Hi Matt, i have been out of town all day. Really sorry i missed class but just finished watching it now. It was great as usual. Yes, the root knob is "loaded," and that variety of shillelagh was used also for fighting. It's not painted black like most are, so it is actually the true color of blackthorn. I believe i shared with you that i returned to using my shillelagh (walking stick), to assist in my daily walking needs, due to my trigger finger issue. The root knob fits in the palm of my hand really well, so i don't have to apply pressure with my fingers, as i do when gripping my cane. I have always been told i am a hard head, so maybe "Doug" is a good name for it. lol! Glad you enjoy it and it was an honor to give it to you. Hope to see you tomorrow. Doug.

Doug - Where did you find those? They are really interesting. Diving into this world has been really interesting. So many cultures with their own weapons and styles. Thanks to Matt, I've made my own Hanbo and am about 5-6 weeks into using it. (Decades ago did some TKD with Hapkido too, so this feels good to get back into something that exercises my brain, body, and has an ulterior purpose - defense.) Was watching some Dutch guys last week (non-weapon, but still interesting street defense focus with some wicked use of shins to kind of front/round kick to side of attacker's knee). Starting to see some instances where the people are getting pretty complicated with all their moves, and except for those who want to spend years training, likely to be confusing when "pressure tested". Those don't get saved to my favorites. Always good to see your input on Matt's broadcasts. Sounds like you know your way around the block on this stuff.

@@scottanthony3426 Hi Scott. Sorry i didn't see your post until now. I purchase the shillelaghs from a family company (Olde Shillelagh). As Matt said, it is in Shillelagh, Ireland. Their Irish sticks are really good quality, there are several types and varieties and customer service is top notch. A suggestion i might make is to be sure and only deal with are reputable company. All their shillelaghs are manufactured in their shop. I hope this helps Scott. Stay safe and God bless. Doug.

Doug is one very impressive and to be sure effective walking stick. I have a lightweight aluminum stick and a old fashioned hook type wooden walking stick. It has a bit more weight to it and it's larger in diameter than the aluminum one. I'm all for what works over being fancy. Don't have the kind of energy I used to have, so quick economic movements that guarantee results is the best course of action. I like your simple but effective approach. It can get you out of an unpleasant situation without being exhausted. Thanks for the valuable lesson. All the best.

Great news! I was looking to purchase a Irish blackthorn walking stick.. and I looked out I found my grandmother's that she used to use .. it was down the basement this one not only has a good size root knob they left the root protruding for a handle/ grip . So like a cane crook you can use it to support yourself if you have a injury.. the piece of root that sticks out from the knob about 6 in also would make a effective defense tool for ripping off flesh... Just like the crook of your defense cane.. even though it has a large diameter shaft. It still is not heavy at all which I can get some good speed going with it thanks for the videos keep them coming...

Ireland: swords forbidden, shillelaghs, South Africa? spears forbidden, carry a knobkerry. Japan, Samurai becomes a monk, no sword, but a staff. World-wide pattern. Blackthorn is a Prunus species used in hedges, I believe the knob on yours is from a stem that was pruned and then put up a new vertical shoot. Your staff is one of those shoots and the knob is the top of the older trunk. In front of the Portland Art Museum my lady and I watched a 5'2" 50-something black man with a bamboo cane change the life of an attacking 6' 4" young street punk (drunk) saying he was "gonna kill you N****!) He had two buddies watching so we kept an eye on them and she was ready to find security in the museum. Wasn't needed, the buddies left their friend unconscious and bleeding on the sidewalk. The little old guy warned him. Sunday afternoon in the park!

