I'm Vietnamese, and I agree with you on many points but it is definitely not true that Vietnam is Washington's best friend, LOL. Vietnam also has a VERY good relationship with Russia (most trusted partner when it comes to our security interests), and even though the relationship to China is not without challenges, the Vietnamese government does have a mostly good relationship with China. Xi Jinping just gave Nguyen Phu Trong the medal of friendship some weeks ago. If Vietnam wanted to be Washington's best friend, the Vietnamese would not have driven the US out of our country during the Vietnam war. We also do not have any US military base on our soil for that very reason. Germany is US' best friend, Japan is US' best friend. Vietnam is definitely not.

China is a democracy, just not America's style of democracy. I've lived in China for 17 years and I can tell you they are listening much more to the people that the West has ever done. Just look at the Consultative Conference in China, for example. Also, there are 9 legal political parties in China and the President is required by law to meet with them and take guidance. Also, all politicians in China must be elected, the difference is that the votes are cast by people that are qualified to elect the next level. Also, Russia is also a democracy. This idea that they are both Autocracies is utter nonsense. Foreign census companies often report that Putin and Xi have 80%+ support of their own people, and I can attest to that being true.

The collective waste as you call it does have very big differences. But by calling it the collective waste the CCP alienate itself and they form a common negative opinion of the CCP. The CCP views American allies as "Vassals". Such views scares the smaller countries. They know if your a vassal of one country, and many have been so, then you can very easily be a vassal of another. Liberal-democracies will defend their freedom rather than become vassals of China or Russia. History has shown that andcontinues to show that.

Great perspective. To me China is the only nation that is systematically and methodologically reshaping itself and it's people for the 21st century both inside and outside the country. The 21st is a century of disruptive changes brought about by technologies, climate change and geopolitics. China has the resources, politics will and the support of it's people to make the changes. Like you said change is the constant in China. This re-engineering of the nation, we can call it that, is comprehensive involving the visible and the intangibles (culture, structure and mindset of the Chinese people) to better fit into the new world. Yes. China has to be on our radar. China is showing what the 21st century can be like.

Taiwan for the longest time has been considered a part of China (UN is on One-China policy) - so if US interferes in China’s domestic issues by arming Taiwan to fight against mainland China, CPC gov won’t allow it. Think of it on reverse. Would US allow China to occupy and meddle in one of its states, for ex. Maine, to go at war with USA with the assistance of China? Do you think US would stay passive in that scenario? So don’t blame China for its intention of protecting its own territory.

Being a Chinese American originally from China and ran a startup before pandemic in Beijing, I am humbled by your insights in China. It is challenging for western educated person, including me who grew up in China, to understand China's perspective. The main obstacle, at least for me, is our moral judgement against authoritarian regime. With individualistic lens on, we couldn't objectively observe and hence scare of this emerging power. I am not saying I am agreeing with let alone supporting the leadership. What I am saying is it will serve ourselves well when we can view the world in an objective way and not let our moral judgement get in the way of rational decision making regardless your motives.

what do you mean china will be back. china was never gone. in fact, china has grown stronger (technology, infrastructure, industrial production, supply chain, military etc etc.) while the west has grown diametrically weaker. not only that, china has the most responsible government in the world - one which is actively popping the real estate bubble and moving towards the goal of homes at affordable prices for everyone. china has vast amounts of land, there is no reason for property prices to be exorbitant or downright extortionary benefitting nobody but speculators and rentiers. in fact, the chinese government is actively going after all speculation and monopolistic practices. on top of that, china has secured a more or less endless supply of cheap energy via it's partnership with russia. and on top of that, china is leading BRICS which will represent 60% of the world's population (assuming saudi arabia and the other 12 potential applicants are inducted) and almost all of it's resources and industrial production. the belt and road initiative will link all of these countries creating a virtuous cycle of trade and resource sharing.

Why does the West believe "control" is bad or wrong? Isn't the primary function of government to control a country's destiny, to control a country's safety, security, prosperity? Isn't the purpose of government to oppose anarchy and chaos? If it's a question of degree, I believe it's better to have more control than less. Look at what happens when a government has less control... - millions of people die *needlessly* from a pandemic - countries suffer terrible inflation and fuel shortages as they kowtow to US sanctions against Russia - endless warfare is waged around the globe (e.g., Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Ukraine, etc.) In the United States, we see the consequences of less control... - over a million Covid deaths - rampant gun violence - rampant homelessness - unaffordable health care - $31 trillion national debt due to endless money printing - crumbling infrastructure - January 6, 2021 Capitol Hill riots - etc.

You can also add this one on top : A simple Google search shows that in the *ENTIRE* history of the US from 1775, there were *ONLY* 17 years where the US was not at war. China is concentrating on constructing infrastructures all throughout the developing world because it knows that the first step to bring development to these developing countries is to have good infrastructures in place. Western colonial slave owners were not interested in developing their colonies, rather to keep them poor and dependent on their slave owners.

