Another great video. A couple hints that I have found useful. 1. Rather than removing the foil seal on the brake fluid bottle, poke two holes on opposite sided with a clean nail. This lets your pour a controlled, drip free stream from one hole while air vents in the opposite hole. 2. Place a clean utility knife blade in your master cylinder during flush/bleed. Allows you to leave the cover off without getting fluid squirted out each squeeze of the lever.

The brakes described in previous comment are on a 2003 Polaris 330 magnum atv. The calipers in front and on the back have been changed and both master cylinders have been changed. I have bled them numerous times

Use a small container of clean fluid to vent the fluid into as you bleed. It will allow you to easily see any bubbles and even how much fluid you are moving during each stroke of the handle.

This was a bear of a job for my 98 Polaris Sportsman 500. I spent almost 2 days trying to bleed the brakes. The foot brake went okay but the handle bar lever was a terrible job and I got no success doing it this way. Instead I found information on reverse bleeding using a new old can ($7 at Canadian Tire), clear hose and a turkey baster. This was a much easier because the master cylinder just does not pump enough to rid the system of air when bleeding all 3 calipers. By rotating back and forth doing this, I finally got brake pressure back again. The video was good for the foot pedal as it's a small system but I was ready to give up on using it for the lever.

Your suppose to do the rear master cylinder first using the front brake lever as it is the longest line in the system. Then do each front side using the front lever. Then do the rear brake using the foot brake lever. The 850’s have a junction box or distribution block in the system. Meaning you bleed in 4 places not 3.

By the way. The leak on the rear reservoir is at the barb fitting/hose connection. The brakes were working fine til this. The handlebar Reservoir lost all its fluid but the rear brake reservoir is full to the max without adding fluid.

I'm working on a 2014 Sportsman 400HO. If pumping the handle only develops a mild resistance, I guess this means the master cylinder is gone? It started by working "weird", sometimes going down a hill you would have to release and pump the handle to get brakes and then over a week or so, no brakes at all. I checked and changed the fluid and bled at all calipers but not getting much back resistance.

Jumping in this a little late, at the tail end of this video you mentioned about the rear brake reservoir bleeding over, this is happening on my 99 scrambler 400 when I pump the left brake handle. The brakes were working fine then they wouldn’t build up pressure, when topping off the handle reservoir and pumping the brake handle the bleed over occurs. On the fronts the pads appear to have adequate pad material. When I spin the hubs with the front wheels off, the right side spins freely with no resistance while the left spins with resistance then catches and you’ll need more force to spin it. On the rear, the left bad looks much more worn that right pad. I’ve bled the brakes without getting things to firm up. Could the rear pads need changed to prevent the rear resovoir overflow or be a combination with the fronts too?

Maybe non conventional but i loosened the master cylinder tube connection and used a syrenge to fill the caliper through the bleed screw until fluid came out at the master cylinder. After that bled as per normal and walah i hv brakes! Thank you for you support it really helped.

The guy said I needed a new master cylinder in the back and that it took care of my master cylinder problem but that when he tried to bleed the air that it was bypassing to the front master cylinder. John, I have a Polaris 700 Twin EFI. It has a brake device connected at the base of the rear brake pedal. The rear brakes work fine when the handlebar brake is depressed. But I get no rear brake when I depress the pedal. I adjusted the linkage so that the brake device by the pedal is compressing. Nothing. I took it apart and cleaned it. Bled the brakes. Still no rear brake via the pedal. Suggestions? Thanks, Steve

Hi Dudu, The short answer: About once a year is good for maintenance purposes, and -- no -- you don't need to bleed your brakes every time you change your brake pads. The long answer: Bleeding your brakes is all about making sure there isn't extra air in your brake lines. You'll need to bleed your brakes anytime you do any type of procedure that will introduce air into your braking system. For instance, if you were to do a rebuild of one of the brake calipers, or the master cylinder itself. Since changing your brake pads won't introduce any air into your brake lines, you're safe to change your brake pads without bleeding your brakes. Another thing to take into consideration is that brake fluid absorbs water which can create air pockets in brake lines -- so you may need to bleed your brakes more often if you're in a very moist environment or if you drunk your machine a lot on the trail. You should bleed your brakes when they start to feel spongy when you compress the brake lever, or if the lever continues to compress even after you you have the brakes applied. If you feel either of these symptoms that means that there is likely air in your braking system.  Planning to bleed your brakes about once a year is usually good unless you're feeling symptoms like those described above. How often you do need to bleed our brakes depends on how you use your machine -- only you can tell how it feels, how much moisture is in the air where you live, and how often you're dunking the thing on the trail.

Keith Boyd you shouldn’t need to if you are just working on one front side or just the rear. If you are replacing a brake line though I would bleed everything as ALL the brake lines on the 850 go to a junction box up front. I mentioned the bleed order in a previous comment but here it is. 1) Rear Master Cylinder (using front brake lever) 2) One Front Caliper 3) The Other Front Caliper (front order does not matter) 4) Rear Caliper (using foot brake). Do yourself a favor and get a BikeMaster air powered bleeder. Makes the job easy. Hook up to the valve and lock the BikeMaster on (engage air), slowly crack the valve until you see fluid then go check the reservoir. It will slowly go down and all you do is sit there and fill until you are satisfied all old fluid is gone or all air is purged. Then go close the bleeder valve. Then unlock the BikeMaster to stop suction. Do the next line. 10x easier than pumping brakes and opening and closing bleeder valves over and over again.

I put new front brake pads on my Polaris yesterday and I tried to spin the rotor by hand and it was real hard to turn so I took it for a ride and it would slow its self down a decent amount. I was thinking the caliper or piston was sticking. Could any buddy help me out..

There are quite a few things this could be. Fuel, vacuum lines, etc. Typically with the Sportsman, investigate the Drive (Primary) Clutch. Check the springs and ramps (Polaris calls them Buttons) for abnormal wear.