1% Biker trick .. heavy padlock and a bandana... String the bandana through the shackle of the padlock.. hold the ends and strike swing it... You can keep the bandana through the shackle and Tuck the lock in your back pocket with the bandana hanging out. If pulled over by the authorities just pull up one end of the bandana pull it out from. The shackle in you have a padlock in your back pocket.. very effective

Hi Matt. I too missed the live version, but caught it right after. I really like these simpler routines that have the direct strike combos that seem to be just the ticket for real world of self defense. I incorporated today's info into my pre-weight train day warm up. (I do the wrist rotations, then some of the spins with the hand passing, then choose a routine or two to practice with my home-made hanbo, or do some free hand things you shown us.) Good to learn about the Irish walking sticks too. I got interested in this whole gray man thing when I stumbled across the cane master's stuff. Call it vanity, but having spent 50 years working out, playing sports, eating (mostly) "right", and some good fortune, a cane feels like it would just be too "out of place" for me to be carrying around on a walk. So, I'm doing a lot of information gathering here, trying to get ideas on what I'd be most likely to carry as an accessory. Right now that is a "walking stick" or "Jo" size implement. I can see possibly putting a leather strap on it and using it on hikes as a walking stick. (the hanbo is too short - you need some extra lenght when going downhill) But the Irish stick looks interesting. Perhaps more "urban" than a hiking stick (which might look like "Crocidile Dundee Comes to NY if walking downtown Seattle. ) My next step is to get a Jo size staff so I can learn to deal with the extra length. (My Hanbo is 36" x 1" diameter oak, courtesy of Home Despot). Just checked Home Despot this week and that 3' is the longest oak dowel they carry. (You can get hemlock in longer). Amazon was out of stock on the 48", although I think I'd like to go closer to 60" for my height. Watched a couple videos from a guy in the UK - something re Aikido Jo Stick and saw an idea your audience might like. He attaches some kind of disc shapes (container lids?) to a 4 x 4 post, and uses that to prefect his thrusting strikes - accuracy and power. I might try to concoct something with PVC pipe (not too heavy - might be fun if it moves a bit eventually) and anchor it into a deck umbrella stand or 25 lb weight plate, and attach some targets at different heights to simulate head, throat, solar plexus/ribs. Again this is just for thrusting type strikes but it lets you work on aim, and proper weight transfer to get smooth power. Hope the summer is treating you and the family well.

A jo and a han bo are equally effective Also if you are used to handling a katana as in batto then there are strikes from kenjutusu that can be used with a jo or han bo Any cane can work if you know where to strike even a more feeble umbrella can be effective and more ressonable to explain to police officers after you open up a can of whoop with an umbrella there are techiques with traditional jo and han bo also with canes and umbrellas. I also include crutches when in case one is injured a crutch can be effective. Any real self defense system teaches you can use anything to extend reach and power.

Shillelaghs are traditionally made of oak that has been repeatedly sanded and oiled. We had an Irish monsignor who came to the Unite States as a missionary. Yes. I have seen them in airports now all over the states. I’ve talked to many who carry them and even when tsa or police know that they are self defense canes, they still have no trouble. Most cops want to let you protect yourself. It’s the liberal district attorneys who get elected by Soros money who are the main issue.

Please teach responsibly...Please dont tell people to do a first strike...the first to strike is the aggressor, escalating, and will go to jail. Also head strikes are deadly force. Teach arms & legs, which are non lethal. If the other person escalates to deadly force, then you can. Anyone not understanding the law will get sent to prison, and you said to hit them in the head with a stick is not going to get them acquitted. Please teach responsibly.

Ugh. We gotta listen to greetings to people coming in late that we don't' know or see, trapped as a captive audience. What if our professors did that every time the door opened and someone came down the auditorium steps? It breaks concentration so it makes the whole lecture hard to follow because we've got to reset cognitive flow of information. Start, stop, info, stop, info, stop, info, stop .... ;) It's your video of course, but it would be even BETTER if information was contiguous.

Nice to have found your channel. I have been a martial artist for 43 years retired now retired now or it would be it be 48 years for me I still train at home and teach friends and their kids on the side not in a dojo. It's nice to watch you move in the mannerisms that I do when I teach Hometown self defense. Keep going you're doing a great job . Cat
