trains always have the right of way, even over emergency vehicles (police, fire, ems, etc...). it takes the average train over a mile to stop. look, listen, and live. don't drive around gates that are lowered with lights flashing. a few seconds being stopped could save your life. don't walk on or near the railroad right of way, objects possibly thrown up by the train can go as far as 50 feet. if you must cross tracks, look both ways. always expect a second train if the crossing has more than one set of tracks.

I almost was run over by a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train near my home, along the main line between Harrisburg and Philadelphia, PA. I was about 11 or 12 years old. I was fishing with some neighborhood buddies in South Harrisburg, PA. On our way home we were walking on the rails (there were 4 sets of tracks). On track #4 (next to the river) was a slow moving freight train. We were walking on track #3 going home after fishing. I was trailing my buddies, and just walking not a worry in the world. I was looking behind me once in a while because I know the passenger trains coming in from Philly run about 75 mph at our location. I was watching the ties making sure I didn't misstep. I looked up and my buddies were all running off the tracks, I instantly looked behind me and all I could see was the engine of a PRR passenger train bearing down on me. His headlight was so bright and moving fast in my direction. I sprinted off the tracks towards tracks #2 and #1, and before I could have taken more than 4 or 5 steps, that passenger train zipped past me with its whistle blowing. I don't recall hearing the whistle before that. Maybe the noise of the slow moving freight train on track #4 next to me (going east while the passenger train was going west) dampened the oncoming train on my #3 track. That happened about 60 years ago (I'm 72 now), and to this day I often think of how lucky I was to have turned around and seen that train approaching me and my buddies. It was a day I'll never forget, and for the sake of the train engineer, I'm so glad I got out of his way.
