seem like it will come off as too much hammering is not good for the joint, the inner CV cup can be taken apart without hammering but does take longer and requires removing the CV boot. Maybe a complete new axle isn't that costly in the end?

Yeah, no shit. Mine was a pain in ass. Had to take the whole axle off

Does a 2013 ranger 900 xp’s axle come apart at the end like that 2016. All I’ve got to replace is the outer boot just like you did.

2013 Ranger 800. Trying to pull the front outer hub/CV joint to replace the boot. Couldn’t get it off. We even had a slide hammer on the castle nut. We finally gave up and put it all back together. I was afraid we were going to damage the bearings in the CV joint. We even tried driving it in and then back out to break the snap ring free. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

very good video ..i have to pull the pilot shaft and it looks like it has to come right out the front .. no way in hell will it come out the back ..so this helps lots ..thank you

Hey @philclark354, maybe yous doesn't have the inner circlip. My 2017 does and you have to hit it pretty hard with a 3 lb ball-peen hammer to get it off.

How much more work is it to replace the upper boot? Also, how necessary if the wrench for removing the clamp?
@a.scottdagata92744 жыл бұрын
you can cut the clamp but it is next to impossible to complete the job without the clamp pliers

Really should not use chrome sockets on impact. They are not rated for that. Had a good friend loose a eye that way when it exploded.

It doesn't just slide out like that I've replaced plenty of boots show the people really what they will come up against
@alexreal48742 жыл бұрын
That’s a load of nonsense. That cv cup does not come off that easy. I highly doubt it does on any model. You should probably warn people there are usually snap rings holding it on
@MassiveOverkill6 жыл бұрын
Does the CV joint come off that easy? I have a 2015 Ranger 900 XT and the CV joint isn't coming off. I also have steel rims and just put the tire back on to break the axle nut free, which is handy if you don't have a helper.
@stevesaylor23045 жыл бұрын
Not always! The circlip that keeps the joint on the axle can get rusted or just not compress enough to let the joint come off. I've taken air hammers and big hammers with brass drift punches to get some of them off.
@marvinhenderson44175 жыл бұрын
No.That part of this video is an outright lie.They skipped all the hard crap.I've been doing this since cv joint front wheel drive cars were just becoming popular and not one,ever came apart easy.Also ASE certified.If it was as easy as shown it would fall apart on the street.

Is it even possible to remove the outer joint without taking out the entire axle? I wasted an entire afternoon because of the false narrative on this video.

Have you even really ever done this job? Serious question. How is a person supposed to take you repair serious? You are telling us that 2 clamps & a piece of rubber hold the outer CV to the main shaft? WOW!
