Important things every new software developer should be doing during job interviews. No matter what happens, just remember that getting rejected might not be your fault. There are plenty of bad interviewers out there. Try not to take a rejection personal.

How self-taught software developers get job offers:
Did you spend too much time on leetcode instead of building a portfolio. This is kind of a tricky one to balance. Spending a lot of time on leetcode can definitely help you develop problem solving skills that can help with technical interview questions. But this doesn’t mean you can build applications.

You have very good content. I've been in commercial IT for 35 years and agree with everything you say. Interviews are often so synthetic, and an excuse for willy waving. At no point have I ever been given a ticket and then asked 10 minutes later how I'm getting on with it. People seem to think its like the movies, hacking into NASA etc
@jamescross
@jamescross 2 жыл бұрын
Yup. A lot of tickets easily take more than 10 minutes just to start understanding the nuances of the requirements. Some take even longer. Let alone come up with how you will implement it.

Might have to not rely on college placement if you're more interested in web development. You might have to learn C++ and Python as part of your program but software development is a huge industry so long term, do what you enjoy.

Been interviewing for an Android Engineer Position for a bit over a year now. Countless interviews and it always seems to end the same way, my lack of proficiency in DSA. I refused to believe that a 20 min test on something I don't normally use, was the thing that determines if I qualify for that type of position or not. I've done tons of projects, but still not enough. Getting close to three years since I stared learning Software Development and here's their way of gate keeping smh. But since I don't have a choice, I gotta get better at it. Even if I need to learn another language to get it done. So decided to learn Python for DSA, I'll update this comment in the future 7/20/22
@jamescross
@jamescross Жыл бұрын
that's rough. i'm not super up on the android market. the interview process is kinda broken with the whole test your DSA that you never use mentality. have you completed android projects and uploaded them to the store?

I’ve got a pretty serious question if you could help out. I’m in kind of the same shoes you were before you moved in to software: wife, kids, site job that has me for 12 hours a day (and nights). Because of that I’m learning slow because there’s just not enough time in the day. Is there any guidance you could offer on when you think somebody is ready to start applying? I’m not even close yet but it would be useful to have a benchmark of things I really should know already before I start looking for jobs. Cheers dude

here are the items to learn for frontend development: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJbahaeBnLGZh9U as you get to the point where you are more confident in your ability to figure out what you don't know, start applying. Don't wait until you feel completely ready as that won't happen.

One of the ways I built up experience was during downtime between construction projects I built small marketing websites for the company and then started some ads to drive traffic to those page. They liked the results so I got to spend more and more time doing that stuff. You might see if there is a way to create your own position. just a thought.

Found this video after a bit of an epiphany doing the Cloud Resume Challenge in AWS. One, I struggle at the backend stuff. I mean I got some Lambda functions, and DynamoDB setup for a page counter script in JS but it took me a couple days just to figure how to set it up and get the API to communicate with all the features -- except I didn't use AWS's SAM CLI, it was all done in the AWS web console. However, it made me realize I still love doing front end stuff though with React and Angular being the biggest tools perhaps I could go back. I miss experimenting and designing in HTML and CSS. My JS needs work though. I went into IT because I couldn't do leetcode interviews, thought it was a bit much and you did point out that lots of software companies bought into the cult of personality of leetcoding. (three companies did python challenges, back then I was like "wha?") So I've been debating on a lateral move from IT to FrontEnd Software Development. Not sure if having an IT background transfers well, but I do have a Sec+ and there was lots of materials regarding securing your code for what it's worth. Just the idea of starting over again doesn't sit right with me. At least the FrontEnd salaries are better than most sysadmin jobs.

Well IT to frontend probably carries more weight than my history degree to frontend so... go for it, if it's what you want to do.
