FWIW, it just occurred to me that if you put magnets on the bottom of the dogs, they could not only pull up the extension stops but, if you put magnets in the bottom of dog-sized holes in the side of the workbench, they would hold the dogs in place when not in use.

That’s right Ben. I spent my first few months clamping boards to my kitchen sink. Once I made the mini work bench, I would clamp it down to my kitchen table. Now, I have a bora work table that I can quickly put up and take down and clamp this mini workbench to the top. Works great and easy storage!

@Falconhoof Lots of patience and time (the lockdowns helped with that one). I used a wooden handscrew clamp clamped to my kitchen countertop as a makeshift vice, cut all the maple with a Japanese hand saw, cordless drill for holes, and cleaned up stanley no. 5 for flattening and squaring things up. Boy are things easier now that I actually have the vise to work with.

I fully agree with the use of scrap and 2nd hand timber to make stuff, u've done an excellent job! It's said u can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear - BUT, it CAN b done. The amount of waste wood that gets chucked in the bin from a building site is criminal - I chuck nothing out, it all gets used and when beyond use it can always keep me warm. Hats off to u sir, top job.

First of all, the word simplistic in itself, is an adjective. When I graduated from High School over 50 years ago, it was my understanding that an adjective modifies or describes a noun. The word construction can be a noun when used to describe a creation. In using the term "simplistic construction", I was making that very point. I have found a poor mans version of your mini workbench, its made by Sjoberg, they make two, one has a lot of MDF in its makeup so I will take a miss on that one, but the second one is the Sjobergs Smart Workstation Pro and is all beech, its not a patch on yours(no extention) but seems to be the best available, I might even be able to modify and improve on it, I wont know until i get it. Anyway thanks for the idea.

Im in the middle of building a mini portable work bench and now I which I saw your video first. I really like your moxon vice crank. I am welding my own for half the price of buying a kit but yours would be even cheeper with the wood head and toggle. Great job!

Seems like this would be relatively easy to make with regular dimensional wood from the home store. Not sure if it'd be as sturdy but it shouldn't be too expensive. Might actually give this one a go!

@Norbury53 Check with your local cabinet makers. I just got a job at a cabinet maker, we use RIDICULOUSLY good plywood, and we burn our offcuts. I'm DYING looking for things to do with those offcuts. Sooooo, I'm getting one of Andrew Klein's miter fold dado saw blades from Rockler so I can make nice boxes out of this expensive scrap!! :-)

Norbury53 Hey mate, I agree 100% I did shop fitting on and off for eight years all over Australia and even new Zealand. The only time I ever saw ply being used was on expensive commercial pieces or high end retail pieces. Everything else was just shitty old MDF. As a hobbiest wood worker, it made me cry inside not seeing real timber used. That being said though, one of the builders I worked with was close to 70. He’d actually done his apprenticeship in antique furniture restoration back in the 60’s. I saw some pics of some of the things he’d built in his spare time and they were sensational. If I ever won the lotto, I’d hire old Bill for a couple of years to teach me everything he could.

It depends on what you mean by “woodworking”. Matthias’ engineering is superior; Pask’s workmanship is superior. Matthias often engineers things so good workmanship is not required for certain aspects; Pask uses good workmanship everywhere, always. As an engineer, I slightly prefer Matthias’ work, but I also get a lot of benefit from Pask, which is why I’m here. As an aside, this mini workbench is, in fact, exceptionally well engineered.