It's always good to see there are still people from the so called "west" are TRYING to look at China objectively. I'm a proud Chinese, and in China we have a word for those who are unable to look at things objectively (or unable to comprehend the reality) - stupidity! I respect the speaker here and applaud to what he's doing, but why go through such length when you can just lay out a few simple facts: China is the 3rd largest country on the map, China is the largest country by population, China has the largest economy by PPP standard, for thousands of years China was 40% - 80% of the world's economy... So, whether you like it or not, the so called "west" are mostly a bunch of small countries. They became powerful because the seized a few opportunities (such as the1st industrial revolution, etc.) in the last two centuries or so. But a couple of hundred years are just a blink of eye in history, eventually most of these countries will be put back into where they truly belongs. If you fail to understand that, well, you might get hurt in the process and the result won't change. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to badmouth or disrespect what these countries have accomplished. I'm simply saying that the "western" thinking (come on, just admit it that many of you are thinking like this) that you are the best and everybody should just follow whatever you want them to is not only dangerous but also naive. Because it blinds you from seeing what's really going on. An ancient Chinese book named "the art of war" says: know yourself and know your opponent would bring you victory to every battle.

Dear Pascal, thanks for your exhaustive explanation about China. Like you said, you have come to know China, and been in China for the last 35 years. You had a front roll seat of witnessing China’s economic transformation, and China’s socialist ideals reinvigoration! China never wanted capitalism in the absolute American sense, Deng XiaoPing said it in 1978. China always wants a robust economy with an equitable sharing by the mass, only can be guaranteed by a socialist ideology! China is a society of collectivism of 1.4 billion individuals. The collective West, US being the leading example, is a society of collections of Individualism. There is a huge difference in societal outcome! As to decoupling from China, advocated by US, who is also lining up its “allies” aka “Fodders”, China responded with BRI “ Belt and Road Initiative”. In final calculations, China will succeed. US is lining up 12% of worlds population in the collective west to decouple from China, while China is looking at the rest of 88% of the world’s population in global south, to make the BRI economic cake bigger, and eat it too! Brilliant strategy on Xi JingPing’s part👍

Pascal, this is one of your best videos explaining China. Overall, you are right on the mark. I think the fear by the west, the US in particular thinks in terms of the west and that China is fearful because it wants to be the hegemon. That narrative has been shouted out loud ad nauseum. The truth is, China is driven by business and success in business is in China's driver seat and it sees if other succeed, business will grow and be better. Business is good for people and its country. That underwater action is not appreciated by most in the west. China does not come from a colonial mindset. In fact, it was a victim of colonialism so it recognizes the pain of most underdeveloped countries. China's formula for success is being emulated around the world and that seems to escape the west, they always seem to think in imperial and colonial terms.

Whem approaching and trying to make sense of China, what western can and should do is to firstly put aside any bias they received from MSM, and read thru youself "Can we trust china" for more in-depth research from expat in China. This is a prefect starter to familiar yourself with alien country like China. With curiosity and a little bit venture-mindset, I also suggest you can plan a trip to China to get yourself a true feeling of China. "If you are not with me you are against me" is as I understand in the bible. I am not sure this is the spirit of democracy where tolerance of diversity is vital. How dare the Global West use this ideology and call themselves democracy! "Rule based order" is also used so often. Who set the rules? How many countries had a say when those "rules" were made? Let us look at a recent example. In the last United Nations General Assembly on Cuba embargo, overwhelmingly, 185 countries voted in favour of a non-binding resolution condemning the embargo, with the US and Israel voting against and Brazil and Ukraine abstaining. Agreed it is non-binding but where is the spirit of democracy? Fine, US and Israel companies do not have to trade with Cuba, but how about companies owned by the 185 countries? No, US can unilaterally make the rule that the embargo applies to foreign companies who do business in the US. What kind of international rule based order is this? It has to be changed.

Really like how Pascal borrow a quantum computing term, "qubit mindset" as a way to approximate how the Chinese (leadership and in some way individual) thinks differ from the binary classification the West usually use. It is common for Western analyst to see Chinese part of the "socialism with Chinese characteristic" as what they understand as Confuscian. IMHO, in terms of governance, the Chinese part is actually more Daoism (the philosophical part and none of the reliegious part). For example, there is a saying about glasses of of water from both the West and Chinese. The West sees a glass of water and wonder if it is the binary of half full or half empty. The Chinese saying goes something like: If a glass has water in it (full or partial), it can be used (drank to slate thirst), and an empty cup can hold water. So it is a bit more than the quantum superposition of it can be both states. It is also saying that even if the observation is made and the superposition collapse into disntinct state, there are practical uses or a place in the world for any resultant state. PS: I think at 28:50 and on, instead of "influence and influx". I think "influence and interdependence" better describe China seeks in trade and international relationship. Selling goods is nice, so is buying them. When two countries depend on each other, there is trust and thereby longer term peace. Yes, I did put the "longer term" there on purpose because Chinese recognize impermanance.

Of course, It was artificial simplification. As I see, separation of countries on "Democracies" and "Autocracies" is looks very-very similar, difference is it's promoted by western MSM and ruling groups, not by Central Commitee of Communist Party of USSR. 😀And it is all about cold war (Cold War I then and Cold War 2 now). Do you have any suggestion on how to invest money in China ? I'm from France and I really want to secure my saving because right now they could be lost forever if a crisis in Europe affect French bank (like it did in 2008). I have been following China's growth for a while, as well as trying to understand this country (very hard). And if I have to invest into a country, I want to do it in China. And it's either I find a meaningful way to invest in China's economy, or I invest on a platform like masterworks. Obviously I won't take any advice at face value but still you are an investor / "expert" of China.

If you want to invest in China, then you must know how the gov think. If you invest in the opposite of China gov interest then your investment can be wiped out at any moment's notice. e.g. if you invest in education industry a few years ago, it looks really rosy, but these two years it got wiped out due to the industry going to the opposite of what the gov wants. i.e. cheap education for the masses instead of adding extra financial load to parents.
