Talk about flexion. That just looks cruel.

The side reins used in vaulting are simply used to keep the horse's head in position and their body in good form. You can tell the horse is comfortable with it by seeing the forward-looking ears and relaxed tail.

It's not, the horse isn't hyper-flexed and still looks relaxed. If you want to see cruel look up the dressage "technique" rollkur.

Believe me, you don't want the horse to have the head up higher. This head position makes sure that horses engage their back muscles and can carry riders/vaulters safely. Otherwise the vaulters would "hop" onto the horses skeleton. And this horse does not even look slightly unhappy. The tail is relaxed, the ears move freely and are not pinned, mouth is closed and the whole horse gives off relaxed vibes.

@@blauespony1013 Well said, thank you! I didn't even know that's why they used side reins in vaulting.

Volting horses are very large, and the exercises last around 1min 30". So that's not a lot of stress for the horse, which has to gallop slowly in a circle. High jumping and especially race jumping are much more damaging for a horse's body, because they exert too much pressure on the thin front ankles, when the horse lands after an obstacle.
